Thanks 🙏 That’s what I’ll do.

I tried to install GrapheneOS from Chromium, but online installation doesn’t work on snaps, I had to go hunting for apks because Ubuntu doesn’t allow you to just choose which version of the program you want

That’s the opposite of what I want from Linux. I installed NixOS on my new laptop

@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

My former best friend (and best man at my wedding) ended up trying to scam me for drug money a few months after my daughter was born and we were basically broke because of it. He ended up scamming my mom instead. Obviously, I broke it off and never spoke to him again, but something made me realize a few months ago that I could look up his record out of curiosity.

Not only was it a mile long, he is currently in prison for running a meth lab.

This was a guy who, when we met in middle school, wanted to compose classical music and even ended up going to music school for it before dropping out and beginning his long descent into drug abuse. I was doing the same drugs he was in college (or at least I was in the beginning), but he graduated to a pill addiction and then eventually, I guess, meth.

But at least he wasn’t a SovCit.

Trigger2_2000 ,

Sorry for the loss of your friend; he sounds like he was a neat guy.

Drugs take far too many people away from us each day.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Very true. I really never thought he would sink so low as to scam one of his closest friends like that. When he just had a baby.

Atelopus-zeteki , to asklemmy in Why is music so loud in restaurants? (Serious)
@Atelopus-zeteki@kbin.run avatar

Tile or concrete floors, hard surface walls, glass windows all reflect sound. As people start talking, if they are drinking they get louder, so then each table is trying to talk over the tables around them. Without acoustic damping, it can get pretty loud.

Drusas ,

That's a big part of it, but some people are just loud and some restaurants just play their music way too loud all the time.

Dicska ,

Some bosses want to make sure you can hear the music at a decent volume at the back tables. Meanwhile the front tables:

I live in a national park and the Govt just awarded a contract to a private company to build a fiber line to the villages for high speed internet, and the company building the thing will own the network while the govt is stuck paying the bill forever. So stupid imho. No private company should own a network that exists entirely on federal land, and everyone depends on .

boonhet ,

Wait, you live IN a national park?

God damn that sounds awesome. But yeah, the private fiber line sucks. Same happening in my country with most “last mile” connections belonging to exactly one private company. Whereas our neighbours to the south (Latvia) nationalized the entire network and everyone benefits from having competition (same company, Telia, has their prices like 80% lower there than here - claiming that Estonians don’t care about price)

uis ,

Whereas our neighbours to the south (Latvia) nationalized the entire network

Adding this to my wish list for Russia of the Future. Not Latvia, nationalization.

I think Latvia is already on the wish list for Russia unfortunately, just not yours

You’ve just made your first post regarding Arch. The cycle is complete.

Andromxda , to linux in So I installed Arch Linux... Is this it?
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

The AUR is pretty awesome. If a piece of software exists on Linux, it’s in the AUR. Even software that doesn’t have a native Linux version can sometimes be found these, e.g. repackaged versions of Electron apps for Windows.

And once you start really customizing your system, you’ll see the value of the Arch Wiki. If there’s something you can do on Arch, the Wiki probably has a well-written guide for it.

moody ,

I used the Arch wiki to get gamescope working on Pop OS. It’s a great resource regardless of your distro. In many cases the info on there is not even Arch-specific.

Thann ,
@Thann@lemmy.ml avatar

100% its the Wiki and AUR!

On every other distro, once you want a program not in the package manager, it will likely be broken by the next update. On arch 99.995% of the time it will be in AUR and you can just make a simple PKGBUILD when its not, so your updates will automatically recompile all of your personal projects!

ari_verse ,

Well these days we have flatpak to solve the “not in the repo” (or ‘old version in the repo’) problem.

