i wish people would stop complaining about leftists and linux discussion in general. i guess it makes me a hypocrite complaining about complainers but still it’s annoying.

also imo lemmy is basically reddit now (with the way .world is), with all its pros and cons. you cannot replicate something’s mechanisms to the tee and expect federation to somehow transform it into this otherwordly experience.

one positive thing i can say about lemmy compared to others though is that the small amount of content forces me to spend less time, and there are less reactionaries here than other places.

istanbullu , to linux in Would being a Linux "power user" increase my chances of getting a job in IT/tech?

yes

pimeys , (edited )

Exactly this. Having an interest and a hobby to an open source system will make you better in your job and a much more interesting candidate to hire.

Source: started with linux in 1995 as a kid. Never having issues finding great jobs.

Edit: I did not mean being a devops here, but finding an interest in open source software and learning a highly lucrative programming language while going. You can get pretty far with Rust or Go in the modern startups, C or Java in enterprises. Being very good with Linux drives this interest.

bmarinov , to selfhosted in Why do so many people use NGINX?

I use Traefik because it solved a problem with the static configuration approach which Nginx had / still has.

In a scenario with multiple services behind Nginx, taking one down or replacing an instance is massive headache. I tried to script around it, but basically the Nginx container would choke on the fact that a service does not [yet / anymore] exist, and together with the docker networking stack it turned out to be an insurmountable problem.

Traefik otoh discovers services based on (in my case) labels on the docker containers running locally. And then updates the configuration on the fly.

Basically the static approach to configuration resulted in massive headache when I needed to enable zero downtime deployments and updates behind Nginx. And Traefik handled it perfectly without dropping a single request.

Nowadays I manage my dynamic configuration with ansible and update the values in for the file-based configuration provider with a playbook. I don’t need a UI to manage my inventory, I use ansible for that. Traefik handles the rest perfectly.

loudwhisper ,

Completely agree, which is why I do the same.

Additional bonus: proxies that interact with the docker API directly (I think also caddy can do it) save you from exposing the services on any port at all (only in the docker network). So it’s way less likely to expose a port with a service by mistake and no need for arbitrary and unique localhost ports.

ruse8145 , to selfhosted in Why do so many people use NGINX?

Caddy certainly was the easier option but it’s as complex as nginx now and id argue it’s hard to to use.

tmpod ,
@tmpod@lemmy.pt avatar

Why do you say that?

I’ve used both plenty and only once I thought Caddy was harder: caching. It requires you to install a plugin that also doesn’t have the easiest of configs. I think there’s a new and simpler one nowadays, but haven’t tried it yet.

I now use Caddy by default for everything new I make/host.

Creat , to linux in Would being a Linux "power user" increase my chances of getting a job in IT/tech?

It highly depends on the job. Some companies run fully on Windows, no exceptions. There it obviously would not help. But many still either host various services on Linux, or buy hosting/cloud commuting that is Linux based. There it might even be necessary.

It also depends on what you mean by “power user”. I would generally advise you to look into the server side of things. In my work, there are zero Linux machines that have a GUI of any kind installed. t The 50 or so Linux machines are all administered through SSH and Shell.

This! Also if you company only employs windows machines … run.

The music industry is garbage, pure garbage. Sony and Universal execs have a special place in hell.

Modern labels have shamelessly sampled music from other culture, without understanding the significance, and that’s truly pathetic.

One such song I came across was from Travis Scott (I think?), which was sampled from a song made by Bhakti reformists, who, way before the era of colonialism in India, spoke against brahmanism, casteism, elitism and women’s right, in the 7-8th century in India. And the lyrics? Totally the opposite of what’s in the sample - objectifying women like replaceable toys.

They also did the same to the Italian anti-fascist song “Bella Ciao”. Now it’s a stupid pop song, and people think that this is some random, catchy stuff that is played in the carnival.

0stre4m ,

Yes, the music industry is predatory as shit. Most of the “stars”, unless they negotiate their contracts the right way and become actual legends, end up in debt or suicided.

Cube6392 ,

I’ve been thinking lately about the industrialization of music. Used to be before the gramophone you’d play music in your house. Sometimes you’d be bad. And everyone was fine with it. We just did it to enjoy it. Sometimes you and your neighbors would go to that one barn everyone was gathering in where the best musicians in town would play. They were your neighbors and friends. But now we don’t know our musicians. We don’t make music. We just consume it. I think we need to reclaim music. I think everyone should download DAWs and just… Fucking… Suck. And share their suck with friends and family. What you produce doesn’t have to be polished, or good, it just needs to be tour own.

yuri ,

I buy random instruments at thrift stores and I would HIGHLY recommend folks try it out. Pick up a shitty First Act guitar, or some bongos that were originally sold as a souvenir, or even just a cheapo plastic recorder. Just having a musical instrument or two around the house is a special thing, especially if it’s a cheap one you would let any random guest fuck around with.

