It’s the end point modem+router. It’s like saying removing the landline phone from people’s house without destroy the exchange boxes would cripple communication. It’s not cause they are easily replaced.

PenguinTD ,

I think honestly they might be looking to have their own platform on PC one day to not paying the platform fee.

if they keep using steam backend for part of their PC framework, they will pay a lot more in the end, compare to invest now take some flames and properly push for their account backend on PC WHILE have steam’s market place/distribution work for them.

Don’t get me wrong, Sony already have the capability to server digital contents to all the PS5s, but it’s a closed system and no worry about hacking etc as much compare to PC.

PenguinTD ,

you forget the amount of time needed to bake Quake translucent water patch.

PenguinTD ,

It took me so long to bake all the maps and future map updates from Mods(threewave mostly) and publish on our dorm FTP. People that still play on CPU is at disadvantage for sure.

But after a while anyone that plays 3d game already have one. It basically trickle down to other players. (ie my voodoo1 was sold cheap to one of my friends back then when I got the voodoo2.)

PenguinTD ,

I’m willing to double dip just to roam the world with my ultrawide oled again, I’ve never really touched the coop mode anyway in Ps4 and then later PS5’s remaster. I want to support the studio and I hope the Helldivers 2 event sends Sony a clear enough message. It’s only 2 days in and they will be monitoring metric etc. Remember how well that reddit blackout worked? But this time, steam seems to willing to refund for those delisted countries no issue, so players in those region can hit Sony in the pocket. (and sadly, AH as well. )

PenguinTD ,

well, I am not good but consider I can usually finish all the combo trainings 100% so my execution is quite okay. (I quit fighting game cause the button tapping is quite noisy, so no more fighting game after my son was born. )

  • street fighter have a couple arch type, ryu/ken is shoto and they have actually different play style even though their basics looks similar.
  • for any fighting game the distance that your opponent’s attack can reach is very important. a good player can simply whiff punish you and throw jabbing you because you don’t understand the +/- etc after a blocked/whiffed attack.
  • hit confirm is also important, which means a simple combo that you can start when you have advantage, but not too “negative” when it’s blocked. (training mode can show these info) Where the first 23 hit of your combo is safe and once you get better and landing those 23 hit combo, pick something that allows you to cancel into special moves, knock down or throw(which is also a down). All the more fancy complex combo is not really useful if you can’t even land a 2~3 hit combo on opponent.
  • punishing specific match up’s bad move, ie. a fireball at wrong distance allows opponent to jump in and lands full combo out of it. you have to do training mode a lot and study your match up.
  • and finally, study the neutral game, where both side starts from distance that all normal attacks are out of range, what can you do from that point of space and what opponent’s char can do from their space. If you keep getting beat by opponent’s certain move, rewatch the replay, check their input, record that input to a training dummy, and find what you can do as counter.

It’s a huge time sink and there are also cheaters(on pc specifically), so good luck.

PenguinTD ,

If you only play old games for story mode, the CPU read inputs so you are gonna have a bad time anyway if you don’t exploit their tendencies. Don’t spam fire ball cause I think by the 2nd or 3rd match you start to getting jumped on. In fact, if you know how to do anti air(couch heavy punch from Ken) with proper timing you can beat the run pretty easily except char with command grab.

Like for CPU don’t even try complex input, read on internet for most basic punish(like empty jump in and then throw against zoner) cause throw is really high damage & strong in SF2. If you push them to wall then you do the light punch fireball with some distance to bait them to jump over then do your punish.

PenguinTD ,

if you mean the dive then just standing medium kick with proper spacing, if you are on emu you can snap shot the match or add more token and just practice anti air if it jump and dive from mid distance.

Merge needs some stomp, yeah, mine stomp yours.

edit: note, this is a good thing, cause then we both have unlimited supply of tickets.

