Knusper , to nostupidquestions in How do you deal with endless cookies dialogues?

There is an HTTP Header, called “Do Not Track”, but unfortunately, it has been broken.
The idea was that even under legislations that allow assuming users want to be tracked, this header being set by explicit user action would have been clear evidence that this assumption is wrong in this case.

Unfortunately, Google and Facebook refused to comply outright and with their tracking software running on pretty much all webpages, compliance was never an option for all those webpages.

And Microsoft killed it off completely, by setting it per default in Internet Explorer. Might sound like a good thing, but it meant that the header could be there, even if that particular user actually fucking loves being tracked, which meant it was pretty much legally void.

And to twist for switching between main and selfie camera.

yoast ,

It’s been six years since I switched from an X2 to a pixel 2 and I still miss the flashlight chop

Landericus ,

I had two moto phones back to back and then switched to the pixel. Can’t tell you how many times I tried to turn on the flashlight this way before realization kicks in.

Cube6392 ,

I still chop chop the Teracube I’ve had for a while and then go “oh yeah…”

revlayle ,

I went to pixel because the last couple of moto phones were just meh, but chop chop flashlight was the greatest thing ever

Should be noted it’s fairly simple to do this on any Android phone with Tasker.

Profile > Event > Sensor > Shake Left-Right > task=torch toggle

Tasks > Alert > Torch > Set Toggle > task - torch toggle

From lack of a better solution, I would symlink the folder or use stow --target /etc flag if you use stow for managing dotfiles.

Eideen , to nostupidquestions in What's the difference between Frame Rate and Refresh Rate?
@Eideen@lemmy.world avatar

Linus Tech tips has some great videos about it:

In short:

  • In First person shoots, more frames per second, is better.
  • For “slower” games, there is lite benefits to more frames then refresh rate.
  • For “slower” games, there can be a power benifts to running the game at lower frames per second.

What @titaalik and @Entropy is say about frames per second and refresh rate is correct.

There is a nice tech demo, that you can play around with.

bdonvr , to fediverse in A Lemmy instance with no defederation

Keep in mind your instance will cache thumbnails of remote content… including possibly illegal content for your area.

For example there’s (far too) many instances that host or are themed around “lolicon” - which is cartoon child pornography. That’s illegal in some jurisdictions.

Also remember federation is a two way street. The people you’re going to attract with this concept are largely the same groups many instances are trying to keep out. If you get even a little popularity I would expect many mainstream instances to defederate you. Then you’re basically back where you started - what’s the point?

syntax OP ,

Im aware that my server may cache illegal content. However this is usually easily delt with. It can simply be removed/user banned and can be purged from the server. This can all be done from the admin settings.

I also dont see the main instances defederating us. Our server will be moderated just as any other main lemmy server would. Just setting it up so that the users from our server can intract with any other server they wish. Any content or anyone who breaks our rules will be removed/banned. Just because we have an open federation policy does not mean there will be a lack of moderation.

I’m a recent Immich adopter, but one thing that seems to be missing compared to Google photos is the ability to manually backup by picking and choosing individual photos. Am I missing something or can you only do “all or nothing” with folder backups?

I am also missing this. AFAICT there is no way to backup all photos yet.

Hazdaz , to android in Neat moto feature I wish to see in more phones

I miss my Motorola phones.

Had nothing but Motorolas since my very first Android. Absolutely loved the gestures and hands free interaction. Went through a series of Moto phones over the years until I accidentally destroyed my last one and needed a new device ASAP. Ended up with a Samsung S21 which is a perfectly fine phone, but it doesn’t have the personality of any of my old Motos. It does have a much better camera though than any of my Motorolas.

I don’t want to buy a new phone any time soon, but I definitely want to go back to Motorola.

kethali , to gaming in Modern Pokemon games hold your hand too much.

I think modern games in general hold your hand too much. Some small level of hand holding/tutorial is fine, but so many take it way too far. I’ve gotten bored of a lot of games before they actually started because of that.

worfamerryman OP ,

I am having trouble thinking of an example, but I know for sure that I have turned off a few games because the tutorial was just long and boring.

One of them was Pokemon Arcus, or however it is spelled.

I much prefer analogue. Angle of the needle is a quick read + I don’t like relying on a digital display for my essential information. Also aesthetics

@theinspectorst@kbin.social avatar

I'm one of them! I didn't even know about r/selfhosted when I was on Reddit but I found this place when I joined kbin. I've been thinking on-and-off over the last year about self hosting so subscribed. I still occasionally look at Reddit in view-only mode though (largely for legacy content) so I also subscribed to r/selfhosted over there too last time I checked it.

It's not subscriber numbers that matter though, it's active users and quality new posts - people who go to the sub regularly, upvote, comment, and create content that causes other people in turn to look at the sub. I'm still a subscriber to a tonne of Reddit subs that I used to post and comment regularly on, and now don't. If every active Reddit user became a passive user then Reddit would grind to a halt overnight, regardless of how many users they notionally have.

Pop_OS!, a popular Linux distribution, is writing a new desktop environment. A desktop environment is basically the functionality of the desktop, think the taskbar and window snapping, etc. on Windows and the dock and top bar on macOS. A desktop environment also comes with its own set of apps, like how Windows comes with Explorer and Task Manager.
