56_ , to nostupidquestions in What other animals "make music" together? (Specifically harmony or rhythmic coordination)
@56_@lemmy.ml avatar

I believe birds have a very different perspective of harmonisation. What they sing might sound harmonised to them, but not to us (and vice versa).

LesserAbe OP ,

Lol well birds are never going to make it big in the industry with that attitude (also I don’t think it really counts as harmonization if the notes don’t line up either. More like counterpoint or something)

NegativeInf ,

With different hearing ranges for different species, their harmonies are probably different. It’s like watching one of those videos of what a cat hears vs what you hear vs what a dog hears. The ratios between the notes in the full range may be different, so what is pleasant may be different.

Even for humans there are different tunings starting at different base frequencies. So like, maybe you need bird ears to hear the perfect harmonies they produce. Tho, most of the animal kingdom when vocalizing are just screaming “Fuck me!”

LesserAbe OP ,

You and the other commenter are right, I don’t expect birds to be like “let’s both chirp and make a minor third interval”. I’m sure if they harmonized it would be for whatever sounds right based on how they evolved and learned.

What I’m getting at is it’s not harmonizing if they just happen to be making sounds at the same time. For the purposes of my question harmonizing is when we’re intentionally making two distinct tones simultaneously.

So two birds that are just chirping along their individual songs and they happen to overlap so they each chirp complimentary notes isn’t what I’m interested in. I want to know if any animals mean to harmonize.

GameMuse , to linux_gaming in Gaming on Linux is great!

Yeah Windows has been giving me the shits of years finally moves to linux a few months ago and only one issue I have for gaming is when I am playing balders gate 3 and a switch to another app while it’s running it crashes the game but yeah blown away how great it has been

Waveform , (edited ) to asklemmy in Best android app suggestions?

These are all free without ads:

VLC for movies and music.

Simple Text Editor, which is a lightweight and easy to use text editor You can configure it save on exit and open the last file.

ReadEra PDF reader.

RadioDroid is a free and open source internet radio player. Search for stations and genres around rhe world. It’s waaay better than any of the other things on the Play Store.

Shader Editor if you like programming GLSL fragment shaders.

Krita for digital painting on a tablet.

Autodesk Sketchbook for digital painting on a phone or tablet. It has a paid tier, but the free version is great on its own.

Open Camera, open source camera software. It lets you overcome the limitations of the default app. I like using it when I want a more analog look (I disabled image noise reduction in app).

Manual Camera is a good camera app if you want total control over certain thing like focus, white level, etc.

Hacker’s Keyboard. It’s got freakin arrow keys. Plus easy access to common characters needed for programming.

And last but not least

F-Droid, which is like a play store for free and open source software (FOSS). Lots of things there.

@PP_BOY_@lemmy.world avatar

Salt water’s a fool’s game, you’ll never kill a grown tree that way. Look into limb girdling

LordGimp OP ,

I don’t want to go on their property. I don’t even want to reach over the fence line. I want to use science and chemistry to murder the shit out of the parts on my side of the fence. As a welder, my first instinct was actually to use fire. However, the officials around where I live are particularly jumpy about starting fires. Its not like I wouldn’t have a running hose in my other hand.

PP_BOY_ ,
@PP_BOY_@lemmy.world avatar

In which case, why not just spray herbicide on the limb? You’d need a constant supply of gallons of saltwater over several days to really stop it

Back up a second. Reread your question.

Waveform , to asklemmy in What web browser extensions would you highly recommend to others?

For Firefox:

UBlock Origin, of course.

And that extension that turns all Reddit pages into old Reddit pages. (I hate the redesign with a passion.)

TehBamski OP ,
@TehBamski@lemmy.world avatar

Reddit Enhancement Suite I believe is the one you are referencing.

Waveform ,

On Android I’m using Old Reddit Redirect. (I imagine just changing the URL is simpler, besides I’m not there enough to desire tons of features… I don’t even have a Reddit acct. currently.)

On PC I just use old reddit boolmarks, and a bookmarklet that toggles to old Reddit :D

sleepyTonia ,
@sleepyTonia@programming.dev avatar

No, this one is on life support and it’s the one which injects extra controls for image links, Twitter links and whatnot. The one you are thinking of is banned old Reddit redirect. And yeah, couldn’t use Reddit without it

taaz , to asklemmy in What web browser extensions would you highly recommend to others?

May only be available on Firefox:

Better Youtube Shorts (the shorts act more like normal videos, with rewind controls etc)

Decentraleyes (should help with website load speed by not fetching all the common CDN hosted stuff, as well as provide better privacy)

Song Identifier

wizardbeard ,

Related to CDN stuff, there’s LocalCDN, which I believe downloads the most commonly used scripts from various CDNs and hosts them locally, reducing the amount of tracking they can do as they aren’t being pulled from the source each time.

savedbythezsh ,

That’s what decentraleyes does as well

Good work is being done and I hope more and more games start to get native support as well.

10_0 , to linux_gaming in Just Switch Over

Ppl complain because of a lack of 100% compability with all games. For most ppl if they know they can’t play the game they want, they’re not going to live without it just to make the switch when what their doing now is working.

RBWells , to asklemmy in What habits changed your life?

I have always exercised but gaining weight and lifting weights increased my bone mass at an age that it is supposed to be impossible to do that. I would rather be skinny, looks-wise, it was my identity and now I am so fucking medium sized but feel better, sleep better, and presumably will hold up better.

So, oddly enough, eating regularly and doing heavier exercise.

10_0 , to asklemmy in What web browser extensions would you highly recommend to others?

Ublock, decentralize, adblockplus, noscript, snowflake. (This is what I used on ff, but I use brave for a while now and its so much easier, brave + invidious)

ivn ,

Decentralise and adblockplus do nothing uBlock Origin doesn’t already do. You can remove them. Also it’s uBlock Origin, not just uBlock.
