I have been using TTV LOL PRO v1 with my own Russia proxy (I pay for it). You can use my proxy if you want: twitch.nadeko.netand I THINK you will get a few ads using the proxy on the webpage (github.com/younesaassila/ttv-lol-pro/…/37#discuss…) . I use Streamlink+MPV to watch twitch streams and I don’t get any ads

Tailgating. It’s gonna kill you eventually so let’s streamline the process.

Also fuck you, especially when I’m in a god damned exit lane.

Zahille7 ,

So you would standardize tailgating so that everyone has to do it?

That seems like the opposite of what he wrote.

I want to use COSMIC but its design sucks, I prefer KDE (and on the Rust side: slint).

I want to use GNOME as what it does works great, but it lacks a whole list of features I use.

I want to use Haruna or many other KDE apps, but GNOME/GTK apps are often better and I dont care.

I want to use Gapless as it is the only music player on Linux that seems to not suck? But it lacks many features.

Agreed. But I’m SO tired of trying to find and configure a good tiling WM that has rounded corners and isn’t impossible to install or created by assholes (it also helps that nice QoL features like easy kb layout switching are included ootb).

Qtile, when scenefx support happens (which will happen when scenefx releases v1.0 aka anytime between this year and the next decade by the looks of things), will be perfect for me but until then, I’m torn between Qtile, Hyprland and COSMIC.

gramgan OP ,

As far as rounded corners and easy to use, I’ve had a tremendous time with swayfx for the past few months, which I switched to from Hyprland.

aubeynarf , to nostupidquestions in if the total fertility rate drops and stays below global replacement rate, will humans disappear?

We are currently overtaxing natural resources, human population cannot grow unbounded without many unpleasant consequences. To me, it’s not a problem if we reach a steady state or even start a slow downward trend.

But, we must turn away from “line goes up” methods for measuring success, which are pretty deeply ingrained in most of our economies.

Tywele , to linux in What is something you want to use, yet are NOT using?

I want to use Neovim but I haven’t gotten around to really learning it yet.

cizra ,

NeoVim is almost a drop-in replacement for Vim (the configuration file is under .config). Plugin installation might be different, tho.

Find a migration guide and be brave.

iiGxC ,

I used neovim but recently switched to helix and highly recommend it. If you haven’t tried nvim yet, give helix a try before deciding. A good way to compare is do the tutorial of each and see which you like more nvim +Tutor and hx --tutor (orhelix --tutor).

If you’re a current vim user the helix keybindings are only a small learning curve after the tutorial, and feel a lot smoother imo

narc0tic_bird ,

I love Helix. I like that it pretty much works out of the box and the only thing you have to do is install language servers and in some cases configure them, but that’s (mostly) well documented. No need to install plugins or use a preset “distribution” like with NeoVim. I also like the built-in keyboard shortcut hints, for example when you press g (goto) it shows you what key will do what.

The way Helix does “select first, then act” is subjective, but I like it.

iiGxC ,

Agree on all counts. I didn’t like finding and comparing plugins for neovim, and then wrestling with environment stuff to get them to work, and having to change a bunch of options to get nvim to work how I want. With helix, my config of things I’ve changed from default is very small, and there’s no wrestling with plugins.

And yeah, “select then act” feels a lot smoother and more intuitive to me. If you like that and like plugins tho, check out kakuone

jbrains ,

This is the reason I liked kakoune right away after I started using it: select, then act, and every movement is also a selection.

Sunny ,

Could you elaborate on what helix is?

iiGxC ,

A keyboard and terminal based text editor, similar in some ways to neovim, vim, and vi

jimitsoni18 ,

I’ve used helix for a few months and liked a few default keybindings. Didn’t like the reversed sequences (movement then action) so switched back to neovim and configured helix like bindings for some actions.

russjr08 ,

I tried out Helix, but I think the biggest issue that I have is that with (neo)vim, I can use the keybindings in most of the editors I use through a plugin (such as IdeaVim for the JetBrains suite) - but I do not think the concept of Helix keybinding plugins have really hit anywhere.

Helix itself seemed really cool when I was playing around with the tutor mode though.

iiGxC ,

Yeah I only really use it for personal stuff for that reason. There’s a vscode plugin, but last time I tried it it was really slow

dinckelman ,

The learning curve is absolutely colossal, especially if you want to use it as a full IDE. Even with the legend panel it still doesn’t tell you have the story

morbidcactus ,

That’s me as well, I’ve used vim for simple edits over the years but more and more just used nano for most of my terminal based edits. Finally ran vimtutor (mainly because I wasn’t aware of it) and wow, I should have done that years ago.

iiGxC , to nostupidquestions in if the total fertility rate drops and stays below global replacement rate, will humans disappear?

