dragontamer , to fediverse in Can we organize AMAs to help Lemmy/Kbin grow?

This is far too premature.

AMA is a high amount of trust in the moderation team. You build trust by having assurances that the AMA hosts have done their research and prove that the person is who they say they are.

Where we need to start is: who around here is even capable of hosting AMAs? Are they willing to host AMAs to build a community/subreddit’s trust? Etc. etc.

socialjusticewizard ,

Build trust by having AMAs of interesting non-celebrity people.

It’s essentially a community that promotes left wing extremist ideologies and is very much in favour of authoritarians who don’t like democracy. Lots of hate for the west, lots of whataboutisms and lots of love for Putin and Xi and lots of excuses for the invasion of Ukraine and the Uyghur genocide. I’m left leaning but they have more in common with fascists than anything else.

silent_clash , to piracy in Any TTRPG focused public tracker?

If they’re that indie, consider paying for it because they need support to exist. Sorry I don’t have a real answer.

LoreleiSankTheShip OP ,

In the end, that’s what I ended up doing. Thanks anyway!

phoenixdigita1 , to RedditMigration in I'd like to encourage people on the fediverse to comment/upvote/post more than when reddit

I'd like to point out that the upvote/downvote buttons here on kbin don't behave like you are used to on reddit they are a little different.

  • Up arrow = Upvote on Reddit and Favourite on Kbin - This is very different to reddit
  • Down Arrow = Downvote on Reddit and Reduce on Kbin
  • Boost (at bottom) = On kbin this is the equivalent to a reddit upvote.

It kinda confused me when I looked at my profile the other day and my reputation was -2

I'd only made one single post and it had 17 "upvotes" and 2 "downvotes" so the -2 confused me a bit. That's when I realised the uparrow was not an upvote and didn't contribute to reputation. I suspect many others don't understand this either based on the interractions with my other post.

Edit: To be clear while "fake internet points" are not overly important to me. "Reputation" or similar do give me an indication if I am contributing to a community in a positive and productive manner.

Seeing -2 made me think "Who have I pissed off?" Till I realised that "Favourites" don't contribute to reputation.

Wander , to asklemmy in Whaf do you think of hosting an AMA with John Oliver to make Lemmy/kbin officially a viable Reddit replacement?
@Wander@yiffit.net avatar

I’d be more inclined to reach out to Louis Rossmann, especially since he’s said he won’t post on reddit anymore. Maybe we can even find a home on lemmy for his right to repair campaign.

dragnucs ,

Him too is a good candidate for an AMA.

nieceandtows OP ,

He’s a good candidate too, but to me, John Oliver has come to be associated with Reddit revolts in the media, because he was flooding the front page for a while. Even major news outlets wrote about it. If he does an ama here, it would symbolically show that those people have moved on to Lemmy.

Why not both?

ramblingsteve , to retrogaming in Does anyone remember the Neo-Geo?
@ramblingsteve@lemmy.world avatar

I remember them from magazines in the 90's but they were totally urban legend. Never seen one in real life but it's been good to experience them emulated. Wind jammers, metal slug, king of fighters, last blade, so many classics. It's a shame it never went mainstream.

I think it’s generally good policy to run ACs every month or so.

blueskiesoc OP ,
@blueskiesoc@lemmy.world avatar

Why? What purpose does this serve? This is a real question, not a snarky comment. What do I not know?

dan1101 ,
@dan1101@lemmy.world avatar

Most machinery lasts longer when you run it every month or so at least. For an AC unit there is lubricant in the refrigerant, so circulating the refrigerant once in a while keeps the seals in good condition. It would also keep the moving parts of things like fans from corroding and seizing up.

For vehicles, running the them occasionally circulates the fluids like oil and antifreeze. The oil keeps the moving parts of the engine coated and doesn’t allow things like condensation to rust the internal parts.

Spacecraft ,

Same reason why if you have part time 4WD in a vehicle you should put upwards of 10 miles per month with 4WD engaged (just try to keep it to straight roads). Check your owners manual first, but every 4WD vehicle I’ve owned has recommended it.

Fosheze ,

This is definitely good advice for vehicle AC because like you said, it keeps the compressor seals in good shape. However it isn’t as important for residential AC systems because they use fully hermitic compressors. There is no shaft seal that can fail. Depending on your outdoor temps, running your home AC in the winter can actually be very bad for it.

When it’s cold outside liquid refrigerant will tend to settle in the compressor crank case that means when that compressor starts up it will immediately suck in and try to compress that incompressable liquid refrigerant. Depending on the compressor type this will drastically reduce it’s lifespan or just straight up kill it. On systems designed to be used in cold weather there will be a crank case heater on the compressor to boil off any liquid refrigerant in the crank case. But if your system wasn’t built with cold weather running in mind then it won’t have one of those.

dan1101 ,
@dan1101@lemmy.world avatar

Today I Learned, don’t run a house AC when it’s cold.

00 , to technology in What browser extensions do you use?
@00@kbin.social avatar

Looking at the comments, interest in privacy and adblocking seem high. But the actual addons suggested here are often redundant or even worse, make you easier to track. Instead, take a look at the Arkenfox wiki, which is more or less the gold standard for browser privacy. Both LibreWolf and Mullvad Browser, practically the most privacy/anonymity oriented browsers out there, right behind Tor, either rely on it or stick very closely to it.
I highly recommend reading the entire wiki from the start. You dont have to do everything it says, obviously, but even if you dont do anything it will give you a better understanding of browser privacy. And lastly, do not use Chrome or any chromium based browser if you care about privacy and a free and open internet. Even if you only use a chromium based browser, you help increase googles monopoly.

nevernevermore , to asklemmy in Whaf do you think of hosting an AMA with John Oliver to make Lemmy/kbin officially a viable Reddit replacement?

Let's start small. Can we do a Christian Selig AMA first? I think that would be a decent flagship that might draw the attention of the press. That way we have something proven before we start getting in people who have PR teams...
