1984 , to linux in Would being a Linux "power user" increase my chances of getting a job in IT/tech?
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Depends what you mean with a job in tech. If you want to work as technical problem solver or programmer, then it’s very useful, almost required.

Loduz_247 , to showerthoughts in Upvotes on memes function like modern day laugh tracks

So in the future those upvotes will have deceased people.

Mr_Fish , to asklemmy in How does labour strike against AI is supposed to protect them?

I’m sure they will, until they realize why it’s a good idea to keep the humans.

wargreymon , to linux in Would being a Linux "power user" increase my chances of getting a job in IT/tech?

absolutely… you know servers are mostly linux right?

Pheral , to nostupidquestions in Would I get banned here for being over active? I got banned from reddit because they thought I was a bot. And don't want to repeat the same mistake here. Thank you ahead of time.

I’m happy you’re here. I’m new-ish to Lemmy too, but I’m pretty timid about posting. There are a handful of users I see posting regularly and they’re absolute pillars of the community. So I say go ham! If anyone gets tired of your awesome antics, they can just mute you.

John_McMurray , to nostupidquestions in if the total fertility rate drops and stays below global replacement rate, will humans disappear?

Ok so there is stupid questions. No. Next.

VeganicTankie , to asklemmy in What would you like to change about Lemmy culture?

Reddit is too US-centric and male-dominated. Lemmy must change that

Definitely! Need more diversity on all aspects

DadVolante , to asklemmy in Men in their 40s, what’s one piece of advice for men in their 20s?
@DadVolante@sh.itjust.works avatar

Travel. Try new things. Eat food you’ve never tried before.

Get into the habit of reading. Actual books, not just things like lemmy.

Realize that literally every person you meet is a walking story, just like yourself

Brush your fuckin teeth.

Also: Floss. Seriously. Take care of your damn teeth. They’re important.

considine ,

Don’t eat between meals to re-establish your saliva microbiome and pH. This will do a lot for prevention of carie growth.

all-knight-party ,
@all-knight-party@kbin.run avatar

Also don't brush your gums too hard, I did that a bit when I didn't know better, and my gums receded slightly. Turns out those things don't come back. Make sure you brush that area though!

lichtmetzger ,

Take care of your damn teeth. They’re important.

I’m 34 and I already lost half of my teeth. By 40 they’ll probably all be gone. It’s definitely genetics, but also very much the lazyness in my youth that caused this.

If someone in their twenties reads this: Brush your fucking teeth, seriously. I had a phase in my life where I was living with constant pain for almost a year and almost went insane. Nobody should have to live like this.

Mr_Fish , to asklemmy in How can we believe and trust censored Bibles?

Don’t fully trust the translations. There are some that are pretty good, but none are exactly perfect. You can get the original language and wording (or the closest we have) with a quick Google, so use that if you ever think the translation is borderline.

NeoNachtwaechter , to linux in Would being a Linux "power user" increase my chances of getting a job in IT/tech?

the point that I could be considered a so-called “power user.”

There is no certain point. Power user is a rather vague description. It still includes “user” as opposed to admin or developer or guru etc.

If vague is good enough in your area, go for it. Otherwise look for a more formal qualification.

Good luck.

JIMMERZ , to asklemmy in What is a product you would never recommend?

Any Google smartwatch. I bought 2 at one point. A sport and a dress watch. Both only lasted about a year before the software rendered them useless. I’m now back on analogue watches.

SkaveRat ,

I absolutely loved my LG Android watch from a couple years ago. Used it constantly

But then a major update for Android Wear was released, and it completely changed the UX and UI. It was absolutely annoying to use suddenly

Stopped using it a week after the release. Never had an android wear watch since

Angry_Autist ,

Your experience is so common that I don’t understand why manufacturers keep doing it. Sure I get people want updates, but major UI changes should be optional.

Angry_Autist ,

It’s almost aggressive how quickly smart devices get shuttered, being an oldschool techhead I’ve always dreamed of being a walking compute center, but just like smart house gear, you can’t expect a thing you buy today to work next week and we are just conditioned to accept it.

tiredofsametab ,

I have a pixel watch I bought around its launch (IIRC) and it's still going fine today. The only issue I've had is, since starting farming, the little dial can gum up a bit, but it can be cleaned.

Next truenas version replaces kubernetes with docker compose - you could try a nightly to see if that works for you

golli , (edited )

openmediavault is ok for raid, but the containers aren’t one click wonder like in other NAS OSes

Since OMV also uses docker compose with a build in GUI to manage them, I don’t assume this would be what OP is looking for either? Unless trueNAS also comes with some repository of preconfigured compose files.

maniel OP , (edited )

TrueNAS has some built-in kinda appstore, OMV on the other hand docker compose isn’t that straightforward, first you need to add some unofficial repo, then install docker compose, then configure it

golli ,

Right, totally forgot about that step.

cheddar , to selfhosted in Why do so many people use NGINX?
@cheddar@programming.dev avatar

Why not? Why should I use Apache instead of Nginx? I don’t know about Caddy, Nginx is simple enough not to care about simpler solutions. But in general, I know Nginx and it does the job.

randint , to linux in What is something you want to use, yet are NOT using?
@randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

I want to learn stenography, but haven’t really got to buying a keyboard designed for it. I also want to host an EteSync server, but the HTTPS thing has been a bit of a headache for me and I’ve mostly just left it sitting there.

lemmyvore ,

There are alternatives if you want to host your calendar and contacts and sync them securely. You could use Radicale and put a reverse proxy in front of it (Nginx Proxy Manager makes it easy to set up and easy to get and renew certificates).

randint ,
@randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

Thanks! I might use that, since I do already have Nginx Proxy Manager set up.