I met this guy when I was a teenager and I’ll never forget the first time I saw his house. His living room was full of instruments. 8 and 12 string guitars, pan flutes, cedar flutes, loads of little percussion things, and the drums… That’s how I learned I’m a percussion guy!

He only “knew how” to play a few things, but he would noodle on anything. They were all there primarily for guests, and moreso for the ones who had never even played an instrument before.

Music is absolutely one of those things you can just fuck around with to have fun, and then accidentally end up being really good at.

Bezier ,

I dont know much about 90s music😅, could you please share some of those lyricists and singers (or suggest any of their songs)? I’m interested in listening to some of their songs :)

Kinda sad that I wasn’t much aware of this issue…

taanegl ,

…I can’t. You can find them on various features, with among others De La Soul, but the point is they left. You’d have to amass the amount of hip-hop music that I have and draw a timeline where you can see them being phased out.

It’s around the time LL Cool J turned into a sex symbol and when De La had to “add some badass to perlong their life over the drum.”

One of these days I want to do the whole research route, but just so I can juxtapose it to country - which also suffered the same fate, only a half a century earlier.

Capitalism is a slow crawl to mediocrity and exploitation. No culture can really survive it.

BlastboomStrice ,
@BlastboomStrice@mander.xyz avatar

Aw, thank you for your help

within_epsilon ,

I agree with the music industry problems. Luckily I have found some great hip hop and country recently.

taanegl ,

The sad thing? Country used to be rebellious… I mean actually rebellious, none of this Trojan horse nationalism and fascism disguised as “traditionalism”.

We’re talking Johnny Paycheck, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and the queen her self, Dolly Parton.

But, as of late, I’ve said this:

Shout outs to the women of country, for bringing back the tradition - of writing songs about shooting your spouse in the face.

Keep the dream alive.

within_epsilon ,

Woody Gutherie, Utah Phillips… I guess I am asking what divides county from folk.

taanegl ,

When it comes to hip-hop? There was an enlightenment period where my heart still lies, before the stigma of being a “conscious rapper”, “underground” - or even “backpacker”.

I call this record industry psy-ops, because the music media tried to use it against anyone that didn’t fit the bill. How do I know that?

THEY TRIED TO CALL JAY DILLA A BACKPACKER

Philistines, troglodytes, absolute cretins, scum of the earth. Dear god I hate the record industry.

Incidentally, if you want to go back into the past, I can recommend Quannum Records, the indie label of Blackalicious, Lifesavas, Latyrix and Lyrics Born.

Other than that, Def Jux, Rhymesayers (the mixtapes, get the friggin mixtapes), Stones Throw - ofc. Back when you needed an indie label.

Today we can happily say that bedroom productions will be the saving grace, mostly because it is seperate from the industry, so we do get a lot of great music.

But it also proves the industry is a homogeneous bottleneck.

within_epsilon ,

I have a lot to learn. I appreciate the insight. I listen to Aesop Rock. I remember his work being with Rhymesayers.

southsamurai , to nostupidquestions in Is there anyone who can help me mod and style a community? Or do I need to do it on my own?
@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

Welll, you’re kinda barking up the wrong tree in this C/ to begin with.

But, your question, while not actually stupid, is also not the right question without a lot Mir more info.

Style wise? There’s no real styling on lemmy. You make a banner, and you’re done, pretty much. If you can’t cobble together a banner between gimp and/or canva, you really aren’t ready to learn anything that would help you make a great banner. There’s a certain ground floor when it comes to designing something really nice, and if you can’t use the most basic tools, you’re essentially asking someone else to do it for you. Not that you’ll never find someone, but it’s a big ask.

As far as modding goes, you shouldn’t learn that from one person, ever. Yeah, it can be nice to have someone to ask about the tools available on lemmy, but you don’t need a teacher for that, just head to whatever the lemmy help page is and go ham.

If you’re wanting a co-mod or mods, isn’t !modrequest a thing? Or am I misremembering the name? Anyway, if I’ve got the name wrong, there’s a place to request mods to help out somewhere, and if you can’t find it on your own, you aren’t ready to run a community on lemmy anyway.

But, before you go asking for mods, you’ll want to be able to explain what the C/ is going to be, what rules you intend, and what policy/ies are going to be in place for moderation. Nobody is going to volunteer blind. Well, nobody worth having most likely.

zephr_c , to linux in Updating BIOS via Linux ?

All the security updates are in the microcode loaded by the bootloader even before the kernel is loaded, so unless there’s some new feature, bugfix, or hardware support you specifically know you need it’s not important to update your BIOS anyway. Which is good, because as far as I can tell you’re just screwed by a bad hardware vendor.

gpstarman OP ,
