Dandroid , to nostupidquestions in Is it normal to start reading a book but then suddenly realize that you have no idea what's going on in the plot because you have been reading the words but ignoring their meaning?

It’s not even just books for me. I can watch a movie a second time it’s like watching a whole new movie. Like I completely missed half the plot and most of the details. I can also watch 100 episodes of a TV show and realize that I don’t know the main character’s best friend’s name (the best friends who had 30 focus episodes and appeared in 86 of the 100 episodes).

bbtai ,

It’s not even just books and movies for me. Sometimes I’d be talking to someone in real life and I’d suddenly become distracted (a text message comes in, I’m reminded about an errand because of a word they said), and the words come in and they don’t make sense. Nowadays I’ve seemed to learned how to queue the words and process them after I get distracted lol.

clueless_stoner OP ,
@clueless_stoner@lemmy.world avatar

I can relate to this. Even while talking, sometimes I might forget what I was saying right in the middle of a sentence, and then move my focus onto completely different stuff. I find that eating well and being active somewhat helps though.

axo10tl , to retrogaming in Paralyzed by choice, which handheld to best game on?

IMO Steam Deck is the best overall option, as it’s beefy enough to run PS3 or even Switch games.

If it’s too heavy, the Retroid Pocket 3+ is a decent emulation competitor with a lighter, smaller form factor.

I find myself constantly switching between them all and can’t settle down to actually play a game.

This sounds like one of those problems where buying more hardware doesn’t help. Ruminating about the “best” handheld choice is an easy way to forget about playing the games themselves. I’ve been there. The solution is to just pick a device at random, and go outside to play it. There will be pros and cons, but if you’re not even getting to the point where you can actually play the game, then the pros and cons don’t matter either.

theusualuser ,

Yep, steamdeck here, and once it’s fully set up it’s a great machine for emulation. I honestly don’t notice that it’s too heavy. Just re-adjust how you’re sitting or laying down or whatever I guess? Maybe put a pillow on your lap to give your arms some support? Not sure what the answer is there, but steamdeck is a great route to go.

angrylittlekitty , to selfhosted in What hardware are you using for your self-hosted lemmy instance?

shower thoughts… and still on my first cup of coffee to more just musing than anything …

if storage is the concern wonder if the lemmy roadmap might one day include an option to use cloud based storage?

azure storage at .06/gb per month is likely cheaper and more redundant than local storage - even if you factor in calls to the blob which could be lowered via caching.

cloud storage potentially might one day lead to a option for smaller self hosters to opt into a shared blob instance where the and cost is shared.

in this scenario security to ensure the cloud blob couldn’t be deleted would need to be thought through (maybe splitting the password among multiple admins with each having one part of the whole?) but might be one way to better encourage more self hosting for them compute side of things.

Senseibu ,
@Senseibu@feddit.uk avatar

If I self hosted my own Lemmy on my home server, just for myself and I posted / uploaded images on it, when another user from another instance views my image, they cache it, would this mean later down the line if I deleted to free up server space, if someone else on that instance was to come across my image after deletion, because it was previously cached, the image would still show?

Wondering if rolling storage is possible eventually, where an archive of posts older than 2 years is performed and data deleted.

UselesslyBrisk , to selfhosted in [Question] Does anyone run their own email server?

I stopped running my own a while ago. Its no longer really decentralized and the big players (google/microsoft) will often just blacklist you for little reason.

That said I DO maintain my own domain and backups. So i can take my email to whatever hosting provider I want.

I also noticed, during the migration, that if you simply register your domain with one of the big players (ie: Google Workspace or M365) you will often get whitelisted and email will flow easier. This was easier when they had a free tier though.

SmugBedBug ,

Got the same issue. Everything was setup properly. SPF, dkim, dmarc was all good. Server IP wasn’t in any blocklists. But my messages would still fall in spam with Gmail.

Ended up setting sendgrid as a relay and all is good now.

Chainweasel , to reddit in Is there any feedback of the current blackout? Feels like everything will be over soon and it's going on like before.

Feels like everything will be over soon and it’s going on like before.

