@DarraignTheSane@lemmy.world avatar

I feel like this post is basically saying "our hammer isn't a hammer because we put a really nice grip on it and it's being wielded by a very nice person". At the end of the day, it still drives a nail.

Just because there's a cultural difference doesn't mean it isn't the same type of social media tool. Simply call it a better form of Twitter and be done with it.

kimagure ,

Yeah, in the end to move you need your interest (or topic or interesting person you want to follow) to exist in Mastodon. For most people, the topic (or interesting people they want to follow) only exist in Twitter, so there's no incentive for them to move from Twitter.

TheMauveAvenger ,

Yep. And the claim that there are not celebrities, or that if there are they are only popular because they're sharing their interests, is comical. Whenever I pull up the main popular feed it's the same slew of people that would have been copied to reddit on PoliticalHumor (Qasim Rashid, George Takei, etc.) sharing snarky political takes fiending for views.

I don't even necessarily disagree with them most of the time, but it's clearly the same type of celebrity engagement that Twitter has.

That will depend on usage. If you subscribe to a lot of communities that are very active the database will grow fairly fast. If your users post a ton of large files then that will grow much much faster than the database. Your instance also caches image thumbnails so that can grow somewhat fast too.

Currently sitting at 750 MB for pictrs and 500MB for postgres after a week, so you may want to plan a decent size but 30-40GB should be fine for a while to get started. Add some monitoring for when it reaches 10, 20 and 30GB and keep an eye on it.

Baku ,

Heya, sorry for the necropost, but would you mind sharing how you’re doing on storage these days? I’m looking at spinning up a Lemmy instance of my own and I’m curious about the storage aspect on small instances

25G     pictrs
13G     postgres

Seems fairly reasonable to me

Thanks!

I think it’s more just because we’re early adopters and the first wave of refugees.

We’re building something here - and right now, for some it’s a new home, for some of us this is something big - a place that resists monetization. This isn’t just the fresh new version of social media, built by cool people who have the best intentions and a vision (I think most of them did, at least initially)

Admins go bad, already some of the instances I’m on have people starting to look at not just paying for servers, but making a profit. And if they can live off the donations - fine, more power to them.

But when someone comes knocking with a bag of money, what are they going to do? They can sell us out, but they can’t go far before we leave… What do we miss out on? The content will either follow or we’re missing out on content elsewhere.

And we can mitigate it further - too many talented people care too much to let this idea die. We’re going to face difficult times, but it’s a new ephemeral Internet built on top of the one stolen from us - it doesn’t start or end with a reddit clone.

And I think that’s why we care - because this time is different. It can’t go bad the way everything else does. It relies on no one, and it’s built from all of us

This place is ours. No kings, no masters, no capitol, no capital

StringPotatoTheory , to gaming in Steam Summer Sale: Hidden Gem/ Recommendations thread

Super Blood Hockey. 80% off, about $3 USD.

It's a very well made pixel art game where you play hockey and you can beat up the other team. There's a franchise mode as well, so you'll want to balance how much fighting you do so your players don't get too hurt. There's local co-op so you can play against friends (or use steam remote play together).

PlateUp!. 40% off, about $11 USD.

Similar to Overcooked but you need to manage your restaurant and make sure you don't fail a single order. It's a rouge-lite, and you can move everything around in your restaurant and you kind of manage the menu as the days go on, but you get a choice whether to add option A or B, so it slowly gets more complicated. Very fun with friends, steam remote play together works here as well.

Bone's Cafe. 30% off, about $11 USD.

Similar to Overcooked and PlateUp!, but I feel like it's more geared towards single player (but there's local co-op as well). You have to manage your restaurant and menu (can make it as easy or complex as you'd like), while also maybe killing customers to harvest them for ingredients :) You can spawn in helpers and you can show them a repetitive task to do and they will do it.

Even as somebody who has never used, and will likely never need Apollo, I am really grateful for what he did. However unintentionally, I think he ripped the mask off how rotten the management structure was. It’s one thing to sell ads and collect hidden metadata. Pretty much all the apps do it. But the whole way Reddit treated him was beyond despicable.

wide_eyed_stupid ,
@wide_eyed_stupid@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed. When I saw the Apollo thread, my first thought was ‘Nah, not even spez would do this’ but I choked on that very fast when I saw the e-mails, the audio recordings and everything. It was so blatant, so asinine, so horribly fucked up.

I’ve never used the Apollo app, but millions of people did and in stead of thanking him for all his work, reddit just stabbed him in the back. Can’t believe there are people still taking reddit’s side on this, it’s crazy.

HexesofVexes , to linux_gaming in Baldur's Gate 3?

The 3rd is very different in character than the original 2. It has more in common with Divinity: Original Sin (1&2) than the original games, so they’re the best ones to check out compatibility wise.

I played it using Lutris. I think I had to use winetricks to install .net and after that it ran flawlessly. Do a search on the net. I think the same can be done for Steam using Protontricks. It is such a cool game and if BG3 is anything like it, I am stoked.

If you want to unleash the full potential of an all-flash config and be futureproof, better get one that comes with full width M.2, i.e. x4 with at least PCIe gen 4 connectivity. That only leaves you x86 unless you want something really exotic.

Met our new neighbours yesterday and we’re very happy to discover that they seem cool and also are quite young, which is a rarity in these parts. Trying not to get my hopes up about potentially making new friends, but hey you never know.

Of course since they’ve just moved in, they’ve already warned us there’ll be a fair amount of DIY noise (no problem with that, moving house is lots of work and they don’t do it too early or late) and I suspect that will ramp up at the weekend so we’re planning a trip out somewhere quiet with a picnic instead of just loafing indoors like we usually do.

Less socially awkward lemmings and kbinauts of UKCasual, tell me, is it weird to maybe invite new neighbours round for a cup of tea or something and get to know them a bit? Is that friendly or creepy? I honestly can’t tell.

HiDefMusic ,

It’s not creepy or anything, but personally I’d prefer a more relaxed vibe like a bbq or a couple of evening drinks. Just make sure the invite is super casual, like “hey it’d be great to get to know you guys over a tea or coffee whenever you’ve settled” and then invite them again in 2-3 weeks or something.

TeaHands ,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

My thought was that I didn’t want to just assume they drink, and also a bbq seems way more effort and therefore more pressure, but yeah I think you’re right about framing it as a “when you’re settled” thing, thanks.

I’m just overexcited cos I’ve lived here for ten years and managed to get to know like one person in the entire town outside of my partner’s family 😅

Mane25 ,

I can’t think of an occasion where it would be socially wrong to invite someone round for a cup of tea - but don’t ask me since I’m not not socially awkward.

rubikfrog ,
@rubikfrog@feddit.uk avatar

My old neighbour tells me that the person who moved into our previous house has been known to chase neighbours down the street to insist they come in for a cup of tea. So I think there is a line here where it can become socially awkward.

Since mankind mostly decoupled from natural evolution, we wouldn't develop other mouths. But our look would still change because the jaw muscles wouldn't be trained and maybe our facial expression could become very underdeveloped.
