I just wish “gamers” would get less angry, anger management or something.

Evergreen5970 ,

Something that really doesn’t help is that although I am a gamer, I hear about how toxic many multiplayer environments are, so I never join them. I’ll only play with my real life friends, who aren’t going to call me a racial slur if I make a mistake or am honest-to-goodness bad at the game.

A toxic environment leads to droves of people who won’t tolerate it fleeing. Most people who won’t tolerate toxicity also would not perpetuate a toxic environment themselves—in other words, the toxicity drives out lots of non-toxic people. Now the proportion of toxic to non-toxic people is much more slanted towards the toxic.

PC, and then whatever the current generation consoles are (assuming they remain just Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft so there are only 3).

Now I have access to every game ever. Mostly on PC due to having a larger back catalogue and through emulation.

If I am not allowed the PC due to it “not being a console” then I will use a modded Xbox instead and still have emulation and the ability to install windows for all those PC games.

Jaxseven OP ,
@Jaxseven@beehaw.org avatar

Since the Steam Deck is a PC and a console, I think there’s definitely an argument to call a PC is a console, so long as it’s designed like one. If not the Steam Deck, then a small form factor PC running something like ChimeraOS. Windows is just too cumbersome to use anywhere other than sitting at a desk, and even then I hate it so much.

Auster , to gaming in Choose Four Consoles to Have the Largest Selection of Games

Modded PS Vita, since upon modding, its scope of playable games becomes ridiculously high. Native games, PSP and PS1 games supported natively which can be expanded upon modding with homebrews and back ups of official releases you paid for, plenty of emulators for both the Vita and the PSP, wrappers for Android and PC games, as well as ports of game engines, getting released pretty much every week, and OS extensions for forwarding the Vita's screen to another device, making certain bluetooth controllers compatible, fixing/improving the system, and so on and so forth. It's a nice console. :3

Did you know you could make a dock to hook up the Vita to a TV? I tried it and it’s pretty impressive. Really shows you what life would be like in an alternate timeline where Sony actually knew how to market the Vita.

ColdCreasent , to selfhosted in what is the current recommendation for a simple home NAS?

Simplest I’ve found personally is using an old Pc and getting a PCIE sas/SATA expansion card to allow more drives to be added if you need more than the normal data limit. Use windows server 2019 or 2022. The trial periods for these are 180 days that can be renewed another 5 times which gives a long time before you reinstall the OS. Then you share the folder/drive like normal. It’s simplest because it’s still a GUI and windows.

You can also pool drives so that multiple drives appear like a single drive, this is supported in windows itself (I forget the name in settings) or you can look at something like “drivepool”. I use this to have a “main pool” with a few large drives and then a “backup pool” which is mostly old 1tb or larger drives and use a program like “cobain reflector” to automate a backup of the main pool. Nice thing about “drive pool” is, if the server goes down for any reason, I can still pull each drive out and read whatever is on each drive without having to process them back into a “pool”. The files are just natively visible. Feel free to ask for extra info if anyone is interested.

redballooon ,

old Pc

Watch power consumption though. It matters for a device that runs potentially 24/7

ColdCreasent ,

Very true. It runs at good throttled speeds and the biggest power consumers are the hard drives themselves.

redballooon , (edited )

Oh I would recommend Synology too, but since many already did there’s no reason to do this again.

    I’m happy to see Sony bring PS3 games to PS5, though it’s not how I would’ve wanted. You’ll have some of Sony’s best PS3 games for sure, but for those games like Folklore you’ll need a PS3 (or Steam Deck, I haven’t tried emulating my copy yet). I also don’t like paying a subscription service to play the games that are already sitting on my shelf, but I’m the minority here as a lot of people I talk to like NSO and PS+.

    Better as in more information, much of it useful, but far less monetary reward for narcissism.

    dmention7 ,

    Yeah, as someone who used to frequent car forums back in the day, one way I think about it is you might have Mazda, Subaru, Ford, Chevy, etc specific forums. And they all had subsections devoted to suspension upgrades, with a lot of content that would look really similar to someone just getting into cars. But they also met the different needs of the different communities, and had their own vibes and culture.

