I think conversion rates might throw this theory off.

Hopefully Google moves to a proper ultrasonic sensor like every other brand with the Pixel 8. I really want to move from Samsung so I can take advantage of rooting and stuff like Lineage, but the hardware is just… so awful.

There are 5 different forums on the internet about this topic.

You don’t have to join all or any of them. But they are each available to you.

@SexualPolytope I wrote my own music player, after that I installed PiHole. After that I realized there were much better music players out there :-P

I do use a couple of containers written by myself. There are a probably better alternatives out there, but these do exactly what I want them to do, no bloat, and I know them inside out, so I keep using them.

Plex on my Pi 3

This is more or less how I started learning Linux too

TheButtonJustSpins , to selfhosted in What is your machine naming scheme?

Servers (physical or virtual) get named based on usage: host-lab-01, vpn-guest-name, nas-01, proxmox-01, etc.

My wife’s laptops get named [her name]-[model].

My machines (physical or virtual) get named after fairies from Pixie Hollow.

Writing this out makes me think I did my wife’s machines dirty, though. Should have named them after fairies as well.

SirEDCaLot , to nostupidquestions in New moderator needed! [META]

I’d be interested. I have experience moderating Reddit communities (I’m /u/SirEDCaLot over there too).

I’m Eastern time. But I can’t commit to any specific amount of availability for two reasons. 1. My real life is pretty hectic and many days I literally have no time at all to participate let alone moderate, and 2. Lemmy/Reddit for me is a hobby, not a job, and I have no desire to change that. So my availability is ‘when I have time and feel like doing it’. Sometimes that will mean I disappear for days, sometimes that means I’m on for multiple hours per day.

What I will say though- is that whatever I do have time to do, I will do well. I believe in treating users with respect, even when they break seemingly simple rules. I’ve found that if you don’t assume bad faith and treat people with respect, even when they appear to be idiots, more often than not they return the gesture.
I also believe that moderators are more like janitors than gods. So I’m not interested in ‘power’.

clueless_stoner OP ,
@clueless_stoner@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks for your input! To be able to moderate this community on our instance, you’d need to be on our instance, haha. If you ever feel like you could help or have the (mostly) consistent time in the future, then feel free to reach out.

SirEDCaLot ,

Making an account is easy. Consistent time, not so much. Heh.

Depending on the size of the machine I’ll call it big/large/huge/small/Lil then a human name like John. BigJohn is my main server and hopefully one day he can get an upgrade and become large John.

This, but it’s all suggestive names, such as:

Big Johnson, Small Richard, lil Peter, Huge Willy, etc.

I don’t hate it yet, since they’re the memes of my childhood/teen years, so tbh I find them funnier than the post 2016/18 bullshit

Transcendant , to android in Has anyone had any luck with the Google Pixel 7A fingerprint sensor?

Mine was a bit patchy at first but now seems to be fine. I came to 7a from an ole’ samsung s9, which was v reliable but in a different position (back) so it took some getting used to.

I’m using my thumb, because using a finger would mean going two-handed (prefer having it on the back tbh). I’ve only scanned one position, and I do find it’s finicky in terms of needing to be in a certain position; I also find I need to press down more firmly than I expect, and it pretty much doesn’t work if my thumb is damp or wet.

Maybe what @WhoRoger suggested will fix it, pls update the post if it does!

Wow, someone else has actually heard of Cypriots.

I'm sure we'll go back to being forgotten about in like five minutes, but I'm gonna enjoy this moment while it lasts.

Tandybaum ,

At my old company I had a few coworkers in Cyprus and they were some great people. One of my US coworkers ended up moving there. I did a video call with him and saw the view he had and holy shit that was the most beautiful beach I’ve ever seen.

Xariphon ,

I'm mostly kidding; I'm an American mutt myself. My father's family is from Cyprus, though, and I would love to see the place with my own eyes at least once in my life.

20gramsWrench , to linux in Distro suggestions?

your computer can pretty much run every single distribution in any desktop environment without a problem so go wild and try lots of them, pick anything a let yourself have a good week with it and it’s online documentation to do your thing every of them have good and bad parts. when asked the filesystem pick btrfs and set-up snapshots, that will save your ass when needed and it’s so quick you could break your system every week without being bothered

TonyTonyChopper , to nostupidquestions in Do I understand correctly that I have to subscribe to 5 different NoStupidQuestions on 5 different instances?
@TonyTonyChopper@mander.xyz avatar

you fundamentally misunderstand lemmy. These are all independent communities, hosted by different admins.

Hangglide ,

Which is stupid.

QualisArtifexPereo ,

I think over time some instances and some admins will become more popular, and weed out the rest.

DogMuffins ,

To some extent perhaps but I don’t think that should be the objective.

Just subscribe to all the “no stupid questions” communities. It’s no big thing.

BradleyUffner ,

New ones get created all the constantly. Are they supposed to spend all their time monitoring every instance for new variants of a community?

vashti ,

I mean, this is how everything worked already. People start subreddits and have to get traction, make their way to /r/all, etc. Having one single space wasn’t magic, and things work exactly the same.

If you see a community that interests you, subscribe to it and be the change.

  • DogMuffins ,

Of course you’re welcome to that opinion but it’s a fundamental design feature of the fediverse.

There’s no central point of control. Anyone can create an instance and create their own “No stupid questions” community.

There are obvious benefits if you’d care to consider them but if not it’s fine if the fediverse isn’t for you. There’s always reddit I guess.

    Hangglide ,

There is nothing stopping the fediverse from checking with other instances to see if a name is already in use. That would be a pretty cool feature to avoid a whole bunch of duplication.

    can ,

They’re not duplicates. Remember /r/games and /r/gaming? Both with unique moderation styles? Well now they don’t need different names.

    mosiacmango ,

Yup, this is just as easy If you notice one of the “[email protected]” communities is always posting edgy bullshit, you unsub and go on your way. No different than unsubing from “Actual” or “True” variants on reddit.

    DogMuffins ,

    Yes there is.

It’s decentralised. There’s no central authority.

Even if lemmy imposed that restriction, you could just fork the code and remove it.

    PlutoniumAcid ,
    @PlutoniumAcid@lemmy.world avatar

Wait, he’s got a point though: Why not something like this:

A user wants to create a new community. He enters a name, then the system checks and informs that “the fediverse already has a community by that name +here and +here.” The user may still create this same community on this instance - or he might say, hey cool thanks, and go subscribe to (one of?) the existing ones instead.

    DogMuffins ,

This would only help if people creating these communities were not aware that communities with the same name exist on other instances.

Even if this feature did discourage someone from creating a new community, some other fief lord would be along shortly to create it.

I did feel the same way about multiple communities initially, but now I’ve been here a while I realise that it’s just not a problem - just subscribe to all of them, that’s the solution.

    Shikadi ,

Not really, it’s just not Reddit

    XEAL ,

    And confusing

    Synthead ,

This is the same thing as having a community on Discord, Reddit, Twitter, and Facebook, except you get the feature of them seamlessly working together.
