kotnik , to technology in How do you find RSS feeds that you're interested in?
@kotnik@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

This is how I manage it:

  • Usually I add feeds of blogs I find out from other aggregators (people posting links, HackerNews, Lobsters, Kotke.org, etc).
  • This website categorizes blogs, I found some really good gems there, so I follow their feed.
  • My RSS reader of choice (Inoreader) can show trending topics from feeds I am not following.
nicman24 , to selfhosted in Best things to host on a raspberry pi

honestly it is good to start with and for controlling machines like an array of 3d printers but a dumpster dive laptop will be faster. RPI4 is quite old now.

with that done:

  • jellyfin
  • smb server
  • syncthing
  • tftp with wake on lan / clonezilla to backup your other machines

jellyfin

How good is the performance of that on a rpi4? Does it work for transcoding videos?

spite ,

It doesn’t. Not well. And for larger files, even on cable connection without transcoding performance is god awful, sometimes it doesn’t play, or stutters or you get awful audio desyncs. Don’t do jellyfin on rpi

bitterb ,

Are you talking about 4k files? Because I have been running Jellyfin on my pi400 for the past two years and I’ve not had those issues at all. My content is 1080p max though.

spite ,

Yep, 4k, sometimes with HDR. It was happening mostly on those. But 1080p files were also sometimes affected

DevilBoom ,

I ran JF for about a year on a Pi 2B. Transcoding off at the server. No issues at all playing any file using Direct Play - including large 4K rips. I moved to an Odroid C2, again, absolutely no issues with playback.

If you’re seeing trouble with Direct Play I’d bank on it being network or storage related rather than the power of the Pi. E.g. the network hasn’t got enough throughput to serve the files. In Direct Play you need very little in terms of server resources as it’s handed off to the client.

spite ,

Dunno, maybe it was storage. I had a SATA to USB3 drive hooked up to it. Couldn't have been network. I got some old office PC with i3-6100 for free, hooked it up to the same cable, same router port and everything is working mostly smooth now, on similar drive but connected directly to SATA

You could try to sugarcoat your feelings a bit instead of going bluntly. But definitely, you need to take some distance, it seems to really weight on you.

gamebuster , to nostupidquestions in Are there any Reddit refugees spending more time on Lemmy than Reddit?

About 25% of time is spend here. I feel like Lemmy isn’t “there” yet but I want it to be. I’m thinking of creating my own instance with a custom GUI with a light-weight, less cluttered interface with some custom defaults.

I don’t game on windows just linux, but I have a windows VM on hand for the occasional bit of windows software I need. But these days that’s becoming a rare occurance. I still love my old Nikon photo editing software which lives on the VM, I just dont edit so many photos these days.

I bailed off of Reddit three months ago, after /r/Pathfinder2e started reaching peak echo chamber.

Native Bluetooth GPS support. I do mapping for OpenStreetMap a lot and the built in GPS modules are just too bad for that. Currently I have to use an app to get my Bluetooth GPS connected. But sometimes this app fails and the built in GPS takes over and ruins my logs.

Drudge , to youshouldknow in YSK: Installing a bidet attachment to your toilet is super easy and probably cleaner than using toilet paper.

ok…I’m intrigued. I’ve actually been using my kid’s baby wipes because really, anything is better than dry TP. Looking at some options on Costco, seems the cheapy is just a hand-held thing for $80, then the seat-integrated ones are around $300 and up. Is the seat integration worthwhile? What about water temp? Is it basically a cold-shot to the butthole? That’ll wake me up, no doubt.

I thought the cold shot to the hole was going to be horrible, but it’s actually a little refreshing.

Huh…OK more intrigued. I can’t say I’ve had that experience. FOMO is building.

mjhrrs , to youshouldknow in YSK: Deer and rabbits "park" their babies and spend most of the day away from them. If you find a baby all alone, it is almost definitely not abandoned.

To piggy back on this, you can touch “baby” animals. The mother will not leave them. If you disturb a nest, den, etc, place the young back to where they came and the mother will come back,.

nosut , to reddit in Reminder: Reddit is gone. Your community *is* official. If you're a mod, you're just as good as a reddit mod.
@nosut@lemmy.world avatar

I think a part of the “giving up to reddit mods” is the hopes that it will incentivise the reddit mods to push their subreddit to the community instead of trying to keep people on reddit just to maintain power.

Personally I have made several communities that I enjoyed in reddit. While I dont mind modding it’s kind of a pain in the ass as well though.
