It’s a faff though isn’t it ? There’s no easy way to migrate subscriptions. And that doesn’t solve the issue of the web interface or apps not updating.

FelipeFelop OP ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

None of those apps cope with the changes. Which were introduced about three weeks ago in beta so plenty of time to update.

Liftoff hasn’t had an update in three months and doesn’t work properly with anything above 0.18.3 and get worse as the version number increases.

FelipeFelop OP ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

Sync is not compatible (until it’s updated) as more instances roll out newer versions you’ll get authentication errors.

FelipeFelop OP ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

I like Lemmy, what I don’t like is the haphazard time consuming way it works.

FelipeFelop OP ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

Wait until it’s updated (it’s missed 0.18.4 bug fix, 0.18.5 is rolling out and 0.19 is imminent)

FelipeFelop OP ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

Have you tried it? It’s unfortunately not reliable.

FelipeFelop OP ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

Check the liftoff developers chat. They know it isn’t working properly but have had PRs failing.

FelipeFelop OP ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

It seems to me that as well as the bullies (apparently it’s all my fault for not choosing instances by running a detailed analysis and not being aware of things that wouldn’t happen for months after I joined!) there’s also users who genuinely haven’t noticed any issues. Although they are on problematic instances and using apps the developer knows needs an update.

So it’s quite possible Lemmy will survive with most users on one or two big instances and some more who don’t know they are on troublesome instances.

FelipeFelop OP ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

That also needs updating. According to a post on Lemmy.ml all apps will need updating for 0.19 Some changes are also in 0.18.5 so most apps will need an update to work properly. (you might not be able to Login but if you’re already logged in you’ll see your feed but not the list of communities. The app will have needed to test against 0.18.4b8 or higher)

FelipeFelop OP ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

I’ve been told that 0.18.5 includes the changes from 0.18.4b8 that caused the last round of issues with some apps needing to be updated (eg Voyager) For example, Liftoff didn’t update so will have issues with 0.18.5

According to development chat they can test against it on a test instance but PRs are failing.

When they mess up (which happens a lot), why does he always go down the “you’ve hurt my feelings, we are only human route” ? That’s why they never learn from their mistakes and carry on acting like fools.

I can’t be bothered watching most of their videos anymore because they are so superficial, it’s clear he’s done no or little research and (if it’s on a topic I’ve got some interest in) I can see it’s really innacurate.

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

A few people have reported that the downvote button disappears and re-appears.

(Some instances don’t allow downvotes but that’s not what’s happening here)

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

The point is that as a user I have no control who else is on the instance but could get defederated anyway.

From the posts I’ve seen several admins have clear mental health issues. Silly rivalries and imagined upsets cause whole instances to be defederated. It’s sad in a way as most federations have councils or independent regulators to step in so that members don’t lose out by the actions of others. But not the fediverse.

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

But what happens (as did recently) when instances change direction? What happens (as did last year) where one instance admin had the wrong contact details for another so a message didn’t get through and ended up with an instance blocked and defederated for no good reason. What happens when an admin has an episode and gets in an argument that results in tit for tat blocks.

How can any new user know this might happen? How can they know what they are signing up for when descriptions are so brief?

Defederation is a good thing but unfortunately the people are human and fallible.

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

But what happens if the instance you are on is defederated through no fault of your own. As has already happened, even not through the fault of the instance admin but another instance making a mistake and adding it to a block list.

There isn’t an easy way to migrate everything to a new instance. And the migration options we do have a a bit buggy.

Perhaps people have seen the survey of ex-mastodon users? It really brings out that federation is simultaneously an advantage and a problem.

At the moment, it looks like the only solution is to have multiple accounts and when you do it’s starkly evident that there’s content that you miss because of federation issues

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

I don’t recognise that expectation. I simply expected to be able to join and interact with friends/online acquaintances without someone else’s decision about something I have no control cutting us off.

As for migration, in most cases you can’t yet migrate your post history and migrating your followers/following list is hit and miss.

These are practical issues that need sorting if the fediverse is to succeed and last. Otherwise people will end up back on managed services like Bsky, threads and Reddit.

Have you seen the jokey post going around. This is what it feels like in the fediverse.

“Hey, can you switch instances? Your admin favorited a joke that I didn’t appreciate once. Might need to block you otherwise. Oh, and that crowdfunding platform you use? Back in 2006 they let an organization I don’t personally align with use their platform. You should abandon that. Also, -”

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

Succeed doesn’t mean to become the greatest, it means to establish itself and survive.

In my opinion the feature you talk about will ultimately end up with small groups or single user instances shouting into the void as hardly anyone is federated with anyone else.

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

I’m not sure about that. Millions of people get on a plane or hot air balloon each year and are no longer on earth until they land.

If you mean go into space then it depends on the definition of space. The international standard would list 655 people. But by the US definition there are more (mainly military aircraft personnel)

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

When you go in a plane you are not on the surface of the earth. So I still say the OP means go into space.

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

You make a good point, the OP might have meant that.

