Aren’t those the ones that have one gearing and just jump the RPMs up by rotating the vanes or something? All torque converter and no gearbox? Sorry if I’m way off base, I possess only approximate knowledge of many things.
It had gears but yeah it was fluidically controlled like all automatics of that era. There is plenty of info online about it. Even Rolls Royce bought them from GM and used them in their cars.
Oh I have no doubt it must have been a step forward in the development of hydraulics in transmissions, you need only look at the black magic box that is modern slush-automatics to see that (not to mention that fully hydraulic final drives are a mature system in military vehicles, where ungodly maintenance demands just come with the territory). Unfortunately my knowledge of anything I haven’t worked on myself (and that’s a very, very limited window of experience) comes down largely to pop-culture and meme content. I’m fairly certain Regular Car Reviews discussed a car with that transmission and what you get is more of a piss-take than a true walk through the operating principles.
The THM 350 was a durable transmission, the 400 was built like a tank, and the later cost reduced 200 was a piece of crap that broke all the time and resulted in a class action lawsuit. Maybe the 200 is what you were thinking of. The demand for used 350’s and 400’s was basically from owners of failed 200’s.

I would third control. I picked it up from the Humble female protagonist bundle and it was fantastic, loved everything about it.
Once you unlock all the powers the combat and exploration really open up, and the game still has a significant bit of story left giving you time to have some fun with them.
Also loved the environmental lore, all the notes and the vids with Dr. Darling are great. Highly recommend the game.
Amazing game, definitely one of my all-time favorites and the most fun I've had with a combat system. The atmosphere of the game is fantastic as well, pulling so much tension out of every new supernatural office space you discover. I'm absolutely thrilled they confirmed a Control 2 recently, I can't wait to get back into that world with all its lore to discover. I feel like I need to play Alan Wake now too since they're connected.
Alan Wake is pretty interesting from a female perspective, because it's a male hero but it's good a pretty good female supporting character in the Sheriff and the plot with Alice is really interesting in light of the idea of fridging. Also, the sequel will have a second playable protagonist that's a woman.
If anything, DB0 probably shouldn’t. Only break 1 law at a time. Rights-holders would love to use anti-terrorism, anti-drug, or whatever other laws to take down a piracy site
Yeah, those are very good concerns, and in his position (I understand the instance is named after it’s admin), I would be wary. But he pays the operating costs and he opens himself to liability, which means the decision is his to make. I can only say it’s the one instance I know of that seems to be leaning into the spirit of self-determination through self-hosting.
Well, it’s not illegal to talk about buying drugs online, right? I think the legal implications are much smaller than people think, especially with Lemmy still being pretty niche. But I’ll probably try hosting on a smaller instance and see how it goes.
Lemmy may be niche but it’s extremely easy to monitor. There’s a fine line between discussion and facilitation. It’s all a matter of how risk adverse you are.
I was promised the fediverse was a lawless place where we could discuss whatever we wanted. What I’m now hearing is that I’ll need to find somewhere else to discuss my plans for genetically engineered mice, one with a 9th level genius, and the other somewhat insane?
Discussion on a topic is not illegal imo. If anything it’s actuallly good, as if you’re gonna do something anyway, it’s best to have information on it.
Abstinence or lack of sex-ed doesn’t solve anything. The war on drugs solved nothing. Information saves lifes.
I use graphineOS and even then my work profile is fully Googled, the reason for this is so many things in proptairy apps depend on Google Play, most notable being notifications.
It IS monetized - right now by donations/crowdfunding.
What we need is for people to be more open to supporting what they want via micro-payments, regular donations, because that’s the way to say NO to advertising which brings in virtually no income for the amount of time and bandwidth it consumes.
Imagine 5 instances, all federated with each other. That means each instance maintains one connection to each of the other 4 instances, and there are 25 connections in total.
One of those instances is bigger than all of the other four combined, and it’s struggling to keep up. In one 5-minute window, there are 300 messages to send to each of the other servers, or 1200 messages. These messages are all of new posts, new subscriptions, new commenta, new up/down votes, new edits, new deletes, and new mod actions. The server only has resources to send maybe 800 or 1000 messages to the other four instances, so the last 200 get queued.
And then the next 5-minute window opens with 1200 MORE messages. Except we still have the 200 messages from that last window to clear. Evertthng else being equal, at the end of THIS window we might have 400 messages queued. So on and so forth, more messages get queued and the goal posts recede faster than the speed of light. Eventually the server runs of of queue, and messages (at best) get dropped. Ultimately tjenserver crashes and restarts and those messages in the queue get lost. (There’s an announcement on the main page)
Lemmy.world.is that big server, and its subscriber instances are getting inconsistent updates because Lemmy.world’s server is resource starved from the massive influx of new users and traffic this weekend.
Have patience. It’ll smooth out, but it will take time.
Currently on a factory game kick, so I’m playing Factorio and planning to get Dyson Space Program afterward. There was also a REALLY good abstract factory game I used to play on the Ubuntu software market but I can’t remember what it’s called.