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Only for (some) desktop applications. The AUR has everything, including CLI tools, configurations and even some niche scripts

theshatterstone54 ,

Exactly. I hate when people constantly bring in Flatpak, because I’d be happily using Debian, if I could have Qtile Wayland with Qtile-extras and Hyprland in the repos with all their dependencies. But that’s never happening, especially for Qtile. These are window managers, you can’t package them in a Flatpak. And what about niche cli tools, as you mentioned? Or what about the latest Neovim on Debian? Yes, there’s a Flatpak but do you really want to mess with a Flatpaked CLI app? I know I don’t.

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yeah imagine having to type in flatpak run io.neovim.nvim to launch Neovim

Yeah, what's the issue? Would you rather like 250 options? They'll probably code it so you need to toggle them separately. The color scheme is probably because of the same reason there is just one switch: They don't put that much effort in an elaborate scheme to spam people. It's just the bare minimum.

Its been a while since I used a Kindle but AFAIK its still this - using Calibre + the deDRM plugin. I don’t know if linking directly to stuff here is OK so just do an internet search for github noDRM deDRM_tools and you should find the plugin you need for Calibre.

Seeing the community we’re in? It’s probably fine. Let’s hope my instance’s mods are OK with this!

HakFoo , to amateur_radio in Random question for today: Considering people who are not amateurs, if you wanted to create increased visibility and participation in amateur radio, what would you do?

As a non-amateur who every few months thinks “I should consider getting a license”, I’ve been hoping for an obvious bootstrap point.

The library has some old “here’s every exam question” style cram books, but I’m actually looking for a course for understanding, so I don’t pass the exam and proceed to have no idea what to do or how to behave. That went so well eith the driver’s license exam. :)

667 ,
@667@lemmy.radio avatar

Here’s your bootstrap. Assuming you’re in the US, HamStudy.org. Spaced repetition studying for the exam, no Morse code requirement anymore.

FCC exams can now be administered remotely via computer. I’ve taken all three of my exams remotely; my first while sitting on a beach!

k0stk ,
@k0stk@mastodon.radio avatar

@667 @HakFoo Unfortunately our club is fixated on scheduled instructor led classes (death by powerpoint for the most part) and in-person administration of electronic tests.

They deliberately conceal the fact that self-study and on-demand remote testing are options when people inquire about getting licensed.

edit: fixed wordwrap

667 ,
@667@lemmy.radio avatar

That’s disappointing to hear. What would be the fallout within your club if you were to just go get licensed on your own? Does your jurisdiction permit licensure outside of clubs?

k0stk ,
@k0stk@mastodon.radio avatar

@667 In the US licensure is independent of clubs.

There is gatekeeping going on. It seems to stem from OMs who want to control how folks get into hobby.

Although they won't turn away a warm body toting a license...

Edit: added tag line

667 ,
@667@lemmy.radio avatar

Ahh ok, I’m US licensed also. Was surprised to see your club insists on such a rigid learning experience.

You’ll know best for your present situation, but I’d encourage you to just go get your license on your own and get on the air. There’s plenty of media channels to learn.

k0stk , (edited )
@k0stk@mastodon.radio avatar

@667 I'm already licensed ... went "from zero to hero" on my own over a span of about 4 months back in 2011.

It's just so frustrating seeing the obstacles which are constantly thrown in the way of people who want to become licensed (or upgraded).

Edit: licensing year

@667@lemmy.radio avatar

100%

That’s wild your club makes newbies sit through such a course and refuses any kind of modernizations. OMs for sure.

ndz ,
@ndz@noauthority.social avatar

@HakFoo @vk6flab The real learning begins (and continues indefinitely) AFTER you get your license. Learn to follow the rules and not hurt anyone

Go through HamStudy.org and start taking practice tests. (I also picked up Gordon Wests books and did a once-through).

One tip is to grab the tech and general at the same sitting.

Got an cheap HT (handheld dual band)? Get on RepeaterBook, program repeaters in, and start listening to local nets. Test in person if you can but online is also avail

vk6flab OP ,
@vk6flab@lemmy.radio avatar

The answer on how to get your licence depends on which country or locality you live.

If you are comfortable sharing that, we can likely get you a starting point.