PenguinTD ,

thanks lemmy and now I know what it is and doesn’t have to watch. ;)

PenguinTD ,

care to expand on this more? I do know Squad seems to have a quite community split update but since I don’t focus heavy on milsim so I just take whatever youtuber presented and said. ST:E is still EA and judging from the last live stream they seem to bite the bullet hard upgrading to UE5, but engine upgrade is always hard but should pay dividends later down the road. Especially for a EA game, I think the general expectation for game to just blow up fro EA is really odd. Look at say BG3 or Hades during EA, they don’t have that high player count as well even though they are made by more well know devs than Offworld.

PenguinTD ,

I go look up and woah, Squad is almost 10 years old, next year would be it if including EA time. seems received quite okay with recent reviews on steam. DLC seems to be cosmetics only, I guess they need those extra cash from community haha. I don’t remember the mod drama, but if that’s the case the modder can just sue them for sure. (I do know they bought the Australian faction from modder if remembered correctly. )

I do think the ST:E xp wipe is justified and they do manage to keep career xp/level. If not I’d settle with some unique title or decal that only EA people get before 0.7 for their contribution. I mean EA player are basically paying alpha/beta customers that are willing to tolerate big changes/crashes/issues if it’s better for the future release. I think ST:E and Helldivers 2 are fundamentally different games and ST:E is just really rough on the mechanics side(since it was a squad mod originally), I have hope as it’s always one of my fantasy to shoot waves of bug and climb over their bodies since the movie. And just 4 players with orbital strikes doesn’t really fit that scenario of squads getting thrown into meat grinder. (yes, I also wish they can support more > 16 players ) It would be fucking insane if we can play 100 players against thousands of bugs. Actually, I’d settle with 64 as the game mechanism and enemy spawn now can’t sustain that many players doing coop and many player would get nothing to shoot with. well, man can dream, :P

PenguinTD ,

ST:E servers also crash at times so it’s not HD2 only feature. XD

I just want them to get MORE bugs(like way more, I know it’s more than what HD2 currently sustains, but with dedicated server they should be able to do more), MORE player support(>16, preferably have 32/64 players missions), and if bugs can fucking pile up like in movie I’d buy whatever cosmetic they have in store post launch.

If bug spawn is scalable to player count in the mission that would help as well, like a L4D AI director that spawns enemies depending on the difficulty slider and how well they are doing. We will see after today’s update.

PenguinTD ,

I wish that in the future developer can just host their own game with very minimum cost/overhead unless they really need some platform’s backend feature. (multiplayer game mostly.)

For single player game I really don’t see why it is so difficulty to host (even torrent it) would be a hard thing to do. During the shareware/pre-steam days where you may have downloaded the full game with a soft lock, I’ve played a whole game and then try find way to send my money as well. (was not living in NA at that time and there was no guarantee that a game will be imported with official vendor.)

PenguinTD ,

Yeah, but at the same time, people are “NOT” going to pay for it won’t pay for it anyway. You might as well establish your player/fan base. Like even if you give me say, Suicide Squad for free I still won’t add it to my library.

PenguinTD ,

I paid and still get peppered with their promotion. So I stopped paying, then if it gets worse I will uninstall and use the web app as you can block elements with the ad blockers. (so even site hosted stuff you can single out elements to block. )

edit: yeah, unfortunately I can’t really just stop using it entirely, until my regular group server and some of the game’s server move somewhere else.

PenguinTD ,

same, I was interested in the game but until recent video shows a ton of other things that I didn’t know stopped me in the track, reading the reviews didn’t help as well.

  • it has the survival loot shooter with RE inventory management phase which I don’t want to play, like not at all.
  • it has those mundane tasks like filling ammo for turrets etc, which I think doesn’t fit the game type I imagined.
  • it seems to have boring AI issues even during the siege phase so that’s another blow.

I think they have a good game in the beginning but throwing too many other things into the pot.

PenguinTD ,

I refunded D3 after finding out how they gate the auction house and drop weapon level during launch window. Never even tried to get the updated version or D4 at all. Blizzard is dead for me at D3.

