What does VLC have to do with piracy?

It’s just a media player, right?

partmussels ,

It is THE media player.

In my experience, 100% use mpv over vlc.

Vlc in my experience is just too heavy and has playback issues, while mpv is perfect.

TwilightKiddy ,

I’ve used VLC for an incredibly long time, until I found about mpv about two weeks ago. It’s both a lot lighter and packs a lot more utility. I can finally frame step backwards and see millisecond timestamps! The only downside is that you have to do a bit of tinkering with all the configs and plugins, but it’s so worth it.

ok so, where are we? And who are these people? and what am i seeing?

IndustryStandard OP ,

In Jerusalem. The people getting beat up are Palestinians. The people beating them up are Israeli soldiers.

KillingTimeItself ,

ok that sounds about right.

These particular officers are really only making their ranks look bad in the eyes of the people they are claiming to protect. If they are not disciplined in a meaningful way, then there is a big problem here brewing.

theacharnian ,
@theacharnian@lemmy.ca avatar

They are not “only making their ranks look bad”. More important than their fucking looks and reputation is that they are also brutalizing and traumatizing an occupied People.

Immersive_Matthew ,

Agreed. We do not know the whole story here, but it does not look good and I am willing to bet these people being attacked is unjustified.

SkyezOpen ,

We do not know the whole story here

Maybe not he whole story for this specific instance, but the whole story generally is something that rhymes with “Israel is a genocidal apartheid state.”

Immersive_Matthew ,

I would agree with that by the evidence we are seeing but the comment I made was about this incident specifically in the USA.

brain_in_a_box ,

then there is a big problem here brewing

I don’t know if you’ve been living under a rock or something, but we’re a bit past that point mate.

Banana_man ,

My guy Palestine is occupied since 1948 by Israel who, usually, “only” did sporadic bombings here and there. Now there’s an active war with some 35k dead and Israeli forces preparing to invade Rafah which has an encampment of unthinkable amounts of refugees. There’s a genocide going on right now. This kind of behaviour is encouraged, not ignored. Their ranks look bad enough committing genocide, it isn’t a few “bad apples”.

I’ve been zipping things all day. Because it’s only one blob in the container, and then you can use website_run_from_package, which is just about the only way to get azure functions stood up via infra-as-code.

But whatever unzip thing they use sure isn’t the linux default, because it doesn’t support symlinks. And pnpm uses almost exclusively symlinks, to point to its central package store, so re-installing doesn’t take 8 years like it does with npm.

But that’s fine, because zip will follow symlinks and bake the actual files in, in place - which is pretty slick. But then azure functions package resolver can’t seem to figure out what the hell is going on, because it’s still putting dependencies in node_modules/.pnpm.

So we pass —shamefully-hoist, which is a great name for a flag, which puts all the things at the top level of node_modules, and now zip works, and azure works - but each dependency also comes with its own node_modules, with another symlink to a package that’s already at the top level. So it works, but it’s 10x bigger than it needs to be - 6.4 MB instead of 668 KB.

Fortunately we can use our build script to populate a .npmrc file, and set node-linker to hoisted, at which point pnpm will mimic npm with no symlinks at all - small, efficient, and dumb enough that the azure functions runtime can figure out how to deal with it.

It took me 4 hours to debug this mess.

All that to say, yes, a weighted blanket would be downright delightful right now, but please keep the zip files away from me

Some of these replies seem to think it is okay to hit a random guy, walking passed, in the knee with batons. Escalation of force starts with clear and concise commands. I didn’t see one of those uniformed men command or inform those two that they weren’t allowed to do whatever it is they were doing (appeared to be walking casually on the street) before they busted out the batons.
