Depends on your use case. Since Beehaw has no open registration, but approves new users, that makes a difference.
[…] our reason for defederating, by and large, boils down to:
these two instances’ open registration policy, which is extremely problematic for us given how federation works and how trivial it makes trolling, harassment, and other undesirable behavior;
the disproportionate number of moderator actions we take against users of these two instances, and the general amount of time we have to dedicate to bad actors on those two instances;
[…]
If you want a moderated registration process, and people can join you through the backdoor, leaving that door open is like sticking a stick in your bike spokes.
Or just ignore them and let become less popular and soon enough the important communities will move away or be replaced. I really dislike how many influence communities are in such a one dimensional instance, luckily I have already seen a few of those moving over to .world or elsewhere and I can’t wait!
I like to have people with all sorts of backgrounds and opinions in my instance, not just everyone with the same black and white viewpoint!
Yeah, it’s a hard balance to follow. Of course you want full, natural diversity of people and opinions in a group. But hateful right wing toxicity is also way overrepresented online, and has to be moderated against if you don’t want a niche online platform to turn into 4chan or whatever
There’s no dartboard in your photo? Needs context, and why is it office bright and painted in a pub? The infuriation from this post gets sweeter and sweeter.
One of them’s upside down. That on its own is enough to make them mildly infuriating. The distance from the dartboard wasn’t a concern as the sockets were just below the ceiling, and the dartboard was dartboard-height. I wouldn’t say the environment’s particularly bright - UK sockets are typically brilliant white, and the PVC conduit is also very white, but they’re both a long way from overexposed in the photo.
and it's getting even worse. My bet is they will forbid all mobile browser connections with a giant fucking modal plastered with "USE THE MOBILE APP" and unable to even use mobile browsers. Enshittification and such
Across the fediverse if you stick an @ in front of the 196 it'll work. Lemmy has a thing where they do an ! instead, but that's specifically their thing.
It was also supposed to only apply if you explicitly went to the subreddit. If you just saw a post in your feed you didn't have to make a post yourself.
But the rule makes the community very very active in a place where there's otherwise not much activity.
/r/196 was a popular sub on Reddit, about 500k subscribers. A lot of them were dedicated users who were very active and had recognizable usernames.
196 was one of the first major subs to shut down and point everyone to the fediverse. It helps that 196 was very LGBTQ-friendly and Blahaj.zone is also very explicitly LGBTQ-friendly, so it was a good match.
196 creates a lot of content because their "rule" was anytime you visited the sub you had to leave an image, whether it was a repost or not. This also works very well for a nascent fediverse where not a lot of OC is being made yet.
Thus 196 was pretty much in the perfect position to become one of the biggest places on the fediverse.
I think they're still down? Not sure, can't check any more. They were my favorite subreddit, so I've been submitting a few posts to the community here also.
Another thing to look for is whether your community name is already taken, on your instance. (You can use the same name on different instances, but only once per instance. Same with usernames.) Sometimes Lemmy just gives you the spinning wheel of death when something is wrong, but doesn’t tell you what the problem is.
I use DuckDNS. There’s been only one outage for the ~2 years I’ve been using it and it’s free. I also use DuckDNS to acquire the SSL certificates for the reverse proxy.
Not exactly the same thing but… People are already referring to Lemmy users as “Lemmings” which, yeah it makes sense… But it also has some stereotypes associated with it that aren’t what I’d like to be associated with, you know?
I can already imagine it being used in a phrase with something about jumping off cliffs and being brainless followers and whatnot. Especially with this exodus situation. lol
There actually was some talk about calling each community “c/liffs.” Likely won’t stick, but, i get where you’re coming from. I think Lemmings in this context feels harmless enough, for me atleast. Anything is better at this point than referring to yourself as a “Redditor”
I personally like Lemmonites for Lemmy, but I think I'm alone there. Fedditors is starting to catch on and is more inclusive of the fediverse as a whole but I kinda don't like fedditor because it defines us by what we left behind. It's probably the best choice we have out there right now though.
The Lemmings suicide thing is actually a myth, made up for views by some documentary crew who forced Lemmings off a cliff. I looked the source up a while ago and that is what I found as information. I hope we can restore their reputation so I keep telling people.
Maybe Tetris? Such a simple concept, and it’s one of the most popular games of all time.
Minecraft for similar reasons. Even if it has become more complex in recent years, the core of it is just…you can break everything and build anything. It’s hard to say that isn’t a perfect sandbox.
More personal opinion though, maybe Super Mario Odyssey. Just incredibly polished and varied with an amazing movement system.
Tetris is an interesting one because you’ve got 3+ decades of variations on the original, but the original is still the best. I’d argue it’s a perfect game.
I personally disagree that the original is best. It’s high up there, but I think some of the later titles have improvements that eek out the #1 spot.
I’m a fan of the “piece swap” feature, and later games have polished the piece lock over the original. Tetris 99 was the sweet spot for games that I’ve played.
