I can’t suggest anyone because I use gsuite legacy but in 2022 when they were going to stupidly start charging for something they said would be free forever people put together a spreadsheet comparing providers. Might be out of date for some but might be helpful.

Here is the Reddit thread for it and Here’s a direct link to the spreadsheet

We got an iPhone for my niece who is 8. It’s locked down so all she can do is text, call, and take pictures/video and she can’t contact anyone not in her contacts list. She has some games but can’t use them for more than an hour per day and they won’t open during school hours.

A big issue is parents not bothering to learn how to use and set up parental controls.

SmashingSquid ,

No, they literally can’t be bypassed unless they figure out the passcode. Parental controls on iOS are part of the OS, not like the easily bypassed software you would install on a computer.

SmashingSquid ,

Apple screen time parental Controls were created because third party software was using MDM which Apple didn’t like. If Apple can lock down a phone with mdm for companies to give to their employees why exactly do you think software built into the OS is easy to get around like net nanny?

Googling found an article about getting around it.

Nothing on there an 8 year old would do and there’s directions on how to prevent any of it. You can lock down changing system settings or even stop them from editing their contacts.

SmashingSquid ,

So… are you going to link the live cd that works on iPhones or just going to continue talking about the net nanny days? iOS is locked down. Nothing is bulletproof but a child isn’t going to find a way around it.

My mother is like this. She will never be happy and is addicted to being a victim. My mother actually pulled the victim card during Covid because her work was paying her to not work but she had to call every morning in case they needed her. She said it was worse having to call in the morning rather than work so was basically a victim because she got free paid time off while lots of people had lost all of their income.

Nothing you do will make this woman happy. Don’t try and be more friendly to her because it doesn’t matter. Better to act disinterested in everything she says and don’t answer personal questions she can twist and gossip about to other people.

There are many people who can’t grasp anything technology related. I’ve seen people tapping a can against the scanner instead of scanning the barcode and getting mad it didn’t work. UIs on most self checkouts these days are the same with different branding and they work well.

It is impossible to make something everyone can use when people let their brains shut off any time they have to use a machine.

SmashingSquid ,

Most self checkouts in the US work fine for me too. The only issue I ever have is when stores have the weight sensor in the bagging area turned on and it does the stupid unexpected item in bagging area crap. There is one model that I won’t touch when I see it though because it was slow as hell even when it was new.

SmashingSquid ,

Try “gloves in a bottle”. It soaks in immediately instead of leaving your hands greasy.

SmashingSquid ,

I would spend the money on a domain. There’s lots of new TLDs to choose from and some are cheap. A .stream domain is $3.99 at namesilo as is .link.

SmashingSquid ,

I was going by sorting tldlist by renewal price but I see now the price doesn’t match. .link is cheap to renew.

This was posted to one of the communities I sub to a day ago: spectrum.ieee.org/flow-battery-2666672335

This would probably be the best option if it takes off.

The Telecom Industry Is Very Mad Because The FCC MIGHT Examine High Broadband Prices (www.techdirt.com)

The Telecom Industry Is Very Mad Because The FCC MIGHT Examine High Broadband Prices::We’ve long noted how the FCC (regardless of party) largely ignores how muted competition and monopolization drives up prices for consumers. The agency often talks a good (if ambiguous) game about “bridging the digital divide,” but they...

I pay $39.99 USD for 300 megabit symmetrical fiber.

I had this issue and I started using acne body wash instead of the aveeno I normally use. I use the dove men’s care spray on deodorant and have no issues. Trimming / shaving underarm hair helps as well.

SmashingSquid ,

Try acne body wash. It made a big difference for me, before switching I was using aveeno. I use the Amazon brand version of this: www.neutrogena.com/products/…/6805370.html

Make sure you’re using a wash cloth, loofa, etc not just your hands. Scrub well.

I still have one of the Apple TV HDs from 2015 on one tv and it’s still fast compared to the built in smart tv on TVs I got last year. I had 2 more that I upgraded to 4K units last year but gave the HDs away and they’re still being used. They really weren’t expensive for me because directv had launched their streaming service and were giving Apple TVs away when paying for a certain amount of months.

SmashingSquid ,

The Apple TV is the best out there. It’s quick, has a great remote now, and not full of ads. I don’t use android but there’s probably a third party app to use as a remote for pasting passwords.

SmashingSquid ,

Looks like a normal grocery store to me. If you want run down looking you should see what family dollar stores look like.

SmashingSquid ,

It was the first store I thought of but I haven’t seen one in years. The ones here made family dollar look good and Walmart look upscale.

SmashingSquid ,

What? It’s not crazy unstable, I’ve never had an issue with it.

SmashingSquid ,

I hate amp so much that once iOS supported safari extensions I bought the Amplosion extension (from the dev of the Reddit Apollo app). There were constant scrolling and zoom issues for me any time I loaded an amp page, fuck amp.

Mastodon and today's fediverse are unsafe by design and unsafe by default (privacy.thenexus.today)

Even though millions of people left Twitter in 2023 – and millions more are ready to move as soon as there’s a viable alternative – the fediverse isn’t growing.1 One reason why: today’s fediverse is unsafe by design and unsafe by default – especially for Black and Indigenous people, women of color, LGBTAIQ2S+...