This is why scheduling it ahead of time to last for 48 hours was a monumentally stupid idea.
If workers form a union and they go on a strike, and they told the boss they’re striking for 2 days, The boss can just wait it out and get back to whatever they were doing before after the strike.
This is essentially a content creators strike from Reddit, telling the admins that everything will be back to normal in 2 days gives them the opportunity to wait it out without having to cave to any of the demands.
I really enjoyed this community so far and watching it grow immensely over the past 24 hours or so, and it kind of feels depressing that most of the people are just going to leave and go back to Reddit tomorrow.

Aardonyx ,
@Aardonyx@lemmy.one avatar

Maybe I am being pessimistic, but asking volunteer reddit mods to drop tools for more than 48h during such an interesting time for the platform is feeling about as realistic as asking your alcoholic uncle to stay sober at a wedding reception with an open bar. Can they really stay away?

markipol ,

I think another major miscalculation is there was no alternatives agreed on by consensus. For example, if they had said to everyone “go to Lemmy”, “go to discord” etc. Now there’s no alternative to a lot of subreddits, people will just wait it out and go back to the subreddits when they go back, or if they’re indefinitely suspended they’ll just make new subreddits.

hodgepodgehomonculus ,
@hodgepodgehomonculus@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I second this, and it has been bugging me since people started talking about the blackout. I think the big issue is that the people organizing the 48hr blackout are the mods. These are the people that have invested the most into reddit, and they dont want to give up that investment into their subreddits. They don’t want to leave reddit, and giving people an agreed upon alternative would be permanently fracturing their little fiefdom. They want to make a statement, and then for things to go back to the way they were, hoping that their tiny act of defiance makes a difference. The migration has to be led by users, but the issue of fractured lemmy communities is going to be hard to navigate unless lemmy introduces a way for communities to link together.

pinwurm ,
@pinwurm@lemmy.ml avatar

They’ll be back here again in 2-ish weeks when Apollo and RIF are done.

And when mlem and other apps start rolling out for Lemmy, we’ll start seeing shifts. Apps that have proper accessibility, a clean UI, lack advertising and don’t eat data. And they give you the same Reddit experience without Reddit’s predatory business strategy.

When the blackouts stop, a lot of users will be able to search for Reddit alternatives and will find Lemmy… through Reddit.

I mod a sub with 65K users or so, I plan to go dark indefinitely. Also considering Read-Only with a sticky redirecting here. I know I’m not the only mod.

The Digg > Reddit migration wasn’t overnight. It was fast, though.

fcuks , to reddit in Is there any feedback of the current blackout? Feels like everything will be over soon and it's going on like before.

I feel reddit corp still dgaf and when the majority of subreddits are back then the blackouts will be but a memory…

For me personally - I gaf, so I deleted my 12YO reddit account, wiped my comments and now going to be a lemmy & mastodon main.

I think that the fediverse will continue to grow nicely, especially as existing reddit apps start to point to lemmy as a backend. Also places like tildes.net will grow nicely too with things like the fact the reddit is fun app dev has stated he’s building an app for it.

They’ll no doubt survive, but Reddit really fucked their monopoly with how this was handled.

Ok… After changing some settings, I got this log:

2023-06-13T15:16:56.808411Z ERROR HTTP request{http.method=GET http.scheme="http" http.host=lemmy.pathoris.de http.target=/api/v3/ws otel.kind="server" request_id=6603f30f-4523-4548-a82c-f38c22d1889f http.status_code=101 otel.status_code="OK"}: lemmy_server::api_routes_websocket: only_mods_can_post_in_community: only_mods_can_post_in_community

That explains a lot, I think :-)

Apparently my instance does try to push, as I expected, but the community is protected on lemmy.world. That’s a bit surprising still, since I thought it is a test group to test federation and such, but since that wasn’t specified anywhere, it’s fair enough that this could be a test-group by lemmy.world for lemmy.world :-)

twitterfluechtling OP ,

Btw: The settings I changed on my server were removing all servers from the “allowed” list. It seems I misunderstood the instructions during setup, I thought I had to add some servers quasi as a seed. But actually, by giving permission to certain servers, it is implied that I don’t want to allow any other.