PenguinTD ,

I got AC:Odyssey during one of the sale cause I dig Greek mythology, had to get cheat engine and spare me the grind for upgrading gears and ship. Like sure you can just keep picking up randomly dropped Epic/Rare and replacement them when you leveling up(there are even player quest that put in specific spot to give you resource for those upgrades, just so other players can farm it) But I ain’t get any time for that, I just cheat engine in max out resource and upgrade my Legendary gears I found through out the game. And you know what? By the end of the game(and I didn’t find every Legendary, like maybe 60~70% of them) it would take me setting the resource to max twice to fully upgrade all my legendary + epic(with perks I like) gears. It would take probably months of my gaming time should I got it on console and can not use cheat engine.

No, upgrade gear is not required to finish the game. But after this experience I decides to never get another Ubisoft AC game nor any RPG on console or with always online feature(which means all transaction are done and authenticated to prevent cheating. ) I’ve done plenty open world, RPG, Monster Hunters without having to cheat. But the recent single player grinding + selling time saver booster pack make me whip out the cheat engine again. And I only cheat those stupid resource gating game that are designed to pad hours in to your play through.

PenguinTD ,

Yeah, they know they are doing though, they are aiming for those that work 9-5 have life and kids and some spare changes and milk them hard. Like this game would take 200 hours to complete fully with X hundreds of hours of post game content that was designed to make your grind, but you can also pay for this [xp booster, resource pack, legendary set, etc] to make sure you can enjoy the post game content if you don’t have the time to grind the game how it’s “meant to be played”.

In my AC:Odessey example, I think at one point the designer might be doing a heavy zelda influenced where you just pick up stuff enemies dropped and the blacksmiths are there for you to repair items broken as resource dump. (which make sense and very fitting of that era and how resource would work) But once that MTX department put their finger in now you have a derailed system. There is a spread sheet that list the hours required to upgrade a legendary piece to which level, and recommended level to get them(as their starting level is fixed and not like the enemy droppped item that matches your level), I saw the numbers and downloaded the cheat engine table the next hour.

PenguinTD ,

Because FSR3 is really new, released Sep 2023. Even the games that actually can patch in FSR3 didn’t get to do it properly until Avatar nailed it and just earlier this month released another update to push it further. In short, AMD is working with devs to improve their plugin integration to various engine devs, and I don’t think 3.1 is the “end goal”.

FSR 3’s result really depends on how developer understand and work with the proposed render pipeline compare to DLSS(which basically runs AI kernal to guess what pixel values to fill). Especially with games that features pip scope(fake UI scopes with on the fly fov changes are fine) or some translucent elements where it can not do the velocity buffer properly. (basically most of the fringeness on edge or flickering/swimming are mostly from precision, and ghosting are from wrong velocity when you see the old FSR artifacts).

PenguinTD ,

It’s probably some glitch due to the performance settings for PS5/Xbox series X and then porting to PC. Chances are if modern CPU we try to limit the max core available to the game the performance would become better then letting it use full cores.

Plus, whatever anti-cheat/anti-modding stuff they put on the PC.

PenguinTD ,

old.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/…/kvqq87k/

the reviewer from Eurogamer has a 7700X(which has exactly 8 cores like PS5) had pretty good performance review, which kinda match what I guessed.

PenguinTD ,

I know, it’s that they probably have the console optimization left in so any CPU that’s not 8 cores might get the short end of the stick. We will see how quickly capcom can patch that.

PenguinTD ,

source: gpuopen.com/fidelityfx-super-resolution-3/

FSR Quality preset for 1080p only render at 720p, while DLSS Quality render at whatever next available resolution the fits so it would likely render at 1600x900. It is possible to render with Ultra Quality preset similar to what Avatar developer made at 1.2x upscale, but it does not come in standard. The video have over half of benchmarking using outdated version(only 2 on FSR3) and comparing pretty much different tech. Anyone with decent enough graphics tech knowledge knows it will not have good result with FSR since it does not doing use AI to help filling the missing pixels. AI is surprisingly good when doing upscaling and filling in the details( if you know what those image generator do at internal res and keep upscaling and tweaking the images), while shader solution relies on input information for better work. Means, if the input frame rate or resolution is too low, it’s not gonna work as intended. (similar to the newer optical flow frame gen also rely on frame rate being stable for better frame gen result. )

You don’t have to like AMD nor FSR’s result, but comparing result while ignoring the implementation detail and what are the techs are for is like comparing beer and scotch and then complain why scotch doesn’t give you the burp.

