Mastodon is good. But I find Calckey more appealing for average “Twitter user”. Again, it’s only my personal opinion

Fake4000 , to nostupidquestions in Lemmy vs kbin?

I had the same question as well. I understand that both can federate and share posts and comments. Still looking for a definitive answer to this question though.

SomeoneElse ,

I think it comes down to personal preference. Like messaging apps - iMessage, WhatsApp, telegram, Facebook messenger etc etc. They all send messages. As long as you have someone’s phone number you can message them on whichever app you prefer.

My family use WhatsApp, my in laws use telegram, I use iMessage. There’s no rhyme or reason to it, it’s just what people prefer in terms of UI, privacy etc.

Kierunkowy74 , to nostupidquestions in How to create a decentralized kind of wiki?
@Kierunkowy74@kbin.social avatar

Wikis serve mainly lurkers, and federation of these sites does not matter much for them. The main advantage of wiki federation would be ability to edit several wikis under the same account. However, you can achieve the same effect with OAuth (that is, logging to many sites with the same account on another one).

Infrapink ,
@Infrapink@kbin.social avatar

And even that is unnecessary if the wiki in question allows anonymous editing.

fidodo , (edited ) to showerthoughts in Lemmy is so good right now for no particular reason

I think it’s because these are actual communities. The admins are just regular people you can talk to like normally. You choose your community. They’re not faceless corporations and I think when a network is a corporation the platform gets less respectful conversation for understandable reasons.

@Curious_Canid@lemmy.world avatar

I had never thought about this. (Of course, I’m a rightie.) It’s fascinating how many things like this we take for granted.

ReaderTunesOctopus OP ,

The worst things are fountain pens. My parents told me I can’t write with them properly because I’m lame. It turned out 30 years later that those are for right hand only by design, and only top quality ones write properly if you push it on the paper. Of course we didn’t have one of those.

Curious_Canid ,
@Curious_Canid@lemmy.world avatar

Ouch.

My father is left-handed and has a lot of similar stories. Things are slightly better these days than they were in his time, but the world is still designed for the right-handed.

ReaderTunesOctopus OP ,

I used to have an evil plan to marry another leftie, set up the household with left handed stuff and mess with every visitor. Although at this point I probably couldn’t use a left handed can opener any more

MomSpaghetti , to youshouldknow in YSK: If you're on Lemmy.World or Sh.itjust.works you should not subscribe to any Beehaw communities

The first post I came across from another instance was on Beehaw. It was very confusing trying to figure out the federation concept with that community being my first visit.

IsThisLemmyOpen , to nostupidquestions in So how long until the Fediverse is monetized?

I think if a instance owner decides to try to profit, it can happen. They could let advertisers have an account that promotes products and allow such posts to bypass community rules and disregard vote counts. You could theoretically profit from running a lemmy instance. But now your instance risks defederation and user might start leaving.

Edit: I think the smarter thing could be just asking for more donations than is needed to run the server, and pocket the excess funds. That could go on undetected as long as you falsify your operating costs to make it seem as if more funding is required. I mean I don’t know if someone could actually make a living of asking for absurd amounts of donations.

Why do you want to create a user there? I imagine it will reopen eventually, but you are likely much better off creating a user elsewhere.

Ipodjockey OP ,
@Ipodjockey@lemmy.world avatar

I'm using the liftoff app and I can't upvote posts that originate from lemmy.ml.

flip ,
@flip@lemmy.nbsp.one avatar

That sounds odd, can you upvote posts when you are using the web interface or another app?

Ipodjockey OP ,
@Ipodjockey@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah it's just happening in liftoff. Viewing through chrome works fine.

falconfetus8 ,

That's because liftoff aggregates posts from multiple instances on its own, rather than relying on instances "federating" with each other. The benefit of this is that it gives you control of what instances you see content from, rather than the instance owners deciding for you.

Personally, I think that makes way more sense than making instances "federate" with each other to share content. The only interoperability instances really need is the ability to post to communities that are hosted on other instances. We don't need instances to be sending the entirety of all their content to each other; clients can aggregate that on their own.

nosut ,
@nosut@lemmy.world avatar

That would be a bug on liftoff. Report it there instead of trying to make another account.

!liftoff

falconfetus8 ,

It's not a bug, just bad UX. Liftoff aggregates content from multiple instances on its own, rather than viewing other instances "through" the one you're logged into. It allows you to log into multiple accounts at once to compensate, but it's definitely not how fediverse sites are "supposed" to work.

IMO, all liftoff needs to do is check if the post you're viewing is from an instance that federates with an instance you have an account on. If it is, then it should automatically route your comment "through" the instance you have an account with, and make that transparent to the user.

nosut ,
@nosut@lemmy.world avatar

Also you should be viewing content via lemmy.world not directly on Lemmy.ml. that's how federation works.

As you can see here this is what you see if you are just on lemmy.ml https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/86f2b1e2-dd2a-48c6-b6f9-54146680ca5e.jpeg

If you are on lemmy.world and viewing content you see: https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/4d489e30-48c2-49ff-9a60-6f716f7406d2.jpeg

Ipodjockey OP ,
@Ipodjockey@lemmy.world avatar

I thought you could exist as a user on any instance and they are all interconnected? Unless they defederate for some reason.

nosut ,
@nosut@lemmy.world avatar

Your user login only works on your instance. Any instance that is federated with your instance you can interact with through your instance. You cant interact with a different instance directly.

Which is why in the screenshots above You cant vote on the first one since that is interacting directly with lemmy.ml. However you can interact with the second because you are interacting with lemmy.ml through lemmy.world

eating3645 , to selfhosted in help with seeding on qBittorrent and Gluetun?

The best way to troubleshoot your setup is to test each bit by bit individually until you figure out where it’s gone wrong.

Try your qbit container without glutun. Can you download and seed a Linux iso from the same directory your current seeds are? If not, you’re probably looking at a permissions issue.

Next test your glutun container. Can you ping the tracker from the container? If not, your VPN isn’t set up correctly.

Lastly try qbit via glutun, if it doesn’t work it’s a port forwarding issue.

Good luck!
