Loved it. Star Trek has always been handwavy with legal rules in favour of a compelling debate and this was no exception.

As a Canadian, I instantly started thinking about the metaphor in terms of laws the Canadian government had against indigenous people practicing or teaching their cultural practices.

On the other hand, as a gay man, I was thinking about when homosexuality was considered a criminal practice and how sometimes gay men will stay in the closet to avoid discrimination.

One of the things that’s most interesting to me is how many minorities groups Una’s experience maps to in some rhyming way.

I’ve heard a number of people interpret it about themselves, which is really good, the allegory was understandable while still being a cohesive story.

I thought trans people were a good fit for the metaphor, given the body alterations that can be involved.

match , to asklemmy in I need to survive for 3 days without pooping, and eating as little as possible. I can pee, but not very often. It can't take up too much space. What food do I pack?
@match@pawb.social avatar

enjoy your sex trip and I wish you happy bottoming! if you’re not going to be doing too much physical labor during this time I recommend going full bottom mode: the week ahead of it start eating very lightly, initially a high fiber diet with added psyllium husk or metamucil. your body might be different but mine would say no dairy during this time. for the day before or even two, switch to a meatless and somewhat low fiber diet - ramen noodles is a classic, cookies, soup, other carbs. before you leave for the trip, clean out with an enema bulb (or store bought enemas if your ass is bougie or inexperienced). the combination of low fiber and low food throughput should keep you from having to poop and whatever poop is still in your tract will get largely removed by the enema.

while you’re out at your fuck-tent, consume most of your calories from simple carbs as much as your body will handle so as to give your microbiome less to work with - applesauce is kinda nice, fruit snacks, white bread. eat like a twink!

remember to stay hydrated!! I know you’re not trying to pee either but it’s important to hydrate even if it means suffering whatever penalty your dom is giving you when you ask to be let out to pee

grahamj ,
@grahamj@lemmy.ca avatar

I really like this Spock, don’t get me wrong, but I’m finding his increasing “humanness” a bit distracting. I mean, making a joke in court? That was a bit far-fetched.

StillPaisleyCat ,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

I took as needling the Vulcan Jag…which he couldn’t resist. The set-up was his uncontrolled outburst in the Enterprise mess.

CNash85 ,

One of the problems that this show has to grapple with is that we already know Spock very well from Leonard Nimoy's portrayal. I'd go so far as to say that - notwithstanding a few gaps - every major event of his life is known to the audience, and we are very familiar with how he's "meant to be".

What then is an actor to bring to such a part? Ethan Peck can't just replicate Nimoy's performance - for one thing, it would be boring. The writers take advantage of this series being a prequel to do the only thing they can: show how Spock became the Spock that we know from TOS. They use his appearance in the TOS pilot "The Cage", where he was visibly more emotional and "human", as a touchstone, and make his journey towards emotional control and "Vulcan-ness" part of his character arc for this show.

I went into it a little in another post, but I think Spock's manner is more familiar and "one of the guys" because he's allowed himself to become emotionally attached to the rest of the crew, and that bleeds into his personality, making him more liable to use humour and jokes to relieve tension. A few years later, when Kirk takes command and many of these officers have moved on, he decides that he will be more emotionally guarded, letting his guard down only with Uhura and Chapel - and only in brief, relaxed moments.

maplealmond ,

While it was played as a joke, the whole “was she hiding something” had me on first watch going “but everyone is hiding something, surely”

Spock was highlighting this with his trademark precision.

mrh , to piracy in Is a VPN necessary for torrenting?
@mrh@mander.xyz avatar

Alternatively if price is an issue (NEVER use a “free” VPN) you could torrent over I2P, which is free and very safe (at least as safe as tor, if not moreso).

Also the next release of qbittorrent is about to have built in I2P support (but also standard I2P comes with its own torrenting software).

Floridian here. Anything below 20°F sounds like penguins, and there is no discernable difference between temperatures (eg 15°F ≈ -42°F/C = 🐧🐧).

Pirky ,
@Pirky@lemmy.world avatar

Idk if I can do a good job, but for me, 10-20 degrees is average winter temp. Nothing to be concerned about: just my winter coat and thin gloves.

0-10 degrees is starting to get cool. If I’m outside for a prolonged period of time I’ll add a hat and switch to my thicker gloves.

-10-0 degrees is cold. That’s the period where breathing through your nose gets crispy and deep breaths make you cough. I always have a hat and good gloves at this range. If I need to be outside for a while, I use flannel lined jeans. I also make sure to use my actual winter boots.

-20 to -10 degrees is rare, but does happen. You really shouldn’t be outside at those temps, but I’ve done it anyway. Any breeze at that temperature is dangerous. A facemask of some kind is strongly recommended if you need to be out for any length of time.

Coldest I’ve personally experienced was -25 degrees. That was winter 2013-14. There’s nothing quite like experiencing that level of cold. I left a university building to go to my jeep with a bottle of powerade in my backpack. When I got to my jeep it had turned into a slushie.
All these temps are absolute by the way; not windchill.

Peter Dinklage?

jasparagus , to askscience in How is the moon tidally locked?

Here’s a good explainer:

What is tidal locking? phys.org/news/2015-11-tidal.html

Basically, the moon acted like a spinning (unbalanced) wheel, and eventually stopped with the “heavy” side pointing “down” towards Earth. I.e. think of the moon as orbiting Earth with the heavy side staying pointed at Earth.

dystop , to youshouldknow in YSK that 1M users on lemmy from the-federation.info is bullshit
@dystop@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not bullshit, it’s because of two reasons:

First, “Active last month” refers to users who have posted a comment in the last month. Every site like this has a large number of lurkers. A good rule of thumb is 10% of subscribers/users actually post/comment/participate. So 350-400k “legitimate” users sounds like the right ballpark.

Second, the numbers are so high because there has been a known bot attack. A few instances didn’t have email verification/captchas enabled so it was very easy to sign up for accounts very quickly. Some instances went from 500-800 users, to 10,000 users overnight.

arcrust ,

It’s also probably inflated due to people making multiple accounts. I’m sure there’s lots of us (myself included) who made an account on one instance and then decided to swap to a different one.

withersailor , to showerthoughts in Winter is perhaps the only time you can successfully invade Russia. Hitler and Napoleon invaded in the summer and failed. The Mongols invaded in the winter and won.

How’d that work out for Napoleon and Hitler, just to name a couple.

But can’t be arsed working out which started in winter vs which where destroyed by winter.

nottheengineer , to askscience in How is the moon tidally locked?
Hypersapien OP ,

So why doesn’t the moon rotate around the axis that’s on the line that points from the Earth to the moon? The “Z” axis as we look into the sky?

Or does it?

nottheengineer ,

Try recreating that spin with a fidget spinner and slowly turn it around like the moon turns to face earth. You’ll find that it wants to turn in a way where it spins around the same axis it’s orbiting.

Since the moon has no hand preventing it from doing that, it aligns its spin with the orbit, so the forces described in the article bring that rotation to a halt.

j4k3 , to askscience in How is the moon tidally locked?
@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar

To really blow your mind, the Moon is slowly moving away, but will never escape. Eventually both the Earth and the Moon will become tidally locked to each other at which point the Moon will no longer move further away. This assumes no outside influences and enough time.