PenguinTD ,

I mean I can abandon HDMI if not for consoles to only supporting HDMI output. Like how many people still trying to rip dvd or blueray through a console??

PenguinTD ,

there seems to be a black screen driver bug or something for the windows sleep power management function that plague quite a bit spectrum of cards. In my case it’s not DP but when my GPU go sleep on older system, it just can’t wake up anymore.(both monitor, one DP one HDMI) that includes the shorter auto sleep mode when you lock the computer.

My newer system doesn’t have that issue even with the same monitor/port. So it must be something like BIOS for MB/monitor/GPU and system all together that the protocol from say, windows and GPU is updated, but the MB or the monitor is not. Unfortunately, I can’t get any more newer BIOS for my old 4+ years AM4 MB nor for the 3+yo monitor. I simply disable the monitor sleep function and all is good, I just need to turn off monitor manually.

PenguinTD ,

Yes, it’s fixed both on their tech upgrade backend and naturally(with slight player count decline. )

PenguinTD ,

cause commercial rental is a commitment, if you can’t find another company to take over your lease, chances are you have to pay the majority of left over amount + penalty + restoration. Licensor commitments are similar but probably on tech/software licensing, ie. server rentals, Maya/Speedtree licensing agreement for the site, whatever cloud service they use for backup and share stuff, etc. Those at bigger scale aren’t paid year to year like your regular indie studio just subscribe to Adobe/Autodesk for app uses per seat.

PenguinTD ,

Yeah, make it part of the build like FSR3 is better cause whitelist external DLLs doesn’t work.(creates entry point to read your game’s memory)

PenguinTD ,

Newer fluid motion thing does work for older and card though. But FSR3 would be better cause it has direct frame buffer information.

PenguinTD ,

As with anywhere else on internet, if you see a link you are not familiar or trust the source, do not follow.

If your curiosity is really killing you, put that link into a sandboxed browser.

PenguinTD ,

They gone viral and try to use their viral power to push as much to gain the capitals back. Yes it’s not healthy and it could all go south really quickly if they don’t manage it well. Viral go up and boom quickly but to sustain it is hard. You need actual good game loop and mechanics to keep player coming back for content drip.(assuming not live service game.)

PenguinTD ,

I think they are just riding the wave, I did not know them, I saw the waves of marketing attempts but survival crafting genre is never my thing. (I had my fill during the Don’t Starve/Subnautica time, and unfortunately I do not like them as game mechanism. ) I still didn’t even checked the gameplay videos even though they pop on my youtube feed.

We will see in about 2 months and see how many still playing Palworld, if they can still keep 40% of their peak number then their loop is good enough to keep player engaged. (roughly similar decline happened after Baldur’s Gate 3’s peak.)

PenguinTD ,

I wonder what happen to just plain old player trades? Aka, join same server lobby, invite to trade or drop on the floor to show the stat and then specifically agree to give to another player in a trading window.

Right, the devs gets nil in this type of transaction, even though it could really help players engaged.

I can almost guarantee that if a dev include a “tip the developer” option(no dark pattern, basically you buy some premium credit and use it as tip with minimum amount like a quarter), people would be guilt tripped to the moon and have to press that button once in a while. (Basically like the wikipedia funding request, I got guilt tripped easily. )

PenguinTD ,

lol, internet point vs damage he has to pay up.

PenguinTD ,

Very simple math if if the numbers we saw spamming the past 2 days are accurate. Unique Player count * unit sale price = gross revenue.

