schizanon , to technology in Is Crypto Finally Dead?

Weak hands got shaken out, and the economy is teetering on recession. When inflation stops and interest rates fall, and quantitative easing starts back up it’s gonna come roaring back. The SEC and CFTC aren’t trying to kill crypto, they are just trying to decide who’s jurisdiction it falls under. The crypto industry will benefit from regulation, it will get safer, and you’ll feel like an idiot for asking this question instead of buying while it’s cheap. Hit me up in 2025!

Something interesting. Like 2 USB-C ports, also a nice hard plastic back, since they are so hard to find now.

Oh boy do I have the phone for you Margot. Check out the ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate. It has a USB-C port on the bottom as you’d expect but also one on the side for when you’re holding the phone horizontally but still want to charge.

Is this actually happening? Reddit bots posting negative impact content to torpedo Lemmy?

I know the other day I saw John Oliver and Disney on the front page. I hope those users gets banned.

Ability to use the screen as a display through the USB port so I can debug a lot of my systems at home without needing to carry a monitor around.

original_ish_name ,

sounds like more of a software feature

bric ,

Actually I doubt it, video in and video out likely needs totally different wiring, so most phones probably couldn’t do it without hardware changes

RoundSparrow , to asklemmy in When subscribing to communities it occasionally says "Subscribe Pending" - any ideas why?

Lemmy federation, server to server, is having a number of problems. Comments and postings aren’t always getting copied over to all the servers who have subscribers. For over a week, Lemmy.ml has had regular nginx 500 error codes on the front page, sometimes you have to refresh 3 or 4 times to get a page to load.

Growing pains.

When subscribing to communities it occasionally says “Subscribe Pending”

Your specific issue is documented and I opened a fresh issue on it today: github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3203

It seems so odd too because if I didn’t know better, I’d assume “Full or Top Grain” was lower quality than “Genuine Leather” just by how the phrases sound.

Max 4 inch screen, IR blaster, physical keyboard with speed dial settings for buttons, form factor like the Xperia x10 mini pro, headphone jack, cameraless, LED with customisable lights for different notifications, bonus - built in projector, satellite phone capability,

Out of curiosity, why would you want a phone with no cameras?

And do phones with built in projectors exist? That sounds amazing, even if I would almost never use it

dutchkimble ,

I never really use the camera for anything meaningful, and prefer video call on the laptop.

Don't think projector phones exist, just a wishlist for something cool!

Q1: Correct

Q2: Not at present, but it’s a highly requested feature. I would imagine it will be around soon^tm^ in one form or another.

AbsurdityAccelerator , to android in What niche phone features would appeal to you?

I want a Galaxy Fold style phone, but the external screen is eInk. Have it set to always show the book I am reading. This will let me read in bite sized pieces.

bric ,

That would be awesome, although it might make the camera experience worse since you usually use the camera folded. I saw a prototype for a phone a while back that had a regular screen on one side and e-ink on the other, I always thought that was cool.

I’m new, an original refugee and don’t understand everything yet. I’m finding this place much more friendly and helpful and like it much better. I’m older (55) and used to work in IT, but all this still baffles me. I’m not going back because I abhor what’s going on. I’m hopeful that with time, all my favorite subs will be here and I already spend a lot of time here. I feel much more free to comment without fear of retribution and that’s a welcome relief. It was rather ostracizing on Reddit to feel that I shouldn’t comment because of all the negativity I would get. My life’s hard enough without getting put down for every little thing I said. I love it here and I’ve only been here for a week or so. Thanks everyone for being so nice.

doolittle , to piracy in Fediverse equivalent of r/OpenSignups?

I’m sad at how few alternatives I’ve been able to find for my go-to subs. Thankfully, the piracy community is nailing it.

jivandabeast OP ,

Agreed but as time goes on and the community grows these things will come! The piracy community in general i think is pretty quick to switch platforms because we’re so used to main hubs going down overnight (i.e. rarbg, kat, etc) and having to find the new spot.

dan96kid ,
@dan96kid@lemmy.world avatar

As far as I’m aware, only lemmy.world and some other instance I forgot the name of got defederated by them.

Lermatroid ,

That sucks and seems pretty short sighted :/

Does this mean posts from beehaw will not be in my lemmy feed, or is it simply I cannot interact with those posts in such a way that beehaw users would see?

Thteven ,

Beehaw will still be in the feed unless Lemmy defederates from them too. The comments you leave on beehaw posts will not be viewable to beehaw users though.

I'm really sorry to hear that they did this to you. I went through something similar, but only as a poster.

There was a really famous Usenet poster called Humdog who, back in 1994, wrote a brilliant essay called Pandora's Vox: On Community in Cyberspace. It talks of how cyberspace, instead of doing away with hierarchy and creating equality, actually commodifies its users and transfers power to large corporations.

cyberspace is a mostly a silent place. in its silence it shows itself to be an expression of the mass. one might question the idea of silence in a place where millions of user-ids parade around like angels of light, looking to see whom they might, so to speak, consume. the silence is nonetheless present and it is most present, paradoxically at the moment that the user-id speaks. when the user-id posts to a board, it does so while dwelling within an illusion that no one is present. language in cyberspace is a frozen landscape.

i have seen many people spill their guts on-line, and i did so myself until, at last, i began to see that i had commodified myself. commodification means that you turn something into a product which has a money-value. in the nineteenth century, commodities were made in factories, which karl marx called “the means of production.” capitalists were people who owned the means of production, and the commodities were made by workers who were mostly exploited. i created my interior thoughts as a means of production for the corporation that owned the board i was posting to, and that commodity was being sold to other commodity/consumer entities as entertainment. that means that i sold my soul like a tennis shoe and i derived no profit from the sale of my soul. people who post frequently on boards appear to know that they are factory equipment and tennis shoes, and sometimes trade sends and email about how their contributions are not appreciated by management.

You can read it all here:

It really does show that none of this is new. It's what the internet really always has been.

This should be a lesson to all remaining mods to stop putting their effort into that site. Reddit doesn’t care about who helped build it. They only care about making money for themselves.

What a shitty way to remove you. Completely uncalled for.

Mods should quit moderating altogether IMO, more than 20 thousands participated in the protest, there's no way they could replace them all in a reasonable time-frame, it would be a much better chaos than the blackout.
