Duckduckgo has a bang for Mastodon: !msocial. Maybe we should start putting in requests for Fediverse bangs: !lemmy, !kbin, !beehaw, etc.

It would be better if they would add !fediverse that searches all of the sites. Maybe one day!

Kichae ,

I assume msocial only searches mastodon.social?

readbeanicecream ,
@readbeanicecream@kbin.social avatar

looks like it. !msocial {{{string}} points to https://mastodon.social/tags/string. So, !msocial Cats searches https://mastodon.social/tags/Cats.

dumbcrumb ,

Being able to easily search the entire fediverse woule be amazing.

It’s concerning how there is no AED/CPR training in school considering everyone is likely to run into a situation where a family member will need resuscitation while waiting for an ambulance. Not knowing when and how to do cpr, how to use a defibrillator (portable ones give audio instructions) etc is so dangerous because by the time an ambulance gets there it may be too late. Also I wish AED were more readily available and easily located. May even be a good idea to pitch in with neighbors and make a locked box that’s easily accessible.

Aphridy ,

Here, in the Netherlands, we have a network of civilian first responders, with people that will be alarmed by the 112 (for you Americans: that’s the European version of 911) call center when a CPR request is near them. Also, we have a practical full cover over the country of AEDs. We have one against our front wall, accessible for everyone. In 1.5 years of time, I got two times a call that I was able to respond to, but our emergency services were already present when I arrived (by bike) on the location.

I've had better results searching through the instances themselves because Google doesn't always index the keywords on time. On caveat of this method is that if the instance doesn't have the syncing out the instance where the info is from being propagated, then this trick would not work

cucumacu , to youshouldknow in YSK: Installing a bidet attachment to your toilet is super easy and probably cleaner than using toilet paper.

I got a Tushy classic bidet a year ago. It is amazing! For anyone out there that uses more toilet paper than you think you should, gets a raw bum from wiping, or wants to get three times cleaner, a bidet is for you. I’m a dude, but also my wife loves it. Honestly, one of the best purchases per dollar I have ever made and one that reminds me daily.

If you got poop on your hands, what do you think will get you cleaner? Couple of wipes with toilet paper or rinsing in the sink with water.

Unfortunately there’s probably a large amount of users who simply don’t care.

But that’s okay. What matters is content creators, not content consumers. Anyone with half a gram of decency and self integrity will have realized that they need to take steps to move away from Reddit.

How exactly do they count addictions when someone has an ongoing prescription?

inquisitor1965 , to youshouldknow in YSK: Googling for terms on all lemmy domains

Pretty sure there shouldn’t be a space between the term “site:” and the domain

MxM111 , to youshouldknow in YSK: Googling for terms on all lemmy domains

readbeanicecream ,
@readbeanicecream@kbin.social avatar

probably. So you could add it as a site search string; such as: site:lemmy.* OR site:kbin.social -site:beehaw.org cats

Dick_Justice , to nostupidquestions in Why is there such a big thing about prescription opioids when the addiction rate in less than 1% for those who have been prescribed for pain?
@Dick_Justice@lemmy.world avatar

Because it’s low hanging fruit. Politicians can be “tough” on chronic pain patients and frame it as furthering the battle against the “opioid epidemic” without having to address the actual kraken in the bathtub, which is shady, Chinese bootleg fentanyl flooding the US through our leaky International mail system. The opioid crisis and epidemic of overdoses isn’t fueled by Grandma selling off her “extra” 5mg percosets, its coming from illegally smuggled fentanyl being sold illegally on the streets. Chronic pain patients are just a convenient sock puppet for the constant campaign mode our politicians are in, and they don’t care who they hurt to get elected or stay in power. Imho.

I agree with everything you said here, but just came by to say, “Kraken in the bathtub” is one of my favorite new idioms.

Jessica , to youshouldknow in YSK: Googling for terms on all lemmy domains

YSK: This doesn’t work in DuckDuckGo because I just independently had the idea to try this a few days ago and returned no results. I didn’t think to try on Google. I believe DuckDuckGo is running on Microsoft Bing so it likely doesn’t work there either

On DuckDuckGo you can use:

!g site: lemmy.*

It’s really location dependent. Some places you’ll see the birds in seconds and others never. You’ll need to know the climate, local weather, soil conditions, what else is growing in the area, time of year, etc. to get an accurate answer.

Zebov , to reddit in Redditors brigading against Lemmy

Probably bots. Reddit has been using them for some time, but recently got caught using chat gpt or something similar to argue against the blackouts.

Mon0 ,

The majority aren‘t bots. Most of them are legit no lifers to whom Reddit going down the drain would be a huge blow. I mean you work full time as a cashier for taco bell and you are not really happy with that situation. Some people go to school again, learn a skill… others spend all their time one Reddit stockpiling karma. Those are the people who really hate lemmy and anything that could remotely make Reddit worse, because they are heavily invested in the platform for the wrong reasons.

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

I think there’s also some Redditors who seem to think the story is Lemmy stealing their favourite subreddits and users. Rather than the loss being a reaction to the childish petulant CEO and his hare brain scheme.

It’s not a surprise as your stereotypical Redditor is somewhat uninformed.

markstos , to selfhosted in Podman is awesome—and totally frustrating

I see it as a feature that Podman containers are run via systemd. This makes their management consistent with the other systemd-managed services. Also, Docker does it own things with logs, while with systemd, the logs are managed in a consistent way as well.

Maybe you missed podman generate systemd? Podman will generate the systemd unit files for you.

For me, the two big benefits of podman are being able to run containers via systemd and improved security by being able to run them rootless.

denzuko ,
@denzuko@lemmy.world avatar

I actually find this a huge problem. Not all distros are built around LSB, XDG, or FreeDesktop.org nor should they be since not everyone is running Linux as a workstation/PC replacement. While yes for the most part podman can be ran on the likes of Gentoo, Alpine, Arch and etc. It becomes a pain in the arse to decouple the tooling for podman away from freedesktop.org standards. Even more a pain in the arse for clustering options (e.g. podman-remote expects freedesktop.org norms, kubernetes expects docker containerd or freedesktop.org with podman, and nomad stack is just bulky vaporware).

The really sad part of this is that podman isn’t adding much of anything new that LXC or linux namespaces outside of not needing a daemon, allowing rootless execution (again because it doesn’t need a daemon) and giving ACLs around which OCI repos could be pulled from unlike docker’s wildcard by default. It shouldn’t be hard to do linux containerization without being tied to anything other than the linux kernel.