    Now imagine all those communities could interact with each other directly, and you end up with something like what we’re getting with the Fediverse.

    Or maybe I’m just too hung up on analogies, idk.

    0rly ,

    Can you be any more condescending? Op has a point, it is not ideal to have the same community on different instances. There is no need to be a dick about it.

    Sorry, didn’t mean to be dickish. I just reread my post. Saying “sounds like you’re expecting a corporate experience” was an observation is not an insult.

    Decentralized stuff is fundamentally different than centralized coordinates corporate stuff. Serious question, do you understand how it is that so many people can start so many similar communities?

    dangblingus ,

    It’s not the same community. It’s 5 different communities on 5 different instances that all happen to have the same name. It will be the owners of those communities to determine whether or not they want to consolidate.

    czech , to selfhosted in SBC with 2 SD card slots?
    @czech@no.faux.moe avatar

    You'd be better off with something that has an EMMC slot (or ideally SATA connection). Running the OS off of an SD card is painfully slow. I've also found USB storage to be way more reliable than SD cards, in general. I used an external 4-bay drive connected via usb3 for years and never had issues. Burned through many SD cards over the same period.

    MigratingtoLemmy OP ,

    Hi, do you suggest a USB drive (the small ones from Samsung/Sandisk) as primary/secondary storage? Should I run the OS on it too?

    Actually, at this point I might even consider running a mini PC with 3 slots for storage drives (2 SATA + 1 NVME/2 NVME + 1 SATA, etc). Know anything I can use?

    czech ,
    @czech@no.faux.moe avatar

    The mini PC is your best bet. I only have ARM SBCs but they have a lot of limitations. If I needed something new it would likely be a used mini PC. I dont have any suggestions unfortunately. I saw something posted a couple weeks ago that was some university surplus- $30 used mini PC's, including the case- which will run circles around any ARM SBC. I think shipping was another $30 but still a great deal. Find something like that.

    Nyanix , to nostupidquestions in Where did all this reddit hatred come from?
    @Nyanix@lemmy.ca avatar

    I do think there are waves of people moving from Reddit to Lemmy for one reason or another, each of them infuriated with Reddit and needing to express it. We had the wave of people that reacted to the news of the API changes, people that moved over after Reddit responded poorly to the protests, people that moved here after their Reddit app of choice stopped working, people after the latest set of third party apps stopped working, people after Reddit removed gold, people after the app icon was changed…

    People are at different stages of dealing with Reddit, some of us who left sooner have moved on, some people are moving here currently outraged with Reddit, and some are in between.
    I imagine we’ll keep seeing these waves of people for a while, and that’s ok, the best thing we can do is validate their feelings toward Reddit, welcome them, and keep the memes rolling.

    Candelestine OP ,

    Very well said. This encompasses the conclusion I eventually came to myself from reading people’s conversations in this thread.

    rufus ,

    Yeah. That’s also what i’ve told people. It just takes some time for things to settle, until a new balance and new culture is established. We need to figure out a few things, maybe cry or get angry. Solve technical problems and so on. There are real feelings involved and a few people have lost a place they once belonged or a community they liked. I still see disappointment, frustration mixed with excitement and curiosity for something novel. Things will settle down and the past feelings will become less important.

    ImplyingImplications ,

    I mean you don’t have to just assume guilt. People representing themselves never do well. There’s a reason why it’s said representing yourself is taking on an idiot for a client.

    I’ve seen a few cases self represent (outside small claims). They all lost. It was beautiful in its train-wreckiness. One got an appeal (!) because the judge didn’t do his due diligence in making sure the dude was competent to be his own attorney and it turns out he wasn’t, so it was remanded back to trial court. Where he represented himself again. Kinda made me chuckle, that one.