There are merchants records and other civil documents from 1,200 years before Plato. In fact the oldest known letter of complaint dates from 1,750BC.

So I disagree.

@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

The comment I replied to.

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

I’m not sure how else to say it without repeating it.

I disagree that only the most educated people could read and write

I disagree that not many internet posts will be recorded for posterity

FelipeFelop ,

It’s actually a bit of an ‘urban myth’ it did apply in eg Victorian Times but at other points in history there was widespread literacy.

What you do find at some times is that an elite wrote and spoke one language but everyone else wrote another. Which was a way of controlling access to information. This is one reason that the Bible was in Latin and there was subterfuge needed to get the first Bible in English. (The pages were smuggled into the country)

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar
FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

That’s not what you asked for. I gave an illustration of the Bible being needed in English (which most people read) rather than Latin. So I gave you a source.

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

I’m beginning to think you might be trolling but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Some estimates put literacy in the ancient world as high as 40% excluding people who could read and write their name and basic words The decline in literacy after the Roman Empire is well documented and didn’t increase again until the Middle Ages. Buring and Van Zanden put the year 1451 as the point when it began to rise again.

If you want to see some discussion have a look here …paradoxplaza.com/…/literacy-rates-of-the-ancient…

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

Not sure what you mean.

Do you mean that people who grew up in an under developed area and who then had the shock of encountering technology, engineering, consumerism etc would be better able to cope with the similar experience of meeting an advanced galactic civilisation ?

That makes more sense.

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

I don’t mind the styling but it’s impossible to find a category of News. Say I won’t to see all the business news. I have to scroll until I find a business story and then tap the tiny word Business. I don’t know how I would find a category that didn’t have an article on the front page? Searching?

Just so much harder to use.

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

Agreed, whatever you do life is so much better when you leave the cesspool that it is Twitter.

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

Interestingly, the meaning of right and left being directions is fairly recent in English.

Originally right meant straight, true, proper. Right hand meant the proper hand to use. The left hand was considered wrong. Left meant weak or foolish.

(Even up to the 1970s left handed children were often punished in school for not using their right hand)

I think it’s a shift in the definition of “being loyal” to mean “I’ve stayed with you a long time” when it actually means “ I feel a bond that means I stay with you even though you have faults and I trust you”

Another vote for charity shops/thrift stores. It’s a good way to raise a little money for charity and for someone to get a book they might no afford at full price.

I don’t know about the rest of the world but here in the UK, supermarkets and businesses sometimes have a little bookshelf. You leave any books you don’t want and people can take them putting a few coins in a collection tin that goes to a good cause.

Another thing to do is take them to work, colleagues might well want them.

We have a habit of mispronouncing things on purpose for comedy effect. (no one laughs but us) So Sa-lid instead of salad. Chocolit instead of chocolate Wh-ind-oww instead of Window (think Stewie from Family Guy and how he says Cool Whip)

We’ll call it Pussyphobics Paradox.

“Given an infinite number of universes comprising a multiverse, at least one will have conditions that render a multiverse impossible”

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

It has great potential but seems stuck in TestFlight 😞

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

That’s true, but that’s no good if it never hits the App Store. How am I to persuade my friends to use it when there are partially complete features and they aren’t going to sign up for TestFlight? (Which is full anyway.)

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

That was really my point. Instead of adding extras. It would be better to finish the basic feature set and then release. If features are never completed because of the distraction of new features then an app will never be released.

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

But I’d been almost there for some time. In April it was ‘by the end of the month’ In May it was two weeks away. In June it became ‘soon’

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

Digital speedos average the speed over the last (eg) second and when it changes will usually do some form of animation between digits. This way you don’t get constantly fluctuating numbers.

As for analogue versus digital. It depends how you think of a speedo. If you think of it as a percentage of maximum then analogue is best (like a fuel gauge) but if you think of it as needing to know your ‘exact’ speed (like temperature) then digital is best.

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

Yes. People seem to think that medicines make you healthy when they actually stop things that are ailing you. Some medicines actually work to kill off part of you that’s gone wrong.

People also seem to think that taking a vitamin pill once a day will make you healthy even though you eat crap, vape and don’t exercise.

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

I’m not sure that’s entirely correct. It could be that some is reserved for video (that’s how it shows on my cheap work laptop)

They were simply considered shades of the same colour, that’s all. The light spectrum is continuous our breakdown of the continuity into discrete colours is purely arbitrary.

The colour we call sky-blue is considered a separate colour altogether in Japan (Misu)

Pink is named after the flowers Pinks and is called Rose in some languages but we use Rose for a different colour which is more magenta.

Notice how we don’t have words for some colours so use adjectives (bluey -green) There are some languages that don’t use or have any words for colours but alsways describe them. For example “bright fire like”

FelipeFelop ,
@FelipeFelop@feddit.uk avatar

Interesting, I didn’t know I had a form of colour blindness until I was messing around with the accessibility settings on a Samsung Galaxy S8. Suddenly everything looked so much better and I could immediately tell the difference between shades.

Having said that I still struggle with Coral. Is it pink or orange ?