PenguinTD ,

Yeah, the title is pretty much just written that way to have that shock factor.

PenguinTD ,

As AMD owner that has experienced this issue, the black screen crash is manageable for some symptoms and very likely not AMD’s fault. And it’s NOT just 7000 series, it’s happened to Nvidia card as well if you search for the “Nvidia black screen crash”.

Disclaimer, not all crashes in that link you posted is related to the same cause, trust me because I did my home work when my 6800XT experienced the black crash. Specifically, mine is the monitor sleep crash(can’t wake monitor up anymore but can hotkey reboot and sometimes goes into boot loop after a system critical error(have to cold shutdown unplug psu power cycle and then reconnet) usually around mid night update time.

What I found how to fix my issue is that there is an old version of driver that does not have this issue at all. Use that for quite a bit of time until someone else report more stability for a different version of driver then I tried again. But then I got tired of stuck at older version driver and experiment around, found that don’t put screen to sleep and don’t “lock” your windows(keep the windows at desktop and not lock it remove that black screen crash issue that I have. ** important, this is very different crash than the playing game and crash to black screen, which is much easily addressed as most that run into this(that I saw during my hunt to fix my issue) have bad component or PSU not good enough. **

And, my new rig also full amd setup does not suffer the same issue at all with desktop lock or monitor sleep after 15mins.

old rig: 6800XT amd stock, auros master MB, 3900X new rig: 7900XTX Merc, msi B650 MB, 7800X3D

Yes, I’ve done firmware updates and everything. You might be wondering, why I said it might not be AMD’s fault after I said there is a version of old driver that does not have this issue. My reasoning is like this. The older version of driver probably did not implement some more modern power saving or whatever inter device communication protocols that leads to the crash thus aren’t triggering it. The why it’s seems so wide spread is because it could be triggered and happen when one of the component can’t return and communicate with the system properly. That means, in my case more power management related issue:

  • the MB bios regarding power policy issues.
  • windows driver/kernel that manage power policy( I don’t think I’ve seen any post that have this black screen crash on Linux)
  • monitor bios and the connections
  • display driver and protocols responding to the requests(windows have to go through GPU to ask monitor to go sleep)

See how many points of failure this could happen? Now think about how most people use their hardware and upgrades? ie.

  • how many people upgrade their graphic card and then check if their MB/Monitor firmware is up to date??
  • how many people keeps delaying driver updates or windows updates??
  • how many manufacturer stops updating firmware for their older MB/Monitor?? (I pretty much suspicious of my Acer 144hz 4k IPS panel for causing the crash, cause at the time I was investigating, the monitor’s firmware is already old enough, from 2021, just went back to check again and still the same version.)

I hope my information show that it’s manageable and not a hard problem to get around. And actually running into this is pretty rare as there aren’t a lot of thread and not really “wide” spread.

PenguinTD ,

great, now I know it could happen. :')

Good luck, it plagues me for a brief period of time, about 2 week, imagine everyday you wake up and hear that boot loop fan spin up and down and scratch your head why has this happened. Almost drive me to replace components but I calm down and nail it in the end(cause the exact same combo has worked for about 2+ years before this happened after a driver update). But that’s my exact batch of components and software combo, it may not work for you.

Like I mentioned in my post, my issue is strictly related to the power saving state related function that leads to the crash and boot loop. During the time of insanity, I’ve never encounter any crash to black screen while playing games or other normal use of my PC, I can reboot or shutdown/boot up normally for things like windows update or other software update that requires reboot.

From what I can gather before, if you have the normal use crash, or 3D gaming use crash, chances are it’s one of your component that aren’t the good batch. You can dig into some of the threads that OP’s posted and you will see some of them eventually resolved by replacing stuff, or remove auto OC from bios or from the driver. If you have a newly built PC make sure you do these component rule out thing asap as modern return/replacement window is really tight. (ie. Canada Computer only 15 days.)

