I’m back into my childhood reading the latest book in the eragon universe, Murtagh. It’s going well but I’m playing a bit too much video games to read. I have a nice edition with printed edges from my mom but I really want to get back to reading on my kindle.

nutomic , to fediverse in Instance admins, how much does it cost you to run your instance? How much does that represent per active user?
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

I pay around 80€ per month for the lemmy.ml server, plus a few euros for image hosting and domain. So that’s around 3 cents per active user.

Blaze OP ,
@Blaze@feddit.org avatar

Thank you!

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

that’s quite low. There must be a lot of barely active users

matcha_addict ,

Why is it low? Lemmy scales very well and isn’t resource intensive

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s lower than every other number I’ve seen in this thread by far

matcha_addict ,

Are you sure? Check again. I didn’t scroll too far, but saw $6, $35, $20, $65 and $30. All are lower.

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

I meant the cost per user. You can’t really compare total costs

imaqtpie ,

For cost per user, it’s only 3 cents. A few others are around 10 cents per user, and the rest are significantly higher.

The instances with lower total cost also have much lower activity, lemmy.ml has 2.4k active users but still only 80€ per month. Impressive.

hark , to technology in Bots are running rampant. How do we stop them from ruining Lemmy?
@hark@lemmy.world avatar

Is this a problem here? One thing we should also avoid is letting paranoia divide the community. It’s very easy to take something like this and then assume everyone you disagree with must be some kind of bot, which itself is damaging.

SpaceCadet ,
@SpaceCadet@feddit.nl avatar

Is this a problem here?

Not yet, but it most certainly will be once Lemmy grows big enough.

KairuByte ,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yeah, it’s a problem. You just don’t see it as often yet. A while back there were a large number of communities being blasted by bots, and they would make it into the hot category because nothing else was going on at the time.

bizarroland , to explainlikeimfive in Explain like I am a moron. If the US is such apparently a badass super power it has never tried to take over another country to expand its influence and status?

If we tried to take over say Canada and Mexico for instance, being the easiest targets, the rest of the world will rise up against us.

Sure, we have a huge military and a lot of nukes, but they have nukes also and a hell of a lot more money and manpower.

The only way we can win would be to launch a preemptive nuclear strike against the eastern side of the planet and assuming that we don't get nuked back to the Stone age in return immediately launch a strike against Canada and Mexico while the rest of the world is cleaning up after the shit we started.

9 times out of 10, almost everyone in America dies, and the rest get to spend 150 years paying back for the damages.

1 time out of 10, we become king shit of a hell hole of our own creation.

Rhynoplaz ,

It was pre nukes, but we actually did go to war with Mexico. How do you think we got Texas?

bizarroland ,

We weren't a badass superpower when that happened. We were just in a place where the actual superpowers of the time were unable and unwilling to spend the money needed to defend Mexico from us.