The replacement rate isn’t static. It depends on both how many people exist and how many people are having babies and how many babies they’re having. If the total number of babies per year stays constant, then whether it’s below or above the replacement rate depends on the size of the population. So for a hyper simplified example, if 100 babies are born per yer, that’s below replacement for a population of 110, but above replacement for a population of 90, but overall the population size will trend towards 100. Obviously real life is way more complicated, but even if the birth rate is low now, it’s far more likely we’re just moving towards a different population size, not a population of zero

notsofunnycomment OP ,
@notsofunnycomment@mander.xyz avatar

Expressed as “the average number of babies that an individual woman needs to have for a certain population to stay the same size”, the replacement rate should not depend on population size, right?

If you express it as an absolute number (e.g. number of babies per year) than obviously it will depend on population size.

From what I understand, the replacement rate (expressed as the average number of babies that an individual woman needs to have for a certain population to stay the same size), depends mostly on what percentage of people die before they (can) have babies.

pr06lefs , to linux in What is something you want to use, yet are NOT using?

I kind of want to try wayland just to be modern, but I’m pretty happy with xmonad and don’t want to learn another window manager.

cizra ,

I migrated from XMonad to Sway, it checks all my requirements. I don’t miss the Turing-complete configurability.

communism ,
@communism@lemmy.ml avatar

You might want to look into River, a tiling Wayland compositor inspired by xmonad. Disclaimer, I’ve not actually used xmonad before so I’m not in a position to compare the two. But River is configured entirely through riverctl commands. Its “config” is an executable, by default at $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/river/init but you can point it to a different path, which can technically be any executable file that just executes when River starts. Ordinarily it’d be a shell script calling all the riverctl commands you want to get your River set up the way you like it, but it could be any executable you like really. You can also use other languages other than shell scripting.

It’s still in pretty early development, but I daily drive it for my main general-purpose machine and it works completely fine. I use it for web browsing, coding, gaming, chatting, general productivity, etc, all works. I’ve noticed some minor hiccups but nothing breaking or unusable. Tbh I would say it’s more stable than Hyprland which I’ve also used and have noticed that Hyprland updates (especially from git) would frequently break it, whereas I was running River compiled from the latest commit of master branch for a while and never had an update break things.

I would outlaw starting work before 12pm. I’m 30 and I still absolutely hate mornings just as much as I did when I was 10. I’m naturally a night person but working graveyards has more problems than dealing with early mornings IMO. Let all the morning people feel the pain of having to be productive during your least productive hours for a change.

Vaggumon , to asklemmy in How do you feel about shopping in stores?
@Vaggumon@lemm.ee avatar

I have a somewhat skewed perspective on this. I get the hate for large corporate stores like Walmart and Amazon, but as someone who can’t drive due to being legally blind, both companies have given me a level of independence I’ve never had before. Before grocery delivery became widespread due to Walmart+, I had to take a cab to and from the store (extra $30 each way plus tips). I remember reaching out to a locally owned grocery store 20 years ago and asked if they would be willing to deliver weekly groceries for a monthly fee. I was told in no uncertain terms to go fuck myself, they literally laughed at me. Times change though, and now I can get everything I want or need for a fraction what it used to cost even with inflation. I can also shop more confidently since I can see the products better and get more info about them online then in a store.

Ceph. I have some Raspberry Pi’s that I’m going to set up a cluster with. Just haven’t gotten around to it yet. I half expect the performance to be relatively terrible, but maybe it won’t and I can try to build something on top of the cluster in a sort of hyper converged setup.

It’s completely overkill for a small home lab but that’s what makes it fun.

sylver_dragon , to asklemmy in would you recommend to work 2 to 4 weekend days per month to earn a bit of extra money if you already have a full time position?

At the very minimum, I’d suggest waiting until you are actually working that 9-5 office job, before considering giving up your weekends. You may feel very different about things, once you are in that position.

My own situation is that I work generally 8-4 in a fully remote position. I like what I do and often spend my personal time reading and learning within the same field, just because I like that sort of thing. Even still, when the weekend starts, I have zero desire to go work somewhere else. I have a family I want to spend time with, hobbies I want to engage in, and just generally not be “on the clock”. There is a lot more to life than work, go do that.

