Hello fellow hydro homie

notagoblin , to linux in [Unpopular opinion] Linux is not a good choice for regular users

Mate. Stick with Windows or MacOS. I don’t think Linux is for you.

unexposedhazard , to patientgamers in Seeing the decrease in the % of Outlast players who achieved basic game progress achievements, I find it amusing to think about those who chickened out mid-game and never returned.

Not to ruin your fun but i think thats how most game achievement distrubtions look like. The further into the game the achievement, the less people will have played long enough to get it.

NuXCOM_90Percent ,

Yup. Was finally getting around to Pillars of Eternity a few weeks back and was very amused at the delta between finishing Act 3 and Act 4 (since Act 4 is like a fifteen minute dungeon). After Pathfinder Kingmaker I can’t necessarily fault anyone who said “I played this game for 40 hours and I just can’t anymore” but… yeah.

I also vaguely recall Outlast being part of a humble bundle or two? Not sure if just owning the game adds you to the Steam percentages but I am sure plenty of people started it for like two minutes and instantly noped out for whatever reason.

@oce@jlai.lu avatar

I don’t think so, checking other games, the first progress achievement has much higher percentage and the decrease is slower.

Edit: Some examples of what I say.

I mostly use Signal and qksms for SMS. Also use element(Matrix).

Here’s an anecdote. Recently, I got a 14yo (I believe) MSI MS-AC73 AIO (i3-2120, 4GB DDR3, 120GB SSD), mostly to use as a 1080p display, but it had a free PC inside as a bonus. For shits and giggles I started installing different OSes on it. First was XP. finding drivers was a pain but doable, since the machine is old af. But no matter what I did, Intel GPU control panel didn’t want to center 3:4 games properly.

Since it wasn’t working so well, I decided to go the opposite side of the spectrum and install W11, to see how horrible it would be. After many hours of convincing W11 to install on this machine (which is surprisingly not Copilot+ compliant), I finally got it to boot with a local account, with all devices recognized (including the touch screen). MFW when it runs pretty decently all things considered. I went ahead and removed all the extra crap using CTT Debloater. Played a couple retro PC games, installed FF and watched some YT, which manages to run at 1080p without dropped frames.

Now, of course, I decided to dualboot Linux, cause duh. Picked the latest Manjaro (KDE), hoping it will handle games better in case I try anything (might be an uneducated choice). Install is much easier, of course, but everything also works out of the box. My disappointment when same FF massively drops frames on YT. Touch controls technically work, but it doesn’t show the touch locations and other minor issues.

In the end, I mostly use the neutered W11 (too lazy to downgrade to W10), cause it plays videos much better and W95-98 games. But if somebody can tell me how to fix Linux video playback issues, that would be great, as I want to make it my Linux daily driver.

RobotZap10000 ,

If it’s just YouTube that’s an issue, have you searched for vaapi in about:config? That ancient CPU probably can’t handle the video with software decoding.

abfarid ,
@abfarid@startrek.website avatar

I don’t remember if I tried Plex/Jellyfin, but I’ll check vaapi thingy when I use it next time. In Firefox settings, right? It’s still weird that it works fine in Windows Firefox, but not Linux Firefox.

BCsven ,

The stuttering YT showed up for me recently, it was fine months back. Something change in Firefox or a linux package, but I have been too lazy to investigate since I rarely watch youtube

mammata , to science_memes in Caption this.

Ha, I immediately recognized the source of this picture. It’s from a Madonna music video of ‘4 minutes’ (ca. 1:15 min)

Practice I guess. I learned in a hs computers class where we had to do timed assignments, copying spreadsheets and transcribing speech and such. Hunt and Peck was simply too slow to do it, we had to learn our homerow to get a pass.

Also death to neoliberalism.

greywolf0x1 OP ,

Thanks for your reply, my high school equivalent never had such, our computer classes were spent in front of barely functional monitors with MS word open as we learnt the “CTRL +” commands while never as much as touching the keyboards

TerkErJerbs , to nostupidquestions in Is it me or is everyone in hexbear insane?

idk, I’ve seen all the hype around hexbear users being obnoxious around Lemmy (including our own instance debating blocking the instance, followed by several of their members brigading the thread true to form)… but I’ve explored the communities on the instance itself and even subscribed to some of them like mutual aid, gaming etc, and those that I’m watching are actually just normal people doing normal things if more left than some other similar groups. In my experience it isn’t “all” hexbear users, because that would be a dumb generalization.

There are some assholes on that instance to be sure. Show me one that this isn’t true of. I’m glad our instance didn’t block them because I now get to decide for myself. I block communities and/or users if they’re a problem for me. I think that’s a good way.

ryathal ,

The brigading was really annoying though, but I never noticed anything else bad about them. I don’t use ‘all’ very much and that is probably why.

TerkErJerbs ,

Yeah it was, but it was only a few individuals. It wasn’t the entire population of the instance. I do sort by All quite a bit and honestly I don’t see much of note from any one instance other than weird porn or niche meme communities that I block individually as needed. I just nuke communities and individuals that annoy me.

CodexArcanum , to asklemmy in Touch Typing

Try a typing game, there’s lots of them now in several genres. I learned to touch type in secondary school, doing the old fashioned thing of taping a sheet of paper over the keyboard (and typing under it) so you can’t see the keys. That works but I believe in the educational power of games, and it’ll be more fun.

Otherwise, just practice. If you use lemmy on mobile, try switching to desktop to type more. Start writing letters to people or short stories or anything that just encourages you to type more.

greywolf0x1 OP ,

Ok, I’l look into those games, I know I have to put in practice but getting started is somehow uncomfortable, that’s why I’m looking for tips to improve the experience

the limited time I spend in front of my desktop, I’m preoccupied with learning other stuff, practicing this alongside makes me slower

thanks for your reply though

TimLovesTech ,
@TimLovesTech@badatbeing.social avatar

I was also going to suggest some form of “make it a game”. I think maybe even more important in the beginning, is fighting the urge to backspace and fix every typo you make. Doing this will break any rhythm you may have in the moment, and in the beginning I found making it through a practice session more beneficial than correctness. Leaving error also allows you to go back and identify keystrokes (or patterns) that give you the most trouble and let you then focus on them until proficient.

Good luck!

I’ve never seen a single post or comment from hexbear, I didn’t even block them maybe my instance maintainer did block them so I don’t know lol, what did they do to get so much hate?

EABOD25 OP ,

I’d recommend keeping it that way

sumguyonline , to technology in Bots are running rampant. How do we stop them from ruining Lemmy?

Make your own bot account that randomly(or not randomly) posts something bots will reply to, a system based response preferably. Last I was looking at bots they were simply programs, and have dev commands that can return information on things like system resources, or OS version. Your bot posts commands built in from the bot apps Dev, the bots reply like bots do with their version, system resources, or whatever they have built in. Boom - Banned instantly.