PenguinTD ,

in the tech spec, it list 330W power adapter, so it’s could be laptop GPU chip not the desktop one.(as desktop 4070 usually recommends 650W psu)

CPU’s power usage like this from intel’s spec page:

  • Processor Base Power 45 W
  • Maximum Turbo Power 115 W
  • Minimum Assured Power 35 W
  • Maximum Assured Power 65 W

Desktop 4070 is max about 200W + some transient draw peaking, laptop 4070 is 35 - 115 Watt from what I can find.

PenguinTD ,

Hate to say this but what a big blob of BS because the ownership class find out pretty early that if no one else is making money to buy the shits they make, they can’t make more money. (We will skip the pre 1900 slavery scenario, as they can just force you to work and just keep you alive is enough as slaves are “production equipment” like cows/horses. )

People generate value if they do or make something other people want, currency invented to cover that value gap so supply, demand, skill and rarity, efficiency and many different quality of your work/product/service decides how many $ you get when people want your service. At least, that’s how it all should be in equal footing. But since money == power when the scale goes up, since ancient time successful merchants holds a lot influence in politics and cause unbalance in wealth distribution. They can only push it so far until they get hunting down and stuff taken, but usually by other influential political/business figures that does the raids.

Having said the above, a lot of small and medium scale business owners values their employees a lot, especially those that truly have the skill set that compliments their business. And, do I need to remind you to do a bit of study of history, the invention of machines, tele-communication and then the boom of computers(especially general purpose ones), yet global population keeps going up and up instead of all starved to death cause the jobs these past things replaced?

And, just to do a quick review of how much people hates the automated phone support menu system transition from traditional to modern voice recognition ones. Or how many internet goer hates the auto generated useless pages plague our search result and provide nothing useful, waste our time click and read just to serve some ads? Yeah, like many worried before, what if computer replaced our jobs? Well, they need people to make the computer work. AI isn’t going to be fully automated and self improve, we are pretty far from that. many successful model needs guided training, and usually prevents additional feedback into the system to avoid degrading the performance.

PenguinTD ,

think about this the other way, if your favorite dev gets bought, all their funding members gets good pay out and can keep working on the games you like “until” the parent company don’t think it works and shuts it down. Then those funding member either peace out and fund new studios with new IPs(sometimes multiple stuidos spawned after a big studio has massive layoff.) Those new studio will then get funding and absorb those that lost their job and becoming the funding member of those new studios.

It’s a healthy cycle for the industry really. Let the investor dump more money to the developers I don’t mind. I don’t even mind if we lost some of our loved franchisees, as we’ve all survived that with EA’s acquisitions during the 90-00s. And guess what, that massive buying and fucking with existing studios indirectly spawn off the indie boom that comes a couple years later in the early 2010s.

Have the trust in the developers that have passion to bring you the games you like.

PenguinTD ,

Many indie games that from “veteran devs of” are still using whatever tools they were familiar with. Like yes I am aware of the unity wave, by lumping them all together is kinda unfair. Especially, you mentioned Japan, many of top talents open their own studio before Kojima. Most recent is Kamiya’s departure from Platinum, it would be silly to say that Kamiya won’t be able to make games if engines like unity or ue4/5 aren’t available.

I for one are willing to let old IP die and not keeping coming back in different forms of remaster/remake/reboot.(with the exception of proper remakes like RE2.) A lot of man hours dump into those games and their talents won’t get recognized as they are living under the shadow of past great games. (And they get pennies owns not the IPs nor the fames for those game world/mechanism/vision.)

I want they to pour their precious time making good quality new games instead of churning more and more remasters/remakes.

PenguinTD ,

All the butt hurt people watching their old GPU getting obsolete. Just do some quick google of “is 8GB vram enough” and there are so many break downs out there so I won’t get into details. PS4 is a joke comparison cause switch have even less ram and still there are games making to run on it. (like the newer Prince of Persia). Anyway, old GPUs days are numbered because of low VRAM and lack of mesh shader compatibility. Nvidia is basically doing a how stupid can the market go test.

