What’s even crazier is that corporate customers don’t actually deal with this in any way! There’s no Microsoft account required on an Active Directory controlled PC.

mark3748 ,

Windows 11 Enterprise likely uses a different OOBE, I just tell it to join during setup. At work, everything is image-based and pre-configured so no standard OOBE.

Like most things at MS, those with the resources get everything they want while the little guy gets screwed.

mark3748 ,

they aren’t rally a software dev company

CD Projekt is very much a software dev. I’m not sure why you would think they are not.

I mean I guess it’s better than xbox or playstations method which I honestly have no figured out yet.

Yeah, way better than… selecting the share button(?)

Apples AI is mostly processed on device. That’s why it takes an iPhone 15 pro or an M-series processor. They also claim that what is processed in the cloud is neither identifiable nor stored, just processed. We will know if that’s true (at least what is being sent) as soon as it gets out into the public and we can start picking apart the traffic.

There is no mention of opt-out or not yet, probably because we’re several months away from the actual release. I’m sure we’ll get more information before then.

Apple is bringing RCS to the iPhone in iOS 18 | The new standard will replace SMS as the default communication protocol between Android and iOS devices (www.theverge.com)

The long-awaited day is here: Apple has announced that its Messages app will support RCS in iOS 18. The move comes after years of taunting, cajoling, and finally, some regulatory scrutiny from the EU....

For example they could refuse to implement reactions or typing indicators

Reactions already work in MMS groups, use them every day.

or they could even deliberately compress videos

Except they’re already advertising improved quality of photos and video in non-iMessage chats. Doubt they would advertise a specific feature only to make it worse.

Watch: Adobe angers artists with new Photoshop terms (techcrunch.com)

Artists got an unpleasant surprise when they opened Photoshop this week, as they were shown a pop-up window asking them to agree to new terms of service. Among the changes: Adobe now says it has the right to access customers’ content through “automated or manual methods.”...

I need some advice on what to throw on this laptop - and some suggestions on how to squeeze the best performance out of this (Optimus vs. Proprietary NVIDIA vs. Open source drivers).

Optimus isn’t a driver, but a way for the laptop to use both the integrated graphics and the discreet card. It doesn’t work well with Linux so you’ll want to disable it in EFI. This will increase heat and energy use.

If you do end up wanting to use Optimus, the Arch wiki has a lot of good information. You should use the proprietary driver in nearly all cases.

As far as distros, take a look at Bazzite, it’s a gaming-focused distro and similar to the steam deck’s OS.

You’re trading HFCS for plain old sugar. Most fruits are approximately 50/50 fructose and glucose, while HFCS is between 42% and 55% fructose, with the balance being glucose.

Chemically and biologically, they are basically the same.

mark3748 ,

Well, it just says they’re including it with Game Pass. So you have the option of not actually purchasing the game for $70 (every year!) but you still get to play. There’s a lot of good games for both Xbox and PC so it’s a decent value proposition for a lot of people.

I don’t buy AAA games, so it’s kind of nice to have the option to play some of them without a big upfront investment. The real stars are the smaller and indie games.

It’s not for everyone, but for the cost of a Netflix subscription I can play a shitload of games on my PC and my kids get a huge library on the console.

Has ethernet become illegitimate? A librarian flipped out after spotting me using ethernet

I plugged into ethernet (as wifi w/captive portal does not work for me). I think clearnet worked but I have no interest in that. Egress Tor traffic was blocked and so was VPN. I’m not interested in editing all my scripts and configs to use clearnet, so the library’s internet is useless to me (unless I bother to try a tor...

mark3748 ,

Another library in the area has ethernet ports but they are just decoys (dead ports). I asked the librarian what the problem is, why they are disabled, and whether we can turn them on.

They’re not decoys, they’re just not patched. Because we don’t generally patch anything that’s not going to be in use. Also because some rando will probably attempt to plug their nasty ass laptop into it, which is also why we block port intrusions.

Now get the hell off my lawn LAN.

It is the only approved method for data destruction for the several banks and government agencies I support. If they trust it, I trust it.

I have checked a couple of times out of curiosity, after a secure erase the drive is as clean as if it had been DBANed. Sometimes things are standards because they work properly.

mark3748 ,

They offer other options for Microsoft accounts. Using it as a normal TOTP app is the same as any other Authenticator app.

It’s most likely the number matching requirement that the other person doesn’t like, or their employer has a policy that’s annoying.

mark3748 ,

You absolutely can, it’s just not easy.

RAID setup for Ubuntu media server

I recently acquired two used blade servers and a short rack to put them in. I’m planning to use one or the other as the replacement for a media server that died on me a bit ago. The old media server was just a little refurb dell workstation, with a single SSD in it, but the servers have 6 and 8 bays, respectively....

mark3748 ,

They’ll have to get a new SAS controller unless the RAID controller has an HBA mode. Running ZFS under a RAID controller is the best way to lose all of your data.

