ClassifiedPancake , (edited ) to asklemmy in Do you have a form of government you invented/conceived, either as an idea or for fiction (or a favorite from someone else)? How does it work?

I haven’t put much thought into it but I recently had this idea that we do not vote for a party that runs the whole government for a few years anymore. Instead we vote project based. That way a whole party can’t ruin everything and they can each do what they are best at.

For that to work, voting needs to be much more convenient somehow because it would happen many times a year.

Projects would be proposed by the parties to an independent board that will organize and validate them and make them available to the public to be voted on, like petitions. Before it starts, details can be sorted out or changed publicly.

After a project is done (or after a specified time) there will be a public retrospective on how things went and maybe it will continue or not.

I’m not sure if/how that would work. I guess there needs to be some kind of long running government with one representative that people can point to? Maybe not?

My hope is also the different parties (and citizens) would be less hostile to each other and actually work on things because they don’t have to fear the next big election.

It could also mean there are more disasters like Brexit.

Anyways, this idea is just fresh in my mind and not fully fleshed out.

kenkenken , to asklemmy in Do you consider the concept of honor to be self-explanatory? Why?
@kenkenken@sh.itjust.works avatar

Honor is a sense of a child doing things for which parents will praise them. An adult substitutes parents with other people and institutions, but honor is still a desire to be accepted and praised by others and anticipation of it.

thebardingreen , (edited ) to programmer_humor in How would your codebase (personal projects, work projects etc.) look as a burger?
@thebardingreen@lemmy.starlightkel.xyz avatar

My code projects lately?

“This project uses an API written in PHP, with HTML in Lua (OpenResty) and JavaScript. We’re starting with the PHP component, please write me a burger with cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup and mustard.”

“Absolutely! I’d be happy to help with that! I understand that we’re creating a burger in PHP. Here is a burger, with cheese, bacon, lettuce tomato and mustard. Explanation of the burger: The bacon is on top of the cheese, so it doesn’t fall off. The lettuce is included, to create an underlying HTML structure.”

https://lemmy.starlightkel.xyz/pictrs/image/79a6fd96-5fd9-4be1-b3b8-ffbce6641633.png

“Um, that’s not at all what I asked for. First of all, you completely forgot the ketchup, which I explicitly told you was a requirement. Secondly, you said there was mustard, but I don’t see any. Third, the cheese is cottage cheese? No one puts that on burgers! Why would you put cottage cheese? Third, the bacon is turkey bacon. That’s not what I wanted at all. On top of that, the lettuce is UNDER the burger, not ON it. We’re not writing HTML, this is meant to be a rest API. All the output should be JSON.

Please try again. Write me a burger in PHP with pig bacon, mustard and ketchup, which you forgot to include last time, cheddar cheese (NOT cottage cheese) and tomato, pickles and lettuce INSIDE the bun. This is an API, so don’t write any HTML!”

“I appologize for the misunderstanding. Here is your burger with bacon (made from pigs, not turkey), mustard, ketchup, cheddar cheese, tomato, pickles and lettuce inside the bun. I understand this is an API, so I’ve taken out the HTML. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can help you with.”

https://lemmy.starlightkel.xyz/pictrs/image/b3aaee27-1097-483d-bd3a-0b14fe64262f.png

“It looks like you’ve called a function to put the lettuce inside the bun, but you never created that function?”

“You are correct. Your PHP code would need to have the function defined to put the lettuce inside the bun. Here is your updated PHP code with the putLettuceInsideBun function included.”

https://lemmy.starlightkel.xyz/pictrs/image/55ce6d44-4425-481a-a133-afd3f18387e4.png

“Thank you, there’s a tomato and the lettuce is inside the bun now. I’m not sure why you called the putLettuceInsideBun() function twice, but at least it’s in there now. I note there’s still no bacon, cheese, ketchup or mustard. You know what? I’m just going to write those parts myself!”

“Writing PHP code can be a fun and educational challenge! Please let me know if I can assist you any further with your PHP hot dog grilling project.”

jrgn , to linux in Lemmy predicts: Chromebooks will become the new Thinkpads

I have been repurposing my EOL Chromebook, and I don’t think they will ever be able to compete with ThinkPads. I like my Chromebook since it is so damn small, however the specs are really bad. And everything is soldered right on the motherboard. So I have 64GB storage (plus an SD-card) and 4GB RAM. I have enabled ZRAM so the CPU is helping out a bit. But even so I struggle with the memory. Browsers are such memory hogs!

Test driven politics. Every law must be accompanied by an objective goal that can be measured. The test must be evaluated after x years. If the goal was not achieved the law must be changed.

xilliah ,

That’s interesting. Can you elaborate?

It makes me think of why the trains in the NL are always on time. The company gets massive subsidies if they are above 95% punctual, so if they go below, that means less pay for the management.

intelisense , to linux in Lemmy predicts: Chromebooks will become the new Thinkpads

New Thinkpads are still great Linux laptops, so there’s a steady stream of newer 2nd hand models coming on the market.

Stupid fucking Lenovo is starting to buy back EoL computers. I swear it’s to cut down on the available second hand computers on the market.

kenkenken , to linux in Lemmy predicts: Chromebooks will become the new Thinkpads
@kenkenken@sh.itjust.works avatar

Probably we don’t need new Thinkpads. And the old either. The main motivation behind the desire of people to by old Thinkpads is a desire to be a part of the club and culture, to look like a hacker, a geek. The same motivation had early apple fanboys. I hope smarter people will become less dependent from such crowdthinking phenomena not more.

solrize ,

Old thinkpads work well and (opposite of Apple) they are cheap. I buy them from familiarity but am open to other suggestions in that price range.

PM_Your_Nudes_Please , to lemmyshitpost in I need to survive for 3 days while pooping, and eating as much as possible. It can't take up too much space. What food do I pack?

Gas station roller grill taquitos, a 5lb bag of Haribo sugar-free gummy bears, and a case of bottled water.

Start with the taquitos, then eat the gummy bears a handful at a time. You’ll know when to switch to water.

Lot easier to swap parts on a thinkpad.

Darohan , to linux in The Best way to switch to Linux is to NOT

Was ready to downvote but this is actually a really good guide, well done OP! The one issue I will raise, though, because I faced it myself, is that as long as you’re still using Windows, it is way too easy to just go back to using the Windows programs not the open source ones. Only through switching to Linux can you really “throw yourself into the deep end” and force yourself to learn these new things. Microsoft has made themselves the “path of least resistance” (or at least that of “most momentum” for a reason) and if you’ve been using a computer for a while, it’s a lot easier to break the habits and realise the benefits by giving yourself no other option than it is by trying to discipline yourself into using the new options.

Nilz ,

Agreed, this has been my experience as well. I tried switching to full time Linux multiple times. I had already used it on my laptop for years but on my desktop I kept going back to Windows because things on Windows just worked the way I wanted and thought that for some things there weren’t any Linux alternatives.

That was until two years ago I challenged myself to only use Linux for a month. I’ve been using Linux on my desktop ever since and only use Windows now and then to play a single game that doesn’t work on Linux due to anti cheat.
