Also remember Horse Armor DLC for Oblivion, released by Bethesda? Considered by many to be the catalyst of this kind of BS.

Nilz ,

Steam didn’t get to where it is because of market abuse but because of providing a good service, or at least a service that was better than anything else at the time by far. Valve are reaping the rewards now, but are also still providing an arguably better service than it’s competitors. It’s a bit odd that you want to punish a company just for being successful.

Valve isn’t perfect and they’re profit driven, but they’re privately owned and the goals isn’t maximizing profit, which isn’t something you can say about most of their competitors.

Nilz ,

Yes, the profit is excessive, but it’s because they have a good product where the competition has not really been putting in much effort and letting Valve get away with it for so long.

Valve’s goal isn’t to maximize profit because they don’t have shareholders that demand it. If they really wanted to maximize profits then there’s a whole lot more to squeeze out of Steam and the games they made. And yes I agree Valve can lower their cut and still make bucket loads of money, but I highly doubt that if they did reduce their cut it would actually lead to cheaper games except for a maybe a few. Because just like Valve, the devs and publishers are profit driven and why would they turn down a potentially bigger profit?

Should I use a rolling distro?

Currently, I use Debian on my server. I have an Intel Arc GPU that I use for transcoding, however hardware encoding doesn’t work. I am able to get a slight performance benefit from decoding, but encoding would be much better. I have an A750 in my desktop (not server), and was able to get hardware acceleration working, but only...

Nilz ,

Which kernel do you use on Debian? IIRC support for Intel Arc was added in 6.0 or higher. I am using Proxmox (based on Debian) and I had to upgrade from 5.15 to 6.2 kernel to get hardware decoding to work. Have you checked the Jellyfin manual? It’s pretty elaborate on how to get Intel QSV working.

Nilz ,

It was never officially named PSX, but it was called that way by people for some reason. I guess to differentiate the fat and slim versions.

Nilz , (edited )

Steam Deck runs on Arch so it’s no surprise it’s up so high.

Edit: it doesn’t count as Arch. The Steam Survey results page has a bug where it doesn’t show SteamOS as top listing for Linux OS when combined Windows, Mac and Linux view is selected.

Nilz , (edited )

That’s interesting. When you look at the steam survey results under OS Version, with Windows Mac and Linux combined it shows under Linux that Arch is in first followed by Ubuntu 22, but when you switch the view to Linux only, the OS Version shows SteamOS Holo in first, followed by Arch, then Flatpack runtime and Ubuntu. So yes you’re right.https://sopuli.xyz/pictrs/image/af8117a8-99e9-4948-810b-9c0cf5c35419.webpThis shows why I thought SteamOS counted as Arch. My bad.

Nilz ,

Oops. Thanks autocorrect

To add to this: A certain type of Soviet submarine used a lead-bismuth alloy as coolant for their reactor. The coolant solidifies at ambient temperature so it had to be heated indefinitely by some way or another or else it solidified and trashed the reactor. I don’t think any of them exist anymore since Russia wasn’t able to afford sustaining the giant navy after the Soviet collapse.

Just goes to show how insane nuclear submarine engineering is, or was at some point.

Nilz ,

“Finally freed of those pesky Windows updates!”

Nilz ,

Not officially. Only Ryzen Pro have official (unregistered) ECC support and not many motherboards support it either. AFAIK Threadripper doesn’t officially support it either but I could be wrong.

Nilz ,

I guess that the devs needed to strike a balance between the old style and making sure it fits with the current style since I think you can combine tiles from all themes in a single map.

Nilz ,

It looks that way because he is holding the Game Boy Pocket and not the OG Game Boy

Nilz ,

I remember playing on a RPG invasion server and it was one of the best gaming experiences up to that point. It was PVE where you’d get XP for every monster you killed and wave you’d survive and you could use it to upgrade your weapons and stats. Sadly just a few days after discovering it, the server went offline and I haven’t found another one like it.

Nilz , (edited )

I’m guessing it’s the same common issue present on many Gigabyte AM4 boards. The IT8792E (and perhaps others) doesn’t work with the kernel driver. There are workarounds but they make it so that other ITxxxxE chips don’t work. I have a Gigabyte X570 Ultra and can only use ~half of the fan headers with lm_sensors. I haven’t been able to get them all working.

github.com/LibreHardwareMonitor/…/251Here’s some more info that may be useful.

Edit: or section 6.6 of the Arch wiki link you shared.

Nilz ,

I like how his name is “President Joe Biden” as if not to be confused with the other Joe Biden. Also this insinuates that he is the president of Threads, or the Fediverse, or even the world maybe?

Nilz ,

Ah I see, understandable. Still it’s presented like he’s the universal/everyone’s president.

Nilz ,

Fair point. Can’t argue with that.

Nilz ,

Why would anyone want to intentionally produce more than the current demand which lowers prices and therefore profit?

Unless you mean they produce more to lower their own costs, which I doubt would really be the case here.

Nilz ,

For me it was migrating my Arch install from EXT4 to ZFS. GRUB had to be configured in particular ways to get it to work with ZFS and I didn’t do it properly so it wouldn’t/couldn’t boot.

Then I updated ZFS to a version that wasn’t supported by GRUB yet so I chrooted into my installation to switch to Systemd-boot with Unified Kernel Images. Now I still can’t figure out how to add a boot entry for Windows. I followed the proper steps I think but selecting the Windows entry just reloads Systemd-boot.

