One network interface has just one IP address, but it can have a bunch of different programs listening and talking.
A server might have both a webserver and a mail server running on the same machine - and they don’t want each other’s network traffic.
So you mark each packet with a destination port number, to let the server work out which program you’re talking to.
Your web browser will mark all its packets with port 80 or port 443, and when the server gets those, it knows it’s web traffic, and passes it to the webserver software.
Your email client will mark all its packets with port 25 or 993, and when the server gets those, it knows it’s email traffic, and passes it to the mailserver software.
Typically each separate kind of network service will have its own well-known port number assigned to it.
There’s also a source port field on packets, so that your computer can get return traffic back to the right program running on your machine.
I got a OnePlus Nord. I think they are pushing too many phones. They do like Xiaomi, they announce a phone, it doesn’t even have time to arrive in the stores that a new one is already announced. This is confusing as they need to resort to ridiculous naming like “OnePlus Nord 2 ce lite se 5g”. Stores can’t hold 100 identical phones that are differing only in the name. The store where i bought my Nord, dropped OnePlus entirely because “we already carry Oppo, vivo, realme, it’s the same brand”
And this reflects also in the updates. They can’t possibly continue to send updates with this many phones.
I like to get a phone that gets at least 3 years of updates, but in total for the bbk group it means supporting and testing 400 phone models at the same time? They have thousands of employees but they’re not enough , what happens is that software development is basically dropped as soon the new model comes out
Why can’t they do like Apple??? Just three phones per year. Easier to market, easier to support…
Frankly, the decisions that we make are chemical reactions. The difference is in the complexity of the decisions that we can make. At that point, though, in order to answer your question, we would need to argue about what one would consider to be a decision that’s complex enough and a decision that’s not complex enough, and that leans much more into philosophy and ethics rather than science.
I can only tell you that, from a mechanistic point of view, there’s not really much distinguishing our decision making process from, say, the decision making of a flatworm
I'm typing this from a 6t. No complaints with it so far, it's far enough in that I need to replace the battery but that's to be expected. The 6gb of ram has proved to be really helpful in ensuring that things always work and the dual sim has let me combine the work and personal phones into one.
I know it's long in the tooth so if anyone has some recommendations for a replacement that has dual sim and doesn't cost an arm and a leg please reply!
I'm just kind of sick of Android in general, tbh. Google has killed off almost everything that made it fun to play with new Android versions, and somehow made it less intuitive/easy to use for advanced/experienced users in the constant pursuit of - ironically - ease of use. For example: why is it now a swipe and three taps to disable wifi in the Quick Settings panel, when previously it was a swipe and one tap?
One thing to consider: While tab water in most of the developed world is potable,any water safety guarantees usually end where the house water pipes begin. Depending on the state of the piping, tap water might not be safe, even if the water supplyer says it’s safe.
You can get a water test (especially bacteria is important) for relatively cheap. Last time I did such a test it was ~€60. It’s not wrong to do one.
Also, the definition of potable water is that the water is potable after the tap has been running for 10(!) minutes.
Bacteria contaminated pipes are pretty common and if the water has been sitting in these biofilm-covered pipes over night or even longer, the water can become pretty harmful. Especially after you get home from a vacation, letting the water run for a decent amount of time might be a good thing.
Also: the worst thing that can happen to your water pipe system are blind pipes, so pipes that are connected only on one end. That could be e.g. left-over plumbing after remodeling or pipes that lead to unused taps. If at all possible, these ahould be removed or flushed at best daily.
Side question: Why do Reddit and Twitter and all of these other social media shitshows use idiotic terminology like 'permanently suspended'? Surely the correct term is 'banned'. The word suspended in this context usually implies a temporary nature.
