Not quite related to selfhosting but modding routers and then DIYing x86 routers kinda got me into the scene.

notfromhere ,

Yea modding routers can be a lot of fun. Can be super unstable sometimes too. Are you still practicing? What’s your favorite custom firmware?

qazwsxedcrfv000 , (edited )
@qazwsxedcrfv000@lemmy.unknownsys.com avatar

No not anymore. I no longer find it necessary now. Things have become much easier. Many routers have out-of-factory OpenWrt support or are outright built with/on OpenWrt. Companies like GL.iNet has made the barrier to entry the lowest ever.

Gone were the days we had to spot the right hardware versions, find ways to access debug ports, tinker with das uboot (or it had to be added…), flush the official firmware, and flash the right OpenWRT image. And this often would set you down on a path to compile the “right” kernel to work with proprietary driver/firmware blob files so hardware acceleration (e.g. NAT or WiFi radio) could work properly… Indeed I have learnt a lot but honestly I don’t really miss those days lol

I never served, but worked at an Exchange on a Navy base. Freshly promoted Chief’s wives love to try to make us in the store call them by their husband’s rank or whatever other nonsense they thought they deserved, but guess what? I’m not in the chain of command at all and there’s nothing in the employee handbook that makes me abide by any of that.

POSIX specifies the API available to programs, and also shell and commands and stuff available to users. It does not specify which functions should be available from the standard C library, and which should be available from the kernel: from the standpoint of POSIX, it’s all the same. POSIX doesn’t care how the API is implemented, just that it is implemented correctly.

ninjan , to piracy in Which kindle(?) to buy for downloaded books

Basically there’s Kobo and Kindle where I’m at that are good. For me I like a bit more premium stuff in terms of having decent build quality etc and that means it’s either Kindle Paperwhite or Kobo Libre 2 that fits me. Both have proprietary shit software and their own bookstore but both can be side loaded. I generally prefer buying tried and tested hardware even if there probably exist some niche fully open source device out there but they tend to cost a lot more due to lacking scale of production. I wouldn’t however buy either of those new. I’ve setup reminders on second hand websites in my area and waiting till I find one in a good condition/price. Where I’m at that means for a almost unused device it should be about 10-20% below lowest historic price new. And older models around 50% below cost of a new model, naturally with a lot of variance depending on condition etc.

Military is such a fucking joke. Why the fuck would you salute anyone for anything? Bunch of fucking power freaks with a domination kink and their equally as kinky doggies who would literally die for a piece of colored rag on a stick oil company profits.

EarWorm ,

The only purpose of a mandatory military service like where I live is to teach young people to obey authority without question. That somehow makes you “a real man”.

raydenuni ,

It’s necessary in order to get soldiers to kill or go die as both of these are unnatural to humans.

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

Why would killing be unnatural to humans. Even in the nomadic lifestyles we hunted for food.

raydenuni ,

Killing other humans specifically. …berkeley.edu/…/hope_on_the_battlefield

Pat12 ,
TheHalc ,

You live in Finland.

We have military service here because we’re a small country with a large and aggressive neighbour that not only has attacked us within living memory, but is currently demonstrating what it does to neighbouring countries that it thinks it can get away with attacking.

If military service makes sense anywhere…

EarWorm ,

I am not against military service. I am against MANDATORY military service. Do you honestly think that giving people a choice is a bad thing? That making people choose between learning to kill and obey or going to jail is justified? Or do you think that the majority of young people wouldn’t serve if it wasn’t mandatory? Please.

TheHalc ,

This is like saying:

I am not against taxation. I am against MANDATORY taxation. Do you honestly think that giving people a choice is a bad thing?

No-one wants mandatory military service, but it’s necessary for the sake of society as a whole. Maybe one day it won’t be, but clearly that’s not the case now.

As for choice, you do have a choice and you know it. Civilian service is a thing here.

EarWorm ,

Are you actually comparing paying for healthcare, infrastructure and social security to military service? That’s pretty ridiculous and I think you know it.

Mandatory military service is absolutely not necessary for the sake of society. In Norway, for example, around 80% are released from service and it’s doing quite alright. Sweden is doing fine, too and only a portion of eligible people are actually called in.

And you’re just glossing over the fact that the overwhelming majority in Finland would still serve if it wasn’t mandatory, according to polls the willingness to serve has never really dropped.

And regarding the civilian service, I went there. It’s a year for everyone, instead of 6 months minimum for the military. You also get paid the same as the fresh recruits in the military, which is simply not enough for a civilian. You try living with the day wage if you don’t believe me. And that pay is for a 40h work week. Those conditions are in places worse than the conditions in open prisons, like in Suomenlinna for example. So civilian service is in essence a prison sentence.

holeydood3 , to til in TIL Reddit used to be open source. In 2017, they went closed source citing ‘transparency’ issues

Saying they cited transparency issues is disingenuous. They never mentioned transparency in their announcement. What their reasoning was is that they didn’t like having to worry about leaking unreleased features through their repos, and instead of finding a technical solution they decided to just stop maintaining their public repos instead and made the code closed source. It’s shitty, but they didn’t say it was done for transparency reasons.

Here’s the actual announcement: reddit.com/…/an_update_on_the_state_of_the_reddit…

Thugosaurus_Rex , to gaming in Instead of "casual" or "ranked" they should just have "play to win" or "play for fun."

There was a brief time in the late 90s to early 2000s where you’d just hop into an open server. The lobby would keep the same players as it went round to round and people would just filter in and out as they felt like it. It didn’t track scores or stats between games, and there wasn’t a leveling or progression system that followed you. You just played through the round as it came. People seemed to care a whole lot less about their record or team–it just seemed like everyone was happy to be able to play online. Maybe it’s just because I’m older now and I’m looking back at it with rose tinted glasses, but I wish we could go back to casual modes like that. I don’t have the energy or will to deal with people the way it’s set up now.

ampersandrew ,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

I remember those times. They were awful. I had no fun if the people I started the match with weren't the same I ended it with. What was the point? It's not fun if I can't even tell if I'm getting better at the game. I didn't need to be the best Counter-Strike player, but I wanted to play actual Counter-Strike.