Nilz ,

Maybe that’s why Linux users enjoy old ThinkPads so much, you can just pull out the battery without opening the laptop.

Nilz ,

Do you also think the same about alcohol, tobacco, drugs and gambling?

Nilz ,

You seem to be missing the point.

in fact the US is stricter on drugs and alcohol than a lot of it’s peer nations

This is exactly why I posted my comment: Those things are regulated since they have age restrictions/bans/taxes(tarrifs?). TikTok doesn’t have any of those. It’s not like you can tax TikTok use like you can tax alcohol use so I don’t understand your comparison with Smirnoff.

Nilz ,

Care to elaborate? Sounds promising

Nilz ,

This reminds me of the e-SATA port that was also a USB port.

After default password disclosed online, 1200 inmates have prison issued laptops seized by guards, threatening their ability to make class deadlines (www.opencampusmedia.org)

Zhang, an electrical engineer in Boston, decided to post about trying to unlock his Justice Tech Solutions Securebook 5 on the social platform X. The thread went viral — also catching the attention of Washington corrections officials, who have used the device for college programming since 2020....

Nilz ,

And it should require copying the title from the article and not allow editorializing it (or only slightly).

Nilz ,

He states the AAA market is volatile because succes is never guaranteed. Hogwarts did well, but:

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, was a disappointment for the company.

Newsflash: good games people actually want to play do well and bad games no one wants to play do bad.

How are these companies so out of touch?

Nilz ,

Yeah exactly. Also annoying things like “let’s change this concept that works by adding stuff that’s in fashion but doesn’t fit the game at all”. Like Battlefield 2042, the concept of Battlefield stayed relatively the same throughout years and releases and it just worked, but they just had to include heroes this time because hero shooters were popular. It doesn’t matter that it meant there were only doppelganger heroes running around instead of an actual army of soldiers.

I believe bullshit like this is exactly what made Suicide Squad such a let down.

Nilz ,

How do you do this? Just fork it? I don’t know much about GitHub (and alternatives)

Nilz ,

Nintendo would rather want games to not be preserved so people can shell out some money to play a remaster on the next gen or 2.

Follow-up: OpenBSD routers on AliExpress mini PCs

I got lots of replies to the last post showing the little OpenBSD internet gateway setup (super interesting; thanks!). Here's more info and pictures:
https://www.srcbeat.com/2024/02/aliexpress-openbsd-router/

Something I've been meaning to share for years now.

@selfhosted

Nilz ,

This is really cool. I’ve been interested in running something like this. Does it make sense to have this as a dedicated firewall in front of my Unifi lan?

Nilz ,

What I meant was, I have a Unifi router and was thinking of putting a dedicated firewall in front of it. Does that make any sense or would the firewall on the unify be just as capable? Before the Dream Machine that is my current router I was running an opnsense router with my Unifi switches behind it so I’m not super unfamiliar with it I guess.

Nilz ,

You can always try professional data recovery services. It just depends on how much the data is worth to you.

Nilz ,

I love Slay the Spire. It’s been a while since I played it on PC but nowadays I play it on my phone or tablet every now and then. I backed the Slay the Spire boardgame on Kickstarter that will be shipped some time soon and I can’t wait to try it out.

I think the max I got was Ascension 6, I’m not that good at deck builders I think. The Silent and Ironclad are my favourites and I play whatever fits my mood. Getting insane high block together body slam is just as much fun as getting insanely high poison stacks. I never once made it through act 4 sadly.

The music is also something I really enjoy, it fits the game so well! Sometimes I listen to it while driving or working.

Nilz ,

The exact same ones yes.

Nilz ,

Uhh… Aren’t… Aren’t these two statements kinda contradictory?

No no, you see; it performs reasonably consistency under varying real world conditions but for a CPU to truly shine it needs to handle all workloads, including unrealistic synthetic ones.

Nilz ,

I love this game so much. The video is very accurate but doesn’t mention that once you overcome the hurdles this game throws at you, you can become so damn powerful that your wand can shoot 50 nukes per second that each erase the entire world you are in which temporarily reduces your framerate to several seconds per frame.

Yet you’ll still die if you step into two pixels of the purple stuff and something shoots at you while you got turned into a flying sheep.

Nilz ,

Or if you’re a psychopath with a desktop full of icons and files. Shudders

Nilz ,

I heard there’s this website called piratedbay.

Nilz ,

Everyone already gave a shit about this a long time ago. It’s also one of the reasons Ethereum switched from proof of work to proof of stake.

Nilz ,

I remember running into this issue back in the day. I think it happens when a mod corrupts game filed and I could only fix it by doing a clean reinstall and avoid the mod that was causing it. Reading through the comments on the Steam guide there are others who ran into this issue and at least one of them got it working by doing a clean install and trying again.

Raspberry Pi is planning a London IPO, but its CEO expects “no change” in focus (arstechnica.com)

The business arm of Raspberry Pi is preparing to make an initial public offering (IPO) in London. CEO Eben Upton tells Ars that should the IPO happen, it will let Raspberry Pi’s not-for-profit side expand by “at least a factor of 2X.” And while it’s “an understandable thing” that Raspberry Pi enthusiasts could be...
