PapaStevesy , to asklemmy in How do I pronounce "Kamala"?

However she pronounces it.

Isoprenoid ,

Right right right

and that would be … ?

Oh, I found the video on her Youtube channel literally addressing this question back in 2016:

PapaStevesy ,

and that would be … ?

…the correct pronunciation.

Isoprenoid ,

Did you read the rest of my post? You can’t say “correctly pronounce it”, and then not give instruction. That doesn’t help anyone.

PapaStevesy ,

If the video specifically made to teach you how to pronounce her name didn’t help, what makes you think I can?

null ,

You didn’t link to that video.

PapaStevesy ,

I never said I did.

null ,

You referred to it retroactively.

PapaStevesy ,

Yes, because to refer to it in any other way would have required precognition, which I unfortunately lack. My bad?

null ,

That’s… exactly the point…

PapaStevesy ,

That I don’t have precognition? Ok good, glad I could help you make that point! In the future, you can just assume everyone you meet lacks precognition, because it’s not real. I know that sounds almost like it’s own form of precognition, but it’s not, it’s just good reasoning.

null ,

Nope, not that.

PapaStevesy ,

Oh, ok good!

null ,

Nope.

PapaStevesy ,

That’s subjective. It’s good for me!

null ,

Incorrect.

PapaStevesy ,

Your original post tells us to pronounce it the way she says it, but doesn’t actually show us how she says it.

How did you expect us to pronounce it correctly if we haven’t heard her say it?

PapaStevesy ,

Your original post tells us to pronounce it the way she says it, but doesn’t actually show us how she says it.

Because I’m not her. You figured it out and found a video on your own, you clearly didn’t need me. Why would I know better than her how to pronounce it?

How did you expect us to pronounce it correctly if we haven’t heard her say it?

I didn’t. I presumed that if someone cared enough, they would find an appropriate video; that presumption was proven correct. But I never expected anyone to do anything, certainly not to get so incredibly butt-hurt by mild sarcasm.

I’ll take a Payless Shoes. Usually at one of the ends, sort of tucked away. Good bit of space, and quick access to the parking lot.

Oh yeah, like 90% of that parking lot can get repurposed into a park. Throw a bus stop in there.

AFC1886VCC , to asklemmy in What is a product you would never recommend?

Any Skullcandy headphones. Shit quality. They just break

Any AmazFit smartwatches. They look okay and have good battery life (for smartwatches). They’re shit in every other way.

theshatterstone54 ,

Any Skullcandy Headphones… they just break

I’ve had 3 pairs of them so far. First one held up really well (I think it was their cheapest model), until the connection got a bit shitty. Second pair, the Casette, lasted for about 2-3 years, until it broke around the side. (y’know, the weakpoint of any pair of headphones?). I’m on a Hesh Evo rn and have no complaints currently. That is subject to change, however, as I’ve only had them for less than a year.

What headphones would you recommend? From what I’ve seen, they all have a weakpoint, making them susceptible to breakage pretty easily.

Loulou ,

Sennheiser makes sturdy, and good sounding (IMO) headphones. You can buy anything too if it breaks or wears out to fix it when needed.

This means there are lots on the second hand market too.

pkill ,

Beyerdynamic or Jabra are also quite good, depending on your budget. Cheap Sennheisers might have overly strong bass and bad breathability.

GissaMittJobb ,

What’s specifically bad with the AmazFit watches in your experience? I’m curious to know.

Fuzzy_Red_Panda ,

I have an Amazfit Bip 5 with Gadgetbridge and for the most part it works just fine. It even accurately recognizes my bicycle workouts, something my Apple Watch Series 5 could never manage to do. For $80, I am very satisfied.

On the flip side, the Sleep and Do Not Disturb modes let through calendar notifications and sounds no matter what, which is mildly infuriating.

I also deleted the Zepp app after the initial pairing, so maybe that’s part of why my experience is different?

just_another_person , to selfhosted in Is This The Most Secure Messaging App?

One of the bigger things that makes something “secure” is going to be a chain of trust, whereas you are using a third-party library. That’s one difference, but as you’ve already mentioned, a larger security model and protocol with solid functional tests and regular auditing is probably going to be safer than something like this.

xoron OP ,

How can I describe the chain of trust in a self hosted system? I’m sure auditing will help inspire confidence but this isn’t something I can do for the app. Open sourcing is the next best thing to open it up to public review.

I don’t follow

cashmaggot , to showerthoughts in If malls continue to shut down and decay over the next twenty years, someone should turn them into retirement communities for GenX and Millennials.

I've thought about this a lot, on account of infinite people having an insane amount of trouble just keeping consistent shelter over their heads. My gal had suggested this as a means for the homeless. I know that right now malls are being lent out to many individual small organizations (namely churches as far as I know it). But I am not sure this is sustainable as a whole. Due to maintenance costs, hazardous situations like mold and lack of privacy.

I also think about how people keep saying cost of living is why people aren't having kids. But I have lived in multiple places that were once a much larger living space that had been jankily peacemealed into several much smaller apartments. I am a human that enjoys having space of my own, even if it's micro in nature. I can't imagine I am alone in that. And I don't believe people will want to further invest in divvying up spaces in malls. At least, unless they're getting kickbacks. And they'll probably do it in the worst of ways. Leading to spaces that will be barely sound and fast to degrade but slow to fix. I mean shelter is super duper important. But I swear to god your surroundings can affect your mental state. And when you're wedged together in a decaying mold filled building with a bunch of aging individuals facing a slew of different health-issues it'll probably deteriorate your wellness faster than if we tore the places down and utilized some sort of cheap eco-friendly building material/robo-builder to assist making healthier homes.

Also mind you, I don't think we're gunna have beautiful low-income or middle-income homes if the greige, vinyl, orange-peel, chrome take-over points towards anything.

It’s a really old SMT2 processor with just two physical cores. Even a physical quad-core with SMT2 struggles in 2024, especially if you’re trying to build from source (I use Guix, btw). You need a workstation processor - the U series isn’t going to cut for the task you’re trying to do. Maybe a H, HQ, K or KF-labelled processor? Something like a 6700HQ, 6820HQ, or a Xeon 1505/1535 v5/v6? The P5x series (not the P5xs) is what you need, minus the dGPU. They’re still quite expensive, and at this point, you’re better off getting a A485/T495/T14 Gen 1/2.

I’ve started looking more into getting an ARM laptop. I know a bloke who has an M1 Macbook and it has indescribable battery life without sacrificing performance. Apple is out of the question due to their walled garden, though (I don’t want to get sucked into their ecosystem and end up with an iPhone, Apple Watch, and who knows what else), so Snapdragon X series it is for me.