However, while this isn't necessarily mutually exclusive, those games that let you run your own servers will actually survive to be seen by future generations, unlike just about every game with matchmaking these days that won't let you run the game in LAN or on a private server. It's possible to have both, but devs don't want to.

Kolanaki OP ,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

I was there. I would prefer to go back to that. At least you’d be able to find communities that have the same idea of what makes the game fun. Random matchmaking sucks donkey dick for making friends.

zergling_man ,

xonotic, sauerbraten, 0ad

PenguinTD ,

I was also there but it’s not a really good system when scale up. If you are from the same era, and if you did not own a clan server, they can kick you out for whatever reason. (Like killing a mod one too many times.) And for competitive games that really doesn’t work well, that’s why old server has that after round auto balancing mod, it shuffles player around base on how they performed. A fake way to try balance the team. Ie. I was kinda decent capper for 3wave ctf, grenade rocket jump and all that. So if opponent doesn’t have a good sniper or also decent enough capper, I can usually win the game even when our team is a bit short on players. Then when auto balancing come around to balance players, it actually make it less balance.(you also can’t dial it too much that you got spawn camped and thus one side of player just quit to find another server.)

And it also not helping if you go to a clan server and the clan all want to stay on the same team. Which often leads to players go in/out frequently.(that’s why later on GameSpy can even show match status so you can choose to join or not.)

A well managed server pool and MMR system helps resolve all those issues, and scale up really well.

PowerSeries ,

And you might even get to know people who visited the same dedicated server, and make friends.

I even got admin access and set up some mods (pyro dodgeball night woo).

Good times.

Omegamanthethird ,

There’s a customs browser in Halo MCC that is essentially that. There are a lot of fun game modes to be found on there.

Fizz ,
@Fizz@lemmy.nz avatar

The problem with non balanced lobbies is that they can be completely wrecked by someone who is more skilled.

Gekkonen , (edited )

This is especially true in games like Starcraft where even the tiniest difference in skill results in a total face stomp.

Kolanaki OP , (edited )
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

This is still an issue with matchmaking systems intended to keep the game balanced in developer controlled servers though, so I don’t know what the relevance is.

Fizz ,
@Fizz@lemmy.nz avatar

Its a lot less of an issue so it’s obviously relevant.

Kolanaki OP ,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

If anything it happens more in the unmoderated matchmaking systems because there are no admins.

Fizz ,
@Fizz@lemmy.nz avatar

Admins do not kick people for being to good. I dont know where you get that idea.

Kolanaki OP ,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

Well I can tell you never actually played in that era, because it did happen. Just on the SLAUGHTERHOUSE TF2 servers, in which I myself was an admin, would kick players who completely dominated a game over to another server where they would fit in better. This was a pretty common practice. Not to mention the admins who power tripped and would kick anyone who killed them too often or claim everyone better than they were was cheating.

hawkwind , to fediverse in Viewing lemmy posts by all tends to be dominated by a few communities
@hawkwind@lemmy.management avatar

A quick, but a little dirty solution for this, would be communities having “tags” in their metadata. This wouldn’t prevent spam, or an accumulation of four trillion tags, but you could easily add “only these tags,” or “not these tags,” to any feed. User objects have metadata that is used like this (as the “bot” flag) already. I’m just familiar enough with the code to know it wouldn’t be a slam dunk, but it’s also not a breaking change or re-write!

Coelacanth ,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

Tags would be great, and a much better way of controlling your feed than blocking communities or instances. Just because I usually don’t want to see memes or shitposts doesn’t mean I’m never in the mood for them. It could also potentially help people who don’t want porn in their feed but want to keep non-porn NSFW visible.

loopgru , to linux in System76 or Framework laptop?

Did FW ever solve the issue with battery drain during sleep? I owned one of the original batch and sold it because I couldn't effectively use it as a laptop. Other than that it was awesome, great build quality, loved the ethics of it and the form factor, but being unable to use it as a portable computer was a deal breaker.

snek_boi ,

I think it improved by changing the HDMI card thingy and with the new processors.

gortbrown ,

I feel like it has gotten better for sure. I use Linux Mint on mine, and while I don’t think it’s quite been “fixed” yet, it’s improved enough to be noticeable.

cass ,

One solution I’ve seen has been to enable “hybrid sleep”, where you can have it sleep for some period of time (30m) and afterward go to hibernate.

I still need to check in on it, but one of the biggest issues with sleep on Framework laptop is that the usb-c adapters (like HDMI) passively draw power. If you use 4 usb-c (or just leave it empty), you have better sleep experience.

kelvie ,

Hibernate is it’s own challenge in Linux right now as lockdown mode doesn’t work with hibernate (and I think a lot of distros use lockdown mode by default for security). I had to patch the kernel to enable this: gist.github.com/…/917d456cb572325aae8e3bd94a9c135…

avidamoeba ,
@avidamoeba@lemmy.ca avatar

I was able to get hibernate working on Ubuntu with a few config changes. I’m using a swapfile which is the default these days and it takes care of security when used on with disk encryption.

avidamoeba ,
@avidamoeba@lemmy.ca avatar

Given that Intel no longer supports S3, hybrid sleep or suspend-then-hibernate is the solution indeed. It works pretty well on my end. I’m using the latter with a 3-hour suspend window. Very rarely I end up cold-booting. Hybrid-sleep is foolproof for those that absolutely can’t tolerate lost state.
