My OS makes my computer just work. I’m on KDE Neon which is “unstable” but in my case just works. Ubuntu just works. Fedora just works. Mint just works. Debian just works. Windows just works. For every use case? No.
Windows is just another OS. It’s a good one, but not for every use case.
80% of people in the world would disagree with you. If you ask them which OS just works they will answer Windows, esp. if they have a bit of experience in dealing with Linux or tried it out for a brief time.
80% of people have never tried Linux and I’m pretty sure 80% of people only use computers for browsers, email and basic word processing. For those use cases almost every Linux just works. Meanwhile Windows is dropping support for old hardware so it’ll just stop working.
I mean, sure, if you buy a computer with Windows on it it’ll most likely just work for most of it’s lifespan but if you buy a Tuxedo laptop it’s pretty much supported for life.
In my opinion the UX and customization in windows is complete garbage so it very much doesn’t just work for me.
The more I listen to them the more I love them. They Schools is on my list to share here. I don’t know how I wasn’t aware of them during their heyday. While I’m not their core demographic, I have always listened to a lot of hip hop, and even back in the day tended towards the more conscious hip hop. (BDP etc.) If you aren’t aware, Arrested Development’s last few albums are absolute bangers also.
Arch is perfect, it’s like THE Linux. It’s not really opinionated about anything, it just helps you do it. Hell you can “pacman -S apt” and slowly become a debian

I HIGHLY recommend against the T495. That thing has a great keyboard, fingerprint sensor, okay camera and mics, okay ports. But it is underpowered af, and Thinkpads always have the Thinkpad price.
It has a great chassis, but my coreboot Clevo NV41 has double the performance and kinda same battery life.
I disagree with it being underpowered for regular office use and media consumption. If you can get your hands on a 16 GB RAM one, it should be able to handle just about anything other than gaming.
The RAM doesnt matter, it has 8GB builtin (or is there a 4GB model??) and one slot flexible.
Yes the CPU is okay for regular office stuff. But the AMD linux support was suboptimal, I had regular suspend-resume issues where the lockscreen would freeze and I needed to hard shutdown.
And… for some reason that thing doesnt even boot anymore. Removed the battery, using official charger. Doesnt boot into the BIOS anymore, no idea what I could do honestly.
Another vote for the T480. I have a T480s running Mint and it’s been lovely. No driver issues and for office/light media creation/consumption it seems to work without a hitch.
I would vote against getting something like a T490 as it has one memory slot soldered onto the motherboard and it has the same processor as the T480 anyways iirc.
Yes, and that’s the point of Archlinux. It’s nothing special, at least in the way it is configured. You make it special. You build your distribution more or less. You are the opinionated one, not the distribution. I think what people are “obsessed with Arch” is, that you have to manage it yourself and you build it yourself. It is the philosophy that is appealing I guess. In example not much is automated. Stuff is described in the wiki and community and it is expected that you learn the stuff and understand and then do it yourself, instead relying on automated and preconfigured stuff from a regular distro.
On my main system I use EndeavourOS, which is basically Arch, but with some pre-configs and opinions, and comes with some automation tools.
My theory is that the RTSP port (554) is for streaming and that when I go to the local address (that is on 80), the site ITSELF initiates a connection to port 554 in the background. However, this apparently does not happen when I connect remotely.
I think you’re on the right track here. The DVR is probably telling your browser to connect to 192.168.1.222:554 for the stream, which on LAN is fine because you have a route to 192.168.1.222, but when connecting externally you won’t be able to get to 192.168.1.222.
You can probably check the network connections in dev tools in the browser to confirm that.
Edit: Editing this to also stress the importance of the advice given by @SteveTech. My home cameras are also only accessible from outside my network via wireguard.

IMHO, it missed the boat on everything to do with tech, and tech is basically 21st century capitalism. The only tech in Europe are secondary services like booking.com that ultimately depend on primary services (Google Search, Youtube, Facebook Platform, Twitter, …etc). I agree in large part with Varoufakis. Although he is “on the left” he has better investment sense than all the suits who control European capital.

The suits who control European capital are Americans. People like Von Der Leyen and Shultz, or in my country Ireland, Harris, work for American interests. You see it in everything they do. They’re not stupid or lacking sense.
This “elite capture” is so complete that when the US is caught spying on Europe’s leaders, there is a deafening silence in the media. When the US blows up Nordstream pipeline and everyone knows it, even average Europeans stay silent.

I thought it was always common knowledge? If you mean they’ve admitted it well no they haven’t. But nobody honest can pretend that they seriously deny it. They threatened to do it on multiple occasions and there are no other plausible suspects.
Check out IMEC and ASML, they are innovators in the semiconductor sector. Though I believe ASML has a large (or majority?) US interest, they are still headquartered in the Netherlands.

Well the US are maybe a bit more innovative here, but actually they are just much more aggressive. Things like facebook, twitter, Reddit etc. need to harvest user data aggressively and sell them. In Europe this is seen very critically so it is much more risky to make this a business model. Also AI, they have not been been particularly clever with Chat GP, they just haven been totally reckless and just ignored any concerns guideline etc. Another sector is Oil and Gas. While Europe heavily suffers in case of energy prices, because they have no natural resources, guess who makes all the profit. The fracking and also other gas industries in the US are booming heavily. China on the other side has not those old and high depts like Japan, US or Europe. And the invest everything in those new technologies like batteries etc. also they have still a very high youth unemployment, so they continue their pish to become a global manufacturing powerhouse. But since wages go up, they have have competition from Asia and Africa. Yes the German industry is not strong at the moment and will not grow also in the next years, but most people are also somehow saturated with what they have. So many people just try to work less, which of course makes it hard to compete with other countries. But I still Europe has a certain edge in „educated“ workforce.
