How much time do I have to prepare for the fight?

jbrains , to nostupidquestions in if you ever traveled 1K miles by bus, would you recommend it?

I’ve never done this and would never do it, for all the reasons people have already described.

I would, however, choose a 6-hour train over a 2-hour flight, as long as I traveled in (European) first/business class with a seat reservation.

There is almost no amount of money that could convince me to travel 36 hours by bus if I could instead spend 5-6 hours going through airports and only one flight. If I literally didn’t have the money to fly, I would spend all my energy figuring out how not to go at all.

These days all those closed containers are virus spreaders so better to fly and get less exposure time. Wear an N95 either way.

In the old days I did some long bus and train trips and it wasn’t so bad unless there were noisy or otherwise annoying people on board. Basically bring a long book to read, sleep when you can, and enjoy the scenery when there is something to look at. A travel pillow can be a help, and also warm clothes or a blanket. On international trains (EU) you can meet interesting people too.

On the plus side, if we evolved on Planet Sunblaster then our hearing would have evolved to either dial down the volume or filter it out completely.

mub , to asklemmy in What books do you consider must reads?

It is always hard to pick just one, but I usually pick either one of the culture novels, or Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder.

grue , to asklemmy in Parent to Moderate YouTube

This situation you describe is legitimately one of my greatest fears as a parent. I have little useful advice to give; all I can really say is “good luck” and to research terms like “elsagate,” “gamergate” and “PewDiePipeline” to see what advice actual experts (psychologists etc.) have about deprogramming kids from them.

I was raised allowed to moderate my own content because I was trusted to be intelligent and wise enough to critically select what I watched or read and learn from the mistakes I made if I consumed something negatively influential.

I was raised allowed to moderate my own content because my computer-illiterate parents had absolutely no clue what the Internet was capable of exposing me to. Frankly, it was only dumb luck on their part that I happened to have the right personality and skills not to succumb to inceldom, the Alt-Right, or some other kind of radicalization.

(Even more frankly, maybe I did succumb to radicalization: I am, after all, an urbanist leftist Linux user (among other weird things) who likes to hang out on Lemmy, LOL!)

I’m pretty sure a doctor did this to me when I dislocated my shoulder (or at least something similar). It very much hurt in the moment, but right afterwards the pain disappeared, it was truly a strange experience

lordnikon , to startrek in Worst examples of Treknobabble

technobbabble is only bad when it solves the point of the story the only one that was bad about that in classic trek was voyager. In nutrek technobbable is the least of it’s worries and that comes from a disdain and lack of respect for the audience. At best it is Star Wars with Star Trek Redskin Mod installed.

At worst incoherent and telling the same story and yes one story over one season every season. We found a MacGuffin now let’s go on hunt. look at JJs sequel Trilogy and Star Wars and discovery season 1, 2,3 of discovery it’s all the same. i think Ronald D Moore once said the amazing part about Star Trek was you could tell and genre of story in Star Trek.

Im not just talk episodic versus Cereal cuz look at DS9 you had a war story and right in the middle of it you had a love story with Kira and Odo and a heist movie. Im very sad that doesn’t happen anymore.
