While I can definitely enjoy most of the fairly cheesey popular sci-fi like stargate and star trek, I really like it more when sci-fi is written so that it seems like it could actually happen one day, at least in not breaking any physical laws. Especially as the scale of what is depicted starts getting a bit extreme. Like, portraying a star empire that is basically just a historical maritime empire with the population scaled up a couple orders of magnitude, living on a few planets mostly with a couple modern cities each with starships that travel across the stars in a few hours to weeks is cool and all, but so unrealistic as to not be super exiting. On the other hand, portraying what an actual interstellar spaceship would probably have to be like, based on known physics, complete with the kind of size it would probably be and the sheer length of time it would take to travel, and the scale and age of the kind of civilization that would have the economic capacity to build and use them, while much harder to get right due to the needed attention to detail, results in something that is made all the more awe-inspiring by the knowledge that it isnt impossible for something like it to exist one day, or might even exist already, somewhere very far away.

VicksVaporBBQrub OP ,

Same. The Outter Limits and The Twilight Zone hits both of those spots. Multiple short stories that are either completely futuristic, all the way to, relatable to today.

totallynotarobot ,

If you haven’t already, read yourself some Arthur C Clarke. He wrote speculative futurism based on known science. If you pick up later editions of some of his books, they’ll include forewords by him going over the effect on the story and premises therein of evolutions in scientific understanding that happened since first publishing.

Catoblepas ,

His stories are also hopeful and filled with wonder at the universe in a way that I feel is lacking in a lot of contemporary sci-fi.

CarbonIceDragon ,
@CarbonIceDragon@pawb.social avatar

I’ve read several books of his actually, namely the space Odyssey series, Rama series, the songs of distant earth, and childhood’s end, tho I didn’t like that last one as much as the former ones.

vrighter ,

i loved seeing a missile in space in the expanse. You see it reorient itself backwards and fire its thrusters to cancel out its forward velocity, smoothly changing orientation during the manoever to end up accelerating towards, and pointing to the target (the target was to the side of the direction it was launched at). Very cool touch.

Can someone translate what’s really written there?

I am barely literate in Chinese but I think it is something along the lines of “the working permit system for foreigners is broken, please wait patiently”

I can read type font Chinese pretty okay, but handwritten style might as well be an entirely different language. You did better than I could have haha

bus_factor , to asklemmy in What is point 61 (Rename it "The Alexandra Line") referring to?

They’re referring to point 60. They want to rename the Moorgate line when it’s converted back into a tube line.

EinfachUnersetzlich ,

Yeah that makes more sense. The line goes up past Alexandra Palace.

Masimatutu OP ,

Ah, I see. Thanks a lot!

SquiffSquiff , to asklemmy in What is point 61 (Rename it "The Alexandra Line") referring to?

I think you need to read it as following on from

  1. Turn the Moorgate line back into a Tube line

That takes us here

Thanks!

My Internet here is like 1-3 Mbps if I’m lucky because I have 2 shitty options. Launch some more of these fuckers up there so I can have useful Internet.

Cethin ,

How about we encourage more competition or make it state owned instead?

TORFdot0 ,

Starling isn’t competing with terrestrial ISPs, it’s competing with other sat-isps and WISPs which will never get better internet otherwise.

Trainguyrom ,

I mean it is competing with terrestrial ISPs who continue to offer fewer megabits than you have fingers in the year of our lord 2023

PissinSelfNdriveway ,

Make it owned by the people responsible for us having shit Internet to start with. Brilliant, what could go wrong?

Cethin ,

Capitalists are the reason for that. Government involvement is just that the rules weren’t written well enough (although sometimes on purpose because they’re being paid, but still it’s the fault of capitalists, not the government).

PissinSelfNdriveway ,

No … the government is responsible for us. Lt having a useful public service. Capitalism is trash but at least we have space internet which is more than we were ever going to get from rich old fucks making laws. But then we get full on exceptional individuals that get angry because they think it’s gonna stop them from moving to Mars… in the words of Danny Boone " ain’t no motherfuckers gonna live on Mars".

She does look like Bonnie Plunkett (the mom on the tv sitcom Mom). On IMDB it says her doppelganger is Magot Robbie. ¯\(ツ)/¯ Closer to Leslie Stahl, CBS 60 minutes news anchor, than Margot Robbie.

I am genuinely confused about how Hexbearians thought being dicks on the internet was going to change any hearts and/or minds

Zetta ,

¯_(ツ)_/¯ I sort of look at them as amusement. It’s not like what they want will happen In our lifetimes (or ever probably). I don’t necessarily get why everyone hates them, just try looking at them as funny content lol

Gormadt ,

You must not have seen the amount of genocide denial they do, or the amount of simping for dictators.

Dubious_Fart ,

I genuinely don’t understand why the admins are dragging ass and not just defederating from them already. They provide nothing of value, just spam and harassment.

pinkdrunkenelephants ,

Because you’re on a tankie instance. Go to sopuli.xyz; the admin banned all extremists left and right so it’s smooth sailing.

Zetta ,

What does tankie mean?

Dubious_Fart , (edited )

wanna-be-edgy teenager who unironically wears Che Guevara t-shirts, mostly.

Also the kind that say anything western is the devil, and anything Russian and/or Chinese is the great saviour/perfection/whatever other bullshit.

Zetta ,

So would the people from hexbear be considered tankies?

Dubious_Fart ,

Apparently so.

NoiseColor ,

Is there a way to see who has defederated?

Dubious_Fart ,

Welp, tried to delete my account and fuck off from this place due to that knowledge, but apparently account deletion doesnt work. so I’m just fuckin off.

Thanks for the info, made the decision easier.

Gormadt ,

Because if memory serves both Lemmy.ml and Lemmygrad share some admins with each other

And with Lemmygrad and Hexbear loving each other: federation is going to stay a thing over here

One of the things I love about the instance I’m on is that we’re defederated from Hexbear, it’s pretty nice NGL

Dubious_Fart ,

Well that certainly explains a lot.

DragonTypeWyvern , (edited )

What’s weird is that I don’t remember the Chapo guys doing any of that, they seem pretty solidly democratic socialist.

I guess that’s what happens when you let your community mods be Putin bots or whatever dumbfuckery went on.

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It’s also what happens when you lock yourself in an echo chamber for long enough, you views will drift.

But the Chapo crowd always had tendencies towards brigading and whatnot which is why Reddit eventually deleted their sub.

Plus the Chapo crowd were firmly “Bernie or Bust,” which was a pretty shit view at the time.

NoiseColor ,

They are the best example what happens when people are locked in their echo chamber. They are radicalizing themselves to the point of absurdity. The statements they make are so illogical its hard to even have a discussion about it, because they literally deny truisms.

Zetta ,

Ahh I guess that’s a good reason to hate them
