No public audits - I don’t trust. Italy is also not exactly a privacy (and personal rights) haven.

Graphine , to showerthoughts in Lemmy is so good right now for no particular reason

Lemmy is janky, but that’s probably a good thing. Keeps the entitled asses away. I’ve only seen one asshole on this entire site in the last month.

feor , to gaming in Should I play Dark Souls original or Remaster?

Definitely the Remaster. I would go for DS1 first. Yes gameplay will feel odd but you‘ll get used to it. It‘s a fantastic introduction to the series and you‘ll see how much Fromsoftware learned and improved since then. Fair warning: DS1 might feel easier for you. DS3 on the other hand is more similar to ER.

I'm curious if the decentralized nature of Lemmy will mean it never gets to be "too big" since users will be more spread out. I know we can all see each other's posts... but still

@AndreTelevise@kbin.social avatar

It's your decision, and I hate Reddit and Spez ever since they decided to do the whole API thing, but personally, if I were to close my account, I wouldn't scramble all of my comments and posts. It makes it harder for people who still search for answers to questions on reddit to find what they're looking for. You aren't preserving valuable information with this, you're destroying it.

Nougat ,
turquoisetide ,

That’s a feature, not a bug.

I scrambled years worth of comments into a statement about the fuckery Reddit has committed and left those edited comments intact while deleting my accounts.

This serves a couple of purposes:

  1. Devalue the platform by destroying information, with the explicit hope that it fucks with Google results and that people will leave if enough people salted the earth on their way out
  2. Informing people of Reddit’s fuckery

wiki software that can kind of talk among each other

What do you feel wikis have to gain from being able to talk to each other?

Are you picturing a situation where 20 people host their own, say, music wikis, and every time you look up an album, you're presented a list of up to 20 hot takes about that album, all independently hosted and federating, rather than those users collaborating on a single communal knowledge source? I feel like removing the "communal knowledge source" aspect defeats the purpose of a wiki; they're supposed to be collaborative by nature.

Or are you picturing a world where I could host a music wiki and you could host a TV wiki, and we could link to each other if we wanted? Because that's already how it works, eh.

Others have covered why they think this isn't appropriate, but I'm curious what you thought we stand to benefit from federated wiki software.

Kierunkowy74 , to nostupidquestions in How to create a decentralized kind of wiki?
@Kierunkowy74@kbin.social avatar

Wikis serve mainly lurkers, and federation of these sites does not matter much for them. The main advantage of wiki federation would be ability to edit several wikis under the same account. However, you can achieve the same effect with OAuth (that is, logging to many sites with the same account on another one).

Infrapink ,
@Infrapink@kbin.social avatar

And even that is unnecessary if the wiki in question allows anonymous editing.

someLinuxDude OP , to linux in Is anyone defending the Rebuilders?

One other thing I want to add: I’ve read a bunch of comments about how the Rebuilds were used in educational and scientific settings, and that there is a prohibitive cost for RHEL in those environments. After reading so many comments about it, I have to believe that Red Hat is going to make some modification to their Developer License program to allow more than 16 ‘seats’ for those use cases.

turdas ,

I don’t have any expectations of them doing this (but I also have no expectations to the contrary), but I think it would be a good move from Red Hat to make the official RHEL more available, as you suggest.

In another thread I compared the RHEL rebuilds to piracy, and in that vein one could quote Gabe Newell and say that piracy is a service problem – part of the reason Alma/Rocky/etc. exist is because there is a group of users who want to use RHEL but cannot afford it. Red Hat seems to believe that these users should be satisfied with CentOS Stream, and maybe most of them would be, if they only gave it a try. But making RHEL more widely accessible, both to paying users and developers, would probably be good too.

robotrash , to lemmyshitpost in Bye Reddit. So long and thanks for all the fish.

I really wish people wouldn’t do this. This does nothing to Reddit and only hurts people trying to get answers when searching.

Micromot ,

That’s exactly the point, they’re making the content on reddit useless so it’s not appealing to investors or anyone at all.

pwnstar ,

Micromot ,

pwnstar ,

slipperydippery , to nostupidquestions in Anyone else having this issue?

Do you have "hide viewed posts" checked? I don't think that is the exact wording, but it will hide posts that you have opened, commented on, voted on, and also the posts you have created.

The feature is a bit hardcore

Scew OP ,
@Scew@lemmy.world avatar

AHA! That's it but I see why I had it set the way I did. At least in the interface I'm using I read it the way you suggested as "hide viewed posts" so I unchecked it but it's actually "show read posts." Basically opposite functionality from when I had glanced at it and thought I understood. Thank you!

zedricxks OP , to selfhosted in rss feeds with tailscale
@zedricxks@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

for anyone looking for the answer. I was able to get it working see below: I was able to get tailscale working after reading many comments it all started to click in my mind and I realized it needed a full url say blabla.local/api… so i was able to adguard home add a dns entry for blabla.local using my tailscale device ip. Reverse proxy on the device aiming the tailscale ip to blabla with the port. Then i found a comment in github comments of old issues the dev mentioned in the data folder of the config files you can change the ip that the api listens so i just changed from local ip to tailscale ip refreshed and it all worked. With no issue to my home browser but api working with tailscale on mobile.

turkelton ,

damn, that seems awfully complicated just to connect to your RSS reader hahah

Minifluff , to gaming in Is it me or are games really not fun anymore

I started avoiding games that make it hard to play without choosing the meta. I look for indie games where solving mysteries about the game made it more interesting. Its not for everyone but it could be a breath of fresh air for anyone looking to get away from games that expect you to play a specific way or to grind for new stuff.
