Kerploppus , to fediverse in PSA: Mastodon is NOT Twitter and does not aim to be.

I dunno, this is mighty rose tinted. I've run into some spectacular assholes on Mastodon, worse than on twitter, in fact. Most of whom are those aforementioned communists, being just as grating and insane as the nazis are over on twitter.

ngz , to showerthoughts in Lemmy is so good right now because there are no kids here

I haven’t been here much since I joined last week, but one thing I noticed is I’ve barely seen any typos on Lemmy. While I definitely don’t mind seeing the occasional typo, the number of spelling mistakes was getting annoying, and it’s gotten progressively worse over the last year or so.

Demigod787 ,

How do you even make any typos with all the autocorrect nowadays is beyond me.

StarManta ,

Autocorrect is the cause of many of my typos

DarkDarkHouse ,
@DarkDarkHouse@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Autocorrect catches all my typos, and for that I’m eternally grapefruit

If I was the the maga or republicans right now I would fund as many leftist third parties as possible as the best way to secure a trump victory

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

And they will.

The problem is they don't have to lie about how bad Democrats have been for the people. (Not that Republicans would be any better, mind you.)

Most Americans have seen their cost of living jump 30%-50% under Joe Biden, and Biden's response is to send $100 billion overseas to fight another country's war, not to give a dime of aid to people here who actually need it.

Eatspancakes84 ,

Are you seriously claiming that Ukrainians do not need help? Try losing your kid to a bomb on a pizza restaurant. Wonder how the real estate market in Mariupol is.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

So does Yemen, but you know what has the US been doing? Helping Saudi Arabia starve and decimate the country for the last eight years.

And your fellow Americans are being neglected in order to fund all of this. I'm not sure why it's such a radical notion that maybe, just maybe that hundred billion should be used to benefit our own people instead of funding yet another war.

T0rrent01 ,

There's a remarkable level of racism in the level of concern for Ukraine vs. somewhere with less white and European people like Yemen.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

The war in Ukraine is definitely easier to market, and I think that's why.

T0rrent01 ,

And it infuriates me how war - people getting killed and cultural heritage being destroyed - is so capitalized like that.

Pretty sure it was the same deal with Vietnam back in the day, actually.

Kierunkowy74 , to fediverse in What Mastodon server are you on?

I have 4 Mastodon accounts, 1 on Vivaldi (as I use this browser), and 3 on Polish servers. My main one is on 101010.pl (largest Polish, can read formatted posts), other ones are on pol.social and mastodon.com.pl. I was also on calckey.pl, but Calckey appararently was not ready for use - the instance is now closing down. I have a Polish /kbin account (on karab.in), and WriteFreely and Mobilizon accounts.

Kerploppus , to nostupidquestions in What's with all the NordVPN hate?

Well, my experience was that their shit didn't work very well. Lots of DNS leaking despite correct setup, and customer service just shrugged it off. It did work right for a while under linux using the system's network manager to connect to their servers directly, but over time they made it harder and harder to find their sever list by burying it deeper and deeper on their website.

Ultimately, I couldn't use it under windows without using their client, which constantly disconnected itself and left me unprotected. It would just shut itself off. Then they went ahead and helped themselves to my money way ahead of schedule for a renewal I didn't want, and I had to threaten them with a fraud report for several days before they caved and gave my money back.

I wasn't happy with them selling me shit that barely worked and then stealing my money so I'd just stay instead of fighting them for a refund. Reason enough for anyone to avoid them.

ilex OP ,
@ilex@lemmy.world avatar

At the moment, R***** and their API are popular words on Lemmy. If I were tired of reading those two words, we have the technology to have them omitted or censored on our individual screens.

That other people have APIs doesn't matter. There's presently a business who's API is annoying news. The guy would rather block too much rather than not enough.

heliumlake , to nostupidquestions in What's with all the NordVPN hate?
@heliumlake@lemmy.world avatar

Most VPN services are a sham. They just hide your network activity from your ISP, however they have full visibility in to your network traffic. Some of these VPN providers are even owned by ad agencies, but advertise privacy as a selling point. You’re better off running your own WireGuard or OpenVPN server at home or with a VPS. At least you will have control over the server and limit your exposure to unscrupulous VPN companies. (Yes using a VPS is shifting the trust from one to the other, but you will have to make a decision that is right for you.)

Thorry84 , to showerthoughts in *****'s API change talk feels similar to the Y2K scare.

I made so much money in the 90s working on Y2K stuff. I don’t know how bad it would have been if we didn’t, but people like me fixed a lot of shit in the late 90s to make sure things went smoothly.

Timwi ,
@Timwi@kbin.social avatar

You are one of our unsung heroes.

Thorry84 ,

Thank you, it was mostly very boring work.

About 50% of the job was reading and understanding source code and checking nothing went wrong with Y2K. We needed 100% coverage, with different steps like manually reading (two or even three eye principle), manual testing and writing small little test scenarios and scripts that could be gone through multiple times to check everything. Even when you had to check 5000 lines of code that did nothing with dates, it still needed to be check thoroughly by multiple people, tested, documented etc.

I thought it was insane to put so much effort into code that would work just fine after 2000. But my manager said the customer doesn’t pay to fix the software, the customer pays for the check, for the signature as he put it. That made it still boring, but at least I could understand it better.

There was al lot of FUD around Y2K, a lot of companies could just have hired some programmer to get familiar with the code in December and put in some fixes as they occurred in January. But with all the media attention and buzz going around about THE Y2K bug, customers were getting anxious. They were told it would be pandemonium in January and getting hold of any kind of software developer would be impossible. The costs would be through the roof and companies would fold if they didn’t fix their shit.

My first Y2K project was in 1997 and we had a team of 15+ people, with only 3 actual software engineers like me. The rest was legal staff, project management, administrative staff etc. With some projects there was actual hardware or firmware involved, but most stuff was pure software. Rates for Y2K projects were also huge, it was like some unwritten untold rule of software at that time, all Y2K projects get double the staff, double the price and double the time.

I’ve even worked on a project where we were the second team, a backup team if you will. Another company had done the work before us, but the customer wanted to make double sure, so they hired us to re-do the entire project. We only found out later this was the case, they told us nothing not to influence us. That seemed like a crazy waste of money for me, but in those days it was somehow possible.

Basically an Asus Zenfone 9 with a removable battery and an Sd card. Also, make the front like Sony phones - larger bezels on the top and the bottom of the display and house stereo speakers and front camera there instead of a cutout.