ZFS is wonderful but it takes quite a bit of planning and specialized knowledge to implement properly. Your fear of a failed RAID controller is a bit much, too. I’ve had to deal with a single controller failure in 30 years of IT (and I’ve done warranty work for all of the major OEMs in corporate IT for most of those 30 years)

I mean, that’s already covered by testing. Women’s and men’s sports have different limits, USADA isn’t as dumb as you think.

Unless you’re just completely unaware that such an agency exists, then you just don’t understand how competitive sports actually work.

mark3748 ,

Agreed. I’m just looking at the machines that were purchased at the launch of Win 11, but might not have had the proper hardware to transition off 10.

Windows 11 launched in 2021. The bare minimum hardware (8th gen intel) is from 2017. If you were buying 5+ year old hardware in 2021 then that’s on you.

mark3748 ,

The TPM is a hardware feature of every processor that’s supported. I really don’t understand all of this bullshit, the requirements are basically “don’t run this on ancient hardware.” That’s it.

mark3748 ,

The module is only needed for older systems.

Not needed at all. If you’re installing it on an older system, you’re already bypassing the requirements so why bother with a TPM?

mark3748 ,

There is no judgement in a settlement, and settlements are not case-law. The court has little to do with the settlement as it is simply a binding agreement between the parties to resolve the dispute outside of the court. The judge must also agree and sign off but the settlement is only binding to the parties to the suit and does not create any precedent.

If Nintendo wishes to go after anyone else, it will require an entirely new suit. A quick google on the differences between judgements, verdicts, and settlements will explain a lot better.

mark3748 ,

Your first link is the same case as the OP. It just keeps getting bigger and more complex.

Yeah, only four times this week. Rolling distro life.

UniFi and Edge are different product lines. UniFi uses a controller (local or cloud-based) and edge products are the more traditional interface on the device itself.

The article clearly states that edgerouter is the affected product, which means the default password and remote admin interface were the attack vectors.

mark3748 ,

They generally don’t scream to “go back to your own country” when that happens.

mark3748 ,

I can tell you’ve never been in a Chick-Fil-A kitchen during lunch rush. That drive through is one of the most efficient in the industry and the BoH logistics are about as good as you can get. Most restaurants do over 200 cars per hour. They have significantly more employees making a much better wage than the industry average allowing them to meet the demand.

I fucking hate Chick-Fil-A for a lot of reasons, but you can at least be factual about your criticisms. Pizza isn’t even in the same league as other fast food, and is basically irrelevant. Low margin and low volume lead to most pizza places not having enough staff to handle a rush of orders.

I have the advantage of having worked on the corporate side of a lot of different restaurants, so I have a lot of behind the scenes knowledge. I have nearly 20 years combined experience between Pizza Hut, Wendy’s, and now Chick-Fil-A. That’s probably why I don’t eat fast food anymore.

Newbie tech (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

This is probably a ridiculous question, but I usually stream from my laptop to my LG tv or my phone to any other tv, and I find that using my VPN keeps the casting output option from working. Quite literally the text of the Computer Fraud and Abuse act. Unauthorized access of computer systems can get you 20-years at club fed. Seems like some of these people need a history lesson.

mark3748 ,

These are separate issues and it’s a very complex set of issues. Reverse engineering is generally “okay” as long as you aren’t directly copying code, because you’ll run afoul of copyright laws. That doesn’t grant them the rights to access anyone else’s computer systems without authorization.

Tools that can be used maliciously are generally allowed because they have legitimate uses, using them to gain access or otherwise harm a computer system or network without authorization is criminal. You keep mentioning “suing” but this is not a civil issue, violating the CFAA is a crime.

Aaron Swartz got supremely fucked for writing a script that downloaded files he legally could access but technically was unauthorized because he accessed them in a way the corporation didn’t like.

mark3748 ,

If you’re talking about the Springs, the whole county has banned recreational. Manitou is able to have them because it’s a home-rule city.

mark3748 ,

Yeah, there are medical dispensaries on every corner it seems. It’s not nearly as conservative as generally portrayed, it’s just that the only people that vote in local elections are the focus on the family crowd so we end up with shit.

mark3748 , (edited )

Yeah, except no. Again, most Colorado municipalities are home-rule.

