carl_dungeon , to games in How to decide what kind of controller one should purchase?

Ps5 controller is Bluetooth, works for me without any special drivers. Has native support in some games for the haptic triggers and touch pad. It’s a fantastic general purpose unit. The Nintendo switch classic NES controllers are awesome for retro emulation too- also Bluetooth. They make NES/SNES/N64 variants- but really the ps5 will handle all those use cases and feel just fine for any modern gaming.

Too hairy.

Like most questions that devolve to, “What would the world be like if people stopped doing bad things and just <insert wish here>?” pretty great. (The wish in this case is help each other with raising children.) Now if only we could get people to stop doing bad things.

utopiah , to linux in Is Linux As Good As We Think It Is?

I’d clarify that the shear customizability of Linux is optional.

Take a SteamDeck with SteamOS versus a RPi with e.g Debian.

If you “just” play with the SteamDeck and you don’t tinker, well, it “just works”. In most, even though not all, normal situations, e.g plugging a screen, pairing a BT headphone, mouse, keyboard, etc it is solid. It has no problem even while using a compatibility layer like Proton for games themselves made for Windows. It even enable some tinkering thanks to its immutable OS and let the player switch to desktop mode. Not everything works but my personal experience since it’s been out has been pretty much flawless.

Now, take a RPi, with just as stable hardware, with Debian, even stable, and put on it some IoT device, make some weird modifications for it, try a bunch of stuff, remove package, tinker more, chances are it will still work. Tinker more, make stranger modifications to the point it becomes unstable. Is it Linux itself? I’d argue it’s not. I’d argue that instead because we CAN tinker we sometimes do then forget that it’s not the same context as something expected to run without hiccup because it’s been limited to basically the same verified usage.

So… IMHO Linux is even better than it is, we just shouldn’t confuse weird (and important) tinkering with how it can be actually used day to day.

This. I distrohopped for about 4 years. I am now on Bazzite since 4 months ago and I love that it just works.

Churbleyimyam , to linux in Is Linux As Good As We Think It Is?

When I’ve thought about this is in the past I’ve concluded that my expectations of Linux are actually higher than Windows or Mac. It’s given me the expectation that if something doesn’t work the way I want it then it will be possible to make it do that, whereas with other operating systems I have been more inclined to just accept a limitation and move on.

Yeah, I’d like to use the network, but the reviews are pretty bad. That and the lack of UWB makes it seem pretty weak.

In addition to many of the fine points made in other comments I think it’s silly to overlook the power of celebrity worship and weird-ass parasocial relationships with famous people.

There exists a large number of people who aren’t really interested in discussing <topic_x>, they just want to know what <favourite celebrity whos life I have deluded myself into thinking is attainable by me> thinks about the topic so that they can regurgitate it and feel like they’re “the same”.

I’m sure if Chappell Roan or whatever “the kids” think is cool these days had jumped to Mastodon we’d be seeing something very different. TBH I’m mildly surprised that we didn’t see more record labels standing up instances. It’s always boggled me that people have just trusted the service desperately trying to be known as “X” as an authority on identity.

joel_feila ,
@joel_feila@lemmy.world avatar

One reaon for why any company would rather just an x alternative rather start up a lemmy or mastodon instance of their own is externalize the responsibility. If someone else run the site then you can’t be blamed when it goes down

xmunk , to asklemmy in In your opinion how do countries get rid of "terrorists" either within our outside?

Provide a high enough standard of living that extremism costs an individual too much to engage in. This may sound a bit dystopian but a fat and happy populace is much easier to govern than a starving and desperate one.

Also, education - not like nationalistic bullshit education but a general education that leads people to nuture their empathy and social awareness. When people see desperate situations and no effort to address them they’re more likely to turn to extremism then if they’re aware of an effort (even if it’s ineffective) because if there’s an effort ongoing the politically active will be more likely to join the effort rather than fighting the establishment.

Lastly, a non-shitty election system that makes everyone (not just swing state voters) feel like their voice is being heard. If you don’t think you’ll be able to effect change within the system you’re more likely to turn to extremism.
