I use it as a last resort backup for things that are worth the recall price if I lose them

Social media need regulating like it’s gambling imo

Most people aren’t gonna download a VPN or sideload an app and try and get on TikTok again. One things for sure, an awful lot of the ones who try are gonna end up downloading malware

Banning companies who share their data with the wrong government instead of them I guess

It’s like when steam added group chats and discord added games

Docker still makes sense on your own hardware. Especially if you’re the type of person to try out different programs often

I tried this but I always end up with tea leaves floating around my cup

Cloudflare Alternative

What do you guys use to expose private IP addresses to the web? I was using the npm proxy manager with Cloudflare CDN. However, it stopped working after I changed my router (I keep getting error 521). Looking for an alternative to Cloudflare cdn so I can access my media server/self-hosted services away from LAN....

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Zerotier, although it’s similar to tailscale so you might have issues with it too

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

+1 for buzzkill in general though, it’s a good app

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Yeah. To keep up with friends/family

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Pretty sure it’s Samsung specific

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

I’ve done it with docker swarm and it was awful, the connection latency would break the cluster constantly

@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Some people have to jump through a lot of moral hoops to justify piracy instead of accepting there could be any possible bad points about it

Audiophiles don’t listen to music, they listen to their headphones

Aw man I really liked it as a concept

I’m fairly certain PETA is funded by the meat industry to discredit animal rights activists

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

This is the only actually good use of LLMs I can really think of. As long as there is a good way to keep them within the bounds of the actual story it would be great for that

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Why do you need to open a port if its listening locally?

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

But what firewall blocks that by default?

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

OP said that the port wasn’t open, unless they meant the port was already in use rather than the port was closed?

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Normally I purposefully don’t click on articles with AI generated images, this one was so bad I thought it was a really bad photoshop instead

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Yeah, there’s companies out there literally destroying the planet or causing deaths and consumers don’t care. They’re not gonna stop using their shiny rectangle over this

When I was rooting/flashing custom ROMs I was spending a lot of time tinkering or debugging issues. I could deal with forgoing bank apps, Netflix, etc but I stopped in the end after cyanogenmod had an issue that meant emergency calls would soft reboot the phone. It made me realise my phone was an appliance not a hobby, I need to be able to rely on it and not be wondering if something won’t work because of the ROM I have installed or because it’s rooted.

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Possibly, the last time I flashed an OS was 2019 and I lost a lot of features that i had on the stock rom and had a lot of battery life and lag issues.

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

As far as I’m aware you don’t need a seperate VPS if you’re using tailscale, or you don’t need tailscale of you use a reverse proxy via a vps. You can just host it in the same place you’re hosting the games and apps.

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

You still need a reverse proxy just doesn’t need to be on a seperate server. If you want to do it without people having to install something, you may be able to use cf tunnels for the web pages but game servers definitely don’t work through that and you’d have to have some sort of external forwarding. Keep in mind though that will introduce possibly an unacceptable amount of lag to the server.

about to fly, online check-in and downloading the qr code and boarding pass to my phone

This post is going to sound very similar to my last one, but now I only want to make sure I can check-in online from my desktop, download both the qr code and boarding pass as a pdf file to my phone and then either board the plane showing my phone with the pdf boarding pass to the agent or use my phone and the pdf qr code with...

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Is that illegal? Aren’t they offering it to you for free? It’s definitely immoral but probably not illegal.

peter , (edited )
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

This is shitty, but genuinely I have no idea why people root or run custom ROMs these days. I haven’t found an actual use for it since about 2015

Edit: plenty have people have given me fair enough reasons now, thanks

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

I was speaking for myself, I have no idea why people do it. Didn’t say there aren’t legitimate reasons, I just don’t know any of them

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

I had my note 8 for longer than security updates existed so I installed lineageOS on it, it got security updates but lost a ton of other features and became buggy and slow. Maybe with other phones the experience is better.

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Well Linux is an entire different OS which comes with its own benefits. Rooting makes it a lot more difficult to use apps that use safetynet so doing it because “why not” rather than for a specific benefit doesn’t make sense to me

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

My usage of my phone is different from the usage of devices I specifically install Linux on.

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

I guess that’s a fair reason. I hadn’t really considered that because I don’t personally care too much

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

I don’t care to enhance it any further from the default experience, especially with the downsides

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

What I do on my PC and what I do on my phone are different. Above all the most important feature of my phone is that it works reliably, not that I can tinker or install mods

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

That’s fair, but yeah I don’t really care for that. I can understand why someone would though

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

I don’t want a different experience, I know you can install different Linux OSes on your phone but that’s not what I use my phone for. Last I checked Ubuntu touch barely worked too.

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Can be quite a bit buggier than stock, can be difficult or impossible to use some apps. You can lose some stock features sometimes. You can spend a lot of time debugging issues.

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Different uses for a phone then I guess. To me my phone is an appliance like my washing machine. I want it to work when I need it to and be reliable.

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Maybe getting out of fixed leases?

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Why pay for hosting a static site at all when github, cloudflare etc offer free hosting

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Does netlify not let you set a spend limit?

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

But can you set a limit to stop it going above the free tier

What's a simple logging service?

Hiya, I’m looking to keep track of my different services in hosting via Unraid. Right now I’m hosting roughly 12 different services, but would be nice to have the logs of all my services in one place, preferably with a nice GUI. Are there any such services that could easily connect to the different docker containers I have...

peter ,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Install promtail on the system where you want to get the logs from, then configure it with the paths to the log files and the address of the loki server
