In Germany you can usually bring your own containers for takeout. Many restaurants have also switched to using paper-based takeout containers.

jlow ,

I’m always wondering if these brown “paper” / “cardboard” packaging materials are actually plastic-free (I’m also almost certain they’re since “compostable” packaging is still allowed to contain absurd (20%?) amounts in some jurisdictions). The worst thing is that most come without anything to identify them by so even if some are we’ll never know!

colourlessidea ,

As far as I’m aware they are not - they have a lining inside that contains plastic. At least that’s what I remember of paper coffee cups for example. But yes - where I live they are still supposed to be sorted as paper products.

Ziggurat , to asklemmy in Any restaurants you know that are reducing plastic?

Not real restaurant, but I’ve seen a lot of “to go” food shop offering a small discount if you bring your own box.

Nowadays, I feel like most of the plastic is replaced by paper, I even see some place using biscuit box for sauces.

numbermess , to asklemmy in Any restaurants you know that are reducing plastic?

Costco food court doesn’t seem to have any straws at all anymore, paper or plastic. There are still using plastic lids, but they have a little flap in them sort of like a coffee cup lid that you can sip through.

SmashingSquid , to nostupidquestions in Do any ATMs in Belgium support balance inquiries?

Is there no number on your card you can call and get your balance using an automated system?

ciferecaNinjo OP , (edited )

No. There are a couple unpublished phone numbers but they’re a disaster. I’ve not encountered a Belgian bank that gives automated account info over the phone. Last time I called I think it was just a greeting saying “contact us through the app or email” or something like that, IIRC.

BmeBenji , to futurama in What are your guys' thoughts on the new episode?

I have to disagree with your point about the references to modern technology sticking out like a sore thumb. I binge the whole show at least once a year and there are countless jokes throughout the series poking fun at technology that was relevant at air date. The first one that comes to mind is Amy’s comically small cell phone (which was a flip phone) that she couldn’t carry around because the wireless charger was the size of a toaster.

Another that I can quickly think of is the way they portray the internet, and the direct references to websites like Napster. They even resorted to making jokes based off of internet memes that have LONG since died off. For example, the entire conflict between Fry and Leela in the episode with the MomCorp eyePhone is based on the popularity of Susan Boyle’s performance on Britain’s Got Talent from who knows what year.

If references to modern tech are off-putting to you, you haven’t payed any attention in older episodes.

ono , to linux in On Monday morning we (Mozilla) detected a very large crash spike affecting Firefox users on Linux, specifically on an older version of a Debian-based distribution

Highlights:

The crash started apparently out-of-the-blue, hitting thousands of Argentinian users on a Debian-based distro called Huayra, and specifically on version 5 which was based on Debian 10.

Everybody seemed to crash while searching for images on Google.

Google’s code was allocating 20000 variables in a single frame.

There’s Revolt that seems to be very similar to Discord. They even have instructions to self host on their github repo. Don’t know if this matters, but as of right now it is not federated.

Matrix? It's also quite close and federated as well.

This is a part of the SNP’s manifesto already, FYI.

Since the latter doesn’t follow from the former, refuting the first point doesn’t automatically refute the second. Nice try, Lake Superior, but you might want to brush up on formal logic.