Edit: I like how I linked directly to the county showing that El Paso county does not allow recreational cannabis retailers, including the ordinance banning retail (13-01) and still got downvoted.

mark3748 ,

Yeah, you join a general instance, get everything set up the way you want it, get comfortable using it for a couple of months, then it goes down. You track down the instance admins Mastodon account to see if there is an update. There is a single post saying “I’m aware this is down and I’m working on it.” You check several days later, no updates on your lemmy instance but several hundred cat photos each day and announcements about how “Mastodon was successfully updated!” Months go by, you think to yourself “maybe I should just go back to Reddit.” More cat toots, more info on the Mastodon instance, no lemmy news.

So after waiting for months, you decide to pick another instance. All of your old content is gone forever, so you try to rebuild. You start adding your communities back only to find out the admin has decided to defederate from the instances several of those communities are on for whatever reasons there may be. Your choices are to find another instance or find new communities hosted somewhere that you can access. You give up and just read whatever’s on the feed. You play with the sorting options and find out they all kinda suck because you’re using lemmy wrong, but find some good content and some people you’re happy to interact with. You get past the five to ten posts with any sort of engagement, it’s just bot spam with no engagement whatsoever and porn.

mark3748 ,

Yeah, because geddit.social and lemmyloves.art are super controversial. Meanwhile I’m on sh.it just.works and can’t interact with anything on beehaw and several others.

You’re absolutely correct though, everyone should join lemmy.world, because federation means “consolidating everything to a single instance.”

I am full-on 100% in the fediverse. Hand waving and dismissing any and all problems is not productive in any way. Everyone should be joining whatever instance they want and be able access anything that is available, unfortunately in its current state that isn’t really possible. Telling people it is and then completely dismissing my personal experience attempting to do that exact thing, while simultaneously making a strawman ad hominem attack will surely convince people that this is a warm, welcoming place.

mark3748 ,

Looks like failing storage. You may be able to initiate a SMART self-test from the BIOS, or you can use the manufacturers tools. Seatools works on non-seagate drives and has a live USB option.

Do the short test first, if it passes, do the long one to confirm. Short test takes about 15 minutes usually, the long one can take a couple of hours.

mark3748 ,

They switched distros and still had issues. That and the general slowdown with high disk usage is a classic sign of failing drives.

Chasing hardware issues by playing with software only wastes time, so ruling out the hardware first is a good idea

Can anyone explain "Good Burger 2" to me? why does anyone want to watch this?

Background for myself, I was a viewer when Good Burger was a sketch on “All That,” a children’s sketch comedy show on Nickelodeon in the 90’s. It was basically Saturday night live for kids. They had this heavyset girl who sarcastically read the news like Chevy Chase and shit. It was pretty edgy for nine-year-olds. Good...

That’s interesting, I remember reading a post to comp.os.minix about 32 years ago about a Finnish student who made his own OS. It was just a kernel that barely worked. Wish I’d known it was already dominant in the server space for over 8 years, could have gotten a head start!

Texas defendant challenging federal gun law at the Supreme Court says he doesn’t want firearms anymore (www.cnn.com)

mark3748 ,

There are other, primary sources, that back up this interpretation. The Federalist Papers is a good starting point.

I don’t know the real answer, but it seems that defining a collective right as the second in a list of nine other individual rights doesn’t seem logical. I, personally, believe the individual right is what was intended. I also believe that over 200 years have passed and it needs to be updated. Arguing the semantics isn’t going to help anyone and simply attempting to re-interpret what’s supposed to be a living document is absurd. That being said, it would take a lot more people being a lot more rational to ever have a hope of making those changes.

mark3748 ,

Let me get this straight, you don’t believe that the words mean something and claim we can’t know their intent, then when offered additional context provided by some of the people who wrote the words you disagree with you dismiss it out of hand?

What would be a proper source to you then? Or do you prefer to revel in willful ignorance? Because that sounds like a pretty conservative view to me.

mark3748 ,

I was not arguing one way or the other, I was providing historical context. You’re arguing against points I never made. I’m glad you disagree with the writers of the federalist papers, but that is irrelevant.

I do agree with Thomas Jefferson on the need for a separation of church and state. You seem to have read me entirely incorrectly and made some weird assumptions.

mark3748 ,

It was firmware-level, and installed itself. Reinstalling the OS was not a solution.

Antihistamine drugs are all sleep medications. The non-drowsy versions just don’t cross the blood-brain barrier and cause less drowsiness.

The problem with using antihistamines as sleep meds is that you build a tolerance fairly quickly, so they work well for occasional use but not in the long-term.

mark3748 ,

NextDNS is also a DNS server. It is a much more robust service but it is not self-hosted.

I use it because it’s insanely easy to use and isn’t limited to my own network. For internal DNS I use PowerDNS with NextDNS upstream. Since I have 6 users and 4 servers (3 of which are VM hosts) I pay for it, but most home users would never need to.

Check it out, NextDNS.io