PenguinTD ,

Your argument is like, “why didn’t iphone release 16 but with 8gb storage and newest chip but cheaper cause I don’t take photo video and never use more than 2GB storage anyway.” These are “niche” side of spectrum that happen to like your product, do you open a new line just for them and break your own sales strategy? Or you stick with your own plan and see how much margin you can still keep? Like how Nvidia did with this one? Cause Nvidia has been doing this for quite some time, under equip the vram amount/bandwidth and still charge premium money. Especially with the 50/60 series and then it bleeds to higher end cards when compare to AMD equivalent.

The remarkable claim(even though fake) said “640KB ram is enough for anyone”. Sounds familiar?

PenguinTD ,

Disclaimer: I fully support universal basic income even though I am in the higher tax bracket. Because of people needs buffer during those mass layoff(in case where unemployed benefit doesn’t really cover basic living cost) and disabled/retired people without support.

Modern computer tech trend is based on 4 basics:

  • more instructions run per second
  • smaller size
  • more operating(ram/vram)/storage space
  • use less energy per TFLOP

Not all newer release gets all 4 checked but that’s the goal. Computer component actually have longer life spam compare to all other tech gadget that comes with processor. In example, your 970 is released 10 years ago 2014, and during this period of time, I am on my 4th phone not because I chase newer one, but because the battery degradation and I happen to had a nexus that battery died after a year. Average shelf life of modern phone battery is around 3~5 years. The thing is, as a video game developer myself, we are constantly struggle with that power creep as well. (steam hardware survey helped a lot honestly.)

  • do we use the newer features? new example would be mesh compute shader which some older cards doesn’t have those circuits. By using some newer feature you automatically cut away certain population that owns older hardware. (SpiderMan 2 is PS5 exclusive
  • do we support older hardware? what can we cut to still maintain our vision and craft quality. (ie, we can’t push so far that low spec become a ps1 era game, it’s simply not feasible and actually the art dept will hunt you down. )
  • how do we balance the game for low to ultra spec. (ie. in FPS, there are cheats to disable bush or grass rendering, but make grass/bush not render helped frame rate a lot, thus if you allow it ultra spec people still play at low grass settings for better visibility. If you disallow it then your min spec needs to bump up to support the minimum amount your game needs to render. )

So it’s not really why game developer no longer wants to make game compatible with older hardware, there are plenty retro style or clever use of graphic that can still run on older hardware. It’s ultimate the time/cost and return of investment calculation. We don’t work for computer component manufacturer, we survey the market, see how we can make games up to our standard and try to reach as many potential customer. It’s the same for all other software based companies. And for smaller company that can’t afford to build their own engine, when you use Unreal or Unity, even without putting anything into the game, it already comes with a min spec before you build your first prototype just to support say, rendering 1 light and 1 square ground plane. And anything you then put into the game will slowly churn away the HW budget(storage, ram/vram, frame time).

Like you, many companies simply wants to make money and survive, as they aren’t really big enough to make any of those decisions. (like the average battery shelf life)

PenguinTD ,

I think you read my comment the wrong way. Maybe I really suck at explain concept but here is my another attempt. Nvidia, like Apple have established mid-high end foot hold in terms of market share. They exploit that position by making product tiers you either pay up or go to the “inferior” brand. So even their “budget” card is really not up to the task if your Runescape player got hyped up one day by some trailer and saw the requirement in Rtx 3060 for min spec, “oh, my 3050 should still be able to run it” and boom reality check. (And maybe go back to runescape after getting disappointed and/or ask for refund since game runs like shit at minimum settings.)

It’s a trap product unless you are fully aware of what it can do and specifically acquire it for specific build(say, a retro console emu build that let you run games up to like WiiU/Xbox360). And you have way better option either in used market or the Intel arc is better than this crap.

For people with no budget to even buy a slightly future proof GPU, making this kind of purchase is worse than just go buy used ps4 or Xbox one from Craigslist/fb market place and still get a ton of games that usually come with the console.
