Gotta be honest, downloading security related software from a random drive is sending off sketchy vibes. Fundamentally, it’s no different than a random untrusted git repo. But, I really would suggest using some source control rather than trying to roll your own with diff archives.

Likewise, I would also suggest adding in some unit and functional tests. Not only would it help maintain software quality, but also build confidence in other folks using the software you are releasing.

S_S OP ,

I totally agree it is no different than a random untrusted git repo, so I believe no additional trust is gained if I uploaded it to any of them

I think version control this way is totally fine, every commit in the linux kernel is mailed as a text diff on the different mailing lists

As of trusting this or any security related software I believe you have to ultimately read and understand the software you are using, or someone you trust has to do it, I can’t do that, I can only answer questions as they arrive

I also agree unit tests are probably a good idea for those reasons as well, I don’t have any right now but I’m open to do them some time or receive patches with them

I like your feedback, thanks for it

ramielrowe ,

Git was literally written by Linus to manage the source of the kernel. Sure patches are proposed via mailing list, but the actual source is hosted and managed via git. It is literally the gold standard, and source control is a foundational piece of software development. Same with not just unit tests, but functional testing too. You absolutely should not be putting off testing.

S_S OP ,

I’ve done a lot of testing, not skipping that, writing automated tests are a whole different thing however, it is not as straight forward and is very often skipped for a large amount of projects to be honest

Git was made to handle the sheer amount of commits and people contributing to the linux kernel, the first versions of linux is just Linus uploading the code to a FTP, git is just a tool for Linus to patch his local git tree in a fast way with all the patches he gets from different channels and manage a large public repository

Unlike Linus I’m not planning to be of control of a public development process for my software, so a VCS doesn’t make much sense in my opinion

Before git it was far from standard to use a source control system on small projects that weren’t about to be a public development process anyway, while it is a gold standard for source control today, I don’t think one have to use source control on every software project, like it used to be

On Fedora Atomic Desktops:

If you deleted /etc then you can copy it from /usr/etc

Your fstab, shadow, crypttab, gpasswd and quite some other files are gone though, which is problematic.

Almost everything was web based. Being in computer science i did have to write code and compile executables that my TAs running Windows could run; so it wasn’t perfectly smooth. There was also Respondus Lockdown, but I could borrow a laptop from the library to use it.

@maxenmajs@lemmy.world avatar

His audience definitely leans that way. I don’t get the impression that he has any agenda or conviction, but he consistently reacts to content that enables the alt-right. He’s been quite candid about getting into the react meta just for the money. Even so, he does seem to have unwittingly become an alt-right entry point.

It also feels that the money starts pouring in once a content creator taps towards the right. Much like criticism comes knocking if you go left.

@absGeekNZ@lemmy.nz avatar

What a great question.

A few that come to mind. (In no particular order)

  • Socrates and Aristotle - literally changed the way humanity as a whole thinks, their influence echoes thorough time their ideas are talked about 2500 years later.
  • Marcus Aurelius - stoic philosopher and emperor, set the standard for what a great ruler could be, modern politicians have nothing on him.
  • Albert Einstein - literally changed the way we look at the universe, overturned Newton and his theories have stood up to ever more precise tests.
  • Linus Torvolds - the impact of the Linux kernel on computing cannot be overstated, from the smallest single board computers to the biggest most powerful supercomputers, all run Linux. The internet wouldn’t be the same without it.
  • Johannes Guttenburg - inventer of the printing press, the wide dissemination of knowledge that directly stemmed from this invention changed the world.
  • Alexander Fleming - discovered penicillin, finally gave humanity an effective weapon against bacteria, penicillin and it’s derivatives have saved billions of lives.
  • Stanislav Petrov - Ignored the nuclear early warning system, which erroneously reported 6 launches from the US against the USSR. If he had followed protocol the resulting nuclear response would have triggered WWIII, he saved billions of people by not launching.

To those saying sports personalities, I doubt people will be talking about their achievements in couple of hundred years.

Edit: added Stanislav Petrov.

Whatever political stance he may hold, or whether he is conscious about it, he is an entrypoint.

His content is uncritical dogpile reactions and no-fact-checks perpetuating drama. Combined with zero effort community weeding.

While theoretically neutral, such hate cesspools are the culture that fuels the alt-right.

Ex CS student. I’m on 100 % Linux, even back then.
Huge advantage in the Linux/Unix, networking labs.

The main issues were Matlab (Octave is kinda ok, but must be tested before you submit your project),
FPGA simulator - Altera (no alternatives, but it can be run on a Windows VM),
3ds Max - must be run on bare-metal Windows (maybe GPU passthrough to a VM will work),
some old weird software,
C getch() on Linux.

No problems with MS Office, I can run whatever I want, just exported it to the PDF.
No heavy formatting in drafts helps with a group project.

FireWire400 , to mildlyinfuriating in UPS has started charging for pickups even if you have a prepaid label
@FireWire400@lemmy.world avatar

Can I just say how shitty UPS is with pick ups? Every time I have to RMA something through Dell’s support they would schedule a delivery of the replacement part and a pick up of the defective one through UPS, right? Not once did UPS actually show up to pick up the parts.

Even when I manually schedule a pick up with them they just don’t show up; they sent an confirmation email saying that they did, but the part is still where I placed it for pick up. And when I email UPS to tell them they just repeat what the confirmation email said.