SmashingSquid ,

This is the first time I’ve seen this one. Best result I saw from 30 seconds of googling:

In 2020, the National Runaway Safeline (NRS) began using LGBTQIA2S+ to recognize those who identify as “Two-Spirit.” This phrase refers to people who identify as having both a masculine and feminine spirit, and is used by some Indigenous and Native communities.

“Two-Spirit” describes the cultural-specific understanding for the diverse gender traditions of Indigenous and Native people. Historically, Two-Spirit people were among the most respected in their communities, often serving as community healers, ceremonial leaders or caregivers to the elderly or orphaned children. This is consistent across many cultures who experienced extreme oppression and intergenerational trauma through periods of colonization. Today, young people who identify as Two-Spirit may suffer from inequalities perpetuated by a legacy of discriminatory laws and policies.

In order for the car to access your texts you would need to pair the phone via Bluetooth and allow access to them. This is more about older systems from before Apple CarPlay and android’s equivalent where you were stuck with whatever features the car had rather than just letting your phone take over the entertainment system’s interface.

It’s done that in every single one of its Tl;drs I’ve read.

situs inversus, a rare congenital condition in which the organs in the chest and abdomen are arranged in a mirror image of their normal positions.

SmashingSquid ,

Do they disable the app if you update or display a warning that it might not be compatible like dexcom?

SmashingSquid ,

Is there no number on your card you can call and get your balance using an automated system?

SmashingSquid ,

Missing lte band 71. Hope the buyers don’t have T-Mobile in an area that’s b71 only.

SmashingSquid ,

Probably something to ask the Lemmy devs.

Alexa is the same and used to work fine. My favorite is “Alexa, turn on the fan” turns on the fan in my mother’s room but “Alexa, turn off the fan”correctly turns off the fan in my bedroom. I ended up getting a HomePod and using home assistant to add all my devices to HomeKit. Shit on Siri all you want but at least she can turn the right devices on and off and on first try.

SmashingSquid ,

The whole reason I order online is to avoid using the phone. I usually find their website and see if they have their own online ordering. Smaller places often have online ordering provided by an unknown company that charges normal prices instead of having to mark it up to cover DoorDash fees.

SmashingSquid ,

I’ve gotten drivers from the local pizza place using grubhub but sometimes would get a grubhub driver so at least with grubhub they must have a choice. That pizza place used to have their own online ordering but they sold the business so now they use slice which seems to charge a flat fee. I don’t think slice has their own drivers.

I really only ever order pizza from local places, I’d expect normal restaurants to not have their own drivers.

SmashingSquid ,

Do carriers still charge for voicemail?

SmashingSquid ,

They charge extra for international sms too? Wow you really get screwed.

Are phone notification LEDs still a thing?

Looking at all the features that older phones uses to have compared to newer ones, I never hear anyone talk about the removal of the notification LED. I personally really liked that feature, being able to see if I got an email, a text or missed a call without turning on my phone was awesome. My Samsung note 8 had this feature,...

SmashingSquid ,

The iPhone can flash the camera LED for alerts. It’s under accessibility-> audio/visual. Not sure about android but check in your phone’s accessibility features there’s probably something similar.

SmashingSquid ,

If you don’t want it publicly exposed to the internet you can use a vpn. Tailscale is probably the easiest.

This twit posts their crappy site constantly and eventually gets banned and makes a new account.

How should I handle an ex friend who feels like he needs to bully me to raise his own self esteem? (We're adults)

I went to college with this guy 10 years ago and I considered him a friend up until this year. Something changed in him, and he constantly needs to put me down and I don’t know how to handle it....

SmashingSquid ,

The alcohol is likely related. He might be insecure or something and projecting it on you, liquid courage probably makes him feel more comfortable being an asshole.

SmashingSquid ,

It’s the same as with any other coupon. They make more money from people who don’t bother to clip it.

SmashingSquid ,

Google is still the best in my experience, at least for stuff I search for. As long as they’re just slightly better what reason do they have to improve?

SmashingSquid ,

Yeah there was just an article on ars about malware from an ad pretending to be keepass.

arstechnica.com/…/google-hosted-malvertising-lead…

SmashingSquid ,

The next generation of CarPlay is going to be able to control the AC and integrate with the car enough to take over all the panels. I haven’t seen Siri mentioned but I’m guessing Siri would be able to control it too.

I don’t really follow android so I don’t know if they have similar in the works.

SmashingSquid ,

None of the products that had the price increased are locked in. Apple TV plus doesn’t even need an Apple device and has many competitors, Apple News has plenty of competitors, there are games you can buy without Apple Arcade though most do stupid in app purchases.

SmashingSquid ,

It should hopefully not have any effect on regulatory perceptions since legal psychiatric use should involve a medication with a certain dose that’s the lowest amount that will help instead of just eating a bunch of mushrooms but we do live in the dumbest timeline. I felt bad for this guy thinking it was a mental breakdown and he needed help but this was a series of really bad decisions.

SmashingSquid ,

I found a better article on Reuters that says he took the mushrooms about 48 hours before. Would they even still have an effect at that point? I’ve never taken shrooms.

SmashingSquid ,

There aren’t “5g bands”. The reason they shut down 2g/3g is to reuse the spectrum for 5g.