That said, if money is an issue, I can certainly understand the desire to work more. My income is high enough that I don’t have to stress over money. So, the pressure to earn more just isn’t there. Any extra income would either just be used to pay stuff off faster or go into savings. If you are in a position where money is a significant stressor, then the extra work may make sense. Some extra time with your nose to the grindstone now could pay dividends in the future.

Overall, I’m in the camp of not spending all your free time working. Work to live, don’t live to work.

EnderMB , to asklemmy in What would you like to change about Lemmy culture?

Simply, stop being dicks to each other. Politically motivated or not, a lot of people are just straight up cunts when someone says something that they don’t disagree with.

I can forgive the political extremism, and being heavily biased towards Linux, but you don’t need to insult anyone that’s to the right of Bernie, or someone that uses Windows and is happy.

What do you mean by this? Lemmy doesn’t need to afford anything, it’s free and open source.

steeznson ,

Yeah the toxicity of the politics on here is pretty bad. I’ve read several comments in the UK politics sublemmy in recent weeks advocating for political violence.

Edit: this was a charming recent example leminal.space/comment/9489619

Angry_Autist ,

Uh, that reply isn’t advocating violence, it’s stating that they would be unsurprised if an abused trans person committed violence. There is a difference.

Cowbee ,
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

Saying that deliberately antagonizing a minority group will lead to a violent reaction that will be used as justification for far more crackdowns is not advocacy for violence.

This is essentially what has happend in Palestine.

steeznson ,

In the UK we have had 2 MPs assassinated in the past 10 years. One Labour and one Conservative. Comments that essentially say, “The government should do what I want or there will be more political violence”, are inciting violence.

The figleaf of being like “unless X happens, someone will do Y” is the same as 4chan maniacs threatening to commit acts of terror “in minecraft” or whatever.

Cowbee ,
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

What an interesting move, shifting the argument from “the government deliberately antagonizing and oppressing minority populations is bad and will see consequences if this continues” to “if the government doesn’t do what I want, there will be violence.”

You’re deliberately erasing the core of the argument to insert your own.

steeznson ,

You are being disingenuous here. I’m not shifting their argument. Here is their full comment with annotations -

Sooner or later, a trans woman forced through male puberty by arbitrary rules/culture-war politics will snap

Annotation 1: politicians making incorrect choices are going to force the hand of activists for this cause…

and attempt to assassinate the PM or health minister.

A2: which will inevitably lead to political violence against members of the government

Then the other boot will come down: the Daily Mail will demand a crackdown, and the usual voices in the Guardian will join in, and the government will follow.

A3: Then the media will blame the activists instead of themselves

In what world is that not advocating for political violence?

Let’s replace the issue in question and see if it still sounds ok to you:

Sooner or later, a white nationalist forced to experience mass imigration due to arbitrary rules/culture-war politics will snap and attempt to assassinate the PM or home secretary. Then the other boot will come down: the Guardian will demand a crackdown, and the usual voices in the Daily Mail will join in, and the government will follow.

Does the above sound acceptable?

Cowbee ,
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s simple, the government oppressing minorities will usually lead to said minority group lashing out.

This is what happened in Palestine.

This is not an argument for violence, but for government action to prevent violence by ceasing oppression of minority groups.

Simple.

steeznson ,

Your argument here is just saying, “Political violence is justified if a minority are being oppressed.”

Maybe you are tweaking it to be, “Political violence is to be expected if a minority are being oppressed.”

This is literally the dictionary definition of advocating for something.

Advocate, verb, to publically suggest an idea, development or way of doing something.

Cowbee ,
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

Your argument here is just saying, “Political violence is justified if a minority are being oppressed.”

I mean, I believe that, but that’s not my point. The point is that minority populations will strike back, regardless of advocacy.

Maybe you are tweaking it to be, “Political violence is to be expected if a minority are being oppressed.”

That’s literally the argument, though. You misunderstood it.

steeznson ,

The 2nd argument there, the one you claim to be making, is advocating for political violence.

I don’t think you’re debating in good faith here.

Cowbee ,
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

How is saying “people will eventually fight if oppressed hard enough” the same as saying “oppressed people should fight their oppressors?”

The first statement is analysis of cause and effect, the second is advocacy. You’re intentionally misframing it to spread a narrative.
