This was addressed in the movie 'The Bucket List’s and I always wondered if there was any truth to it. Now I know. I also know, unconfirmed, that the animals are not treated well for their piece in the process. Take it with a grain of salt. I’m not rich or hardcore enough to even worry about this level of coffee, but interesting information none-the-less.

Cheesus ,

It’s really cheap if you buy it local. When I was on vacation in Laos, there were signs on the side of the road for 0.5kg of the stuff for $5 usd equivalent. I didn’t try it because I’ve heard of the animal rights issues.

ilhamagh ,

I’m from one of the country in question and I’m certain animal welfare is far at the bottom of the list of our priorities.

Even our famous endangered species like Orangutans fight losing battles against palm fruit oil producers ravaging their natural forest habitat.

So yeah, that’s what happens when the majority of the population still needs to compete for food with the animals.

Greed and corruption are widespread everywhere it’s exhausting.

Tartas1995 ,

I was told by a producer and seller, that they would keep the animal hostage for only a few months and would let them free afterwards.

What I heard, was “we force feed them coffee for a few months, let them free in a somewhat controlled environment and setup traps to catch them again and abuse them again for a few months”

I am not sure if I believe them about letting them free at all.

Boozilla , to technology in Question about Active Noise Cancellation alternatives
@Boozilla@lemmy.world avatar

The A in ANC stands for Active. It is actively listening to ambient noise in your environment to cancel it out with a waveform tailored to do so in real time. If the noise in your environment is very static (like a hum or whirring) it might be possible to embed a cancelling sound in the audio file. But it’s likely it still won’t line up properly to really cancel it. It’s more likely to cause a worse sound because of being out of phase (like two leaf blowers going at the same time).

I hope that makes sense.

downpunxx OP ,

it does, appreciate the response, i'm just trying to find a way to cancel noise using any ole earbuds to sleep with, and even the top of the line anc earbuds don't hold a candle to over the ear anc headphones

Donjuanme ,

Overwhelming the noise is another option, a white noise soundtrack might be a decent bet. Otherwise you’re going to want to go with ear plugs.

czardestructo ,
@czardestructo@lemmy.world avatar

So I work for Bose. ANR ear buds are notably better than ANR headphones because they totally block your ear and adjust the ANR based on a microphone literally inside your ear. It records what is heard in your ear and cancels it, our latest buds are uncomfortably good at this. I find the absolute quiet a bit unsettling.

But to your question, you just want quiet while you sleep? What about good old foam ear plugs? They work fairly well when put in far enough.

femtech ,

Latest that are out or still in the lab?

czardestructo ,
@czardestructo@lemmy.world avatar

The latest out in the world, the Quiet comfort ultras. Once you find the correct sized stability band and ear tip sizes you have two exceptional gaskets to block out the world. They work amazingly well.

downpunxx OP ,

thanks, i use earplugs all the way up in there, and they block pretty much everything except movement, which isn't sound per se, but it is vibration, and that seems to be silenced by my QCII headphones which I've been wearing to bed for a while now, they block pretty much everything and I'm not woken up by my upstairs neighbors walking abound on their floor/my ceiling like i am when i've got ear plug in. iv'e tried the bose qcii earbuds and the sony 1000xm4, and in my experience neither of them hold a candle to my bose qcii over the ear headphones in carpetting of sound. i figured if there was a general "sound cancelling" frequency someone somewhere at sometime might have recorded it as a mp3 or flac and i could try to play it from any old earbuds whilst i slept, but it seems that's not technically how noise cancellation functions, but i do appreciate your response, being an expert, thanks again

czardestructo ,
@czardestructo@lemmy.world avatar

Im wondering if the passive attenuation of your headphones is doing more work than the ANR system is? Regardless sound is perception and that’s all that matters. I think using any ear bud, headphone or even a speaker with Brown Noise playing loudly is likely the only sure way to completely block out your perception of all noise. Or just take some gummies and turn your brain off :)

solrize , (edited )

the absolute quiet

WANT. I didn’t know that existed now. Best I’ve been able to do is foamies, that are better than nothing, but still let in a lot of sound. I will go look for new Bose IEM’s. Thanks.

Added: Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds, I think. I’ll see what I can find out. 6 hour runtime is a bit unfortunate though, not enough to get through a work day.

Btw, a lot of the blurb about these is about music playback quality and I don’t want that at all. No music, just quiet. If they are 10db quieter at speech frequencies than typical 32db NRR foamies then that is probably worth the $250 to me. The amount of productivity I lose to office chatter distraction exceeds that in like no time.

Is there a reasonable way to replace the batteries once they crap out? Frankly I’d be fine with a wired version.

The web-UI and Pictrs image host has been down for more than a week now, but the backend API for app use and federation was still working. But I have the feeling that sometimes during the last 24h that also went down, or at least I haven’t seen a post relayed from them during that time.

I really don’t know what’s going on there, but at least initially someone said they ran out of storage on their server. But it seems odd that this takes more than a week to fix. Maybe the main admin is on holidays?

wgbirne ,

Federation is still working if you are reading this comment.

Undaunted , (edited )

As wgbirne already said, the admin has more important real life stuff to do unfortunately. If I understood it correctly, the lack of storage also killed the database, leaving it in an inconsistent state. In addition to that there seems to be an issue with the backups so no easy rollback and probably a lot of manual fixing needed.

@mozz@mbin.grits.dev avatar

You are correct. Some of the largest instances block bot traffic, but most don't, meaning your posts have been seen by AI crawlers and will continue to be so.

Short of not participating in federation and only discussing things within a private non-federated community on a personal instance or something, I don't think there's a way to prevent it.

cecep OP ,
@cecep@fedia.io avatar

Thanks for confirming. It's unfortunate that people who are outraged about Reddit selling their data to AI companies don't really have an alternative in the fediverse.

I guess the best hope is for new mechanisms to control AI crawlers to emerge, so they can be blocked per user rather than per domain. Maybe https://spawning.ai will come up with something. One can hope.

FaceDeer ,
@FaceDeer@kbin.social avatar

I really don't see how it would be physically possible to do that and still allow the content to be publicly seen by other humans.

Cheradenine ,

It is unfortunate, buy we are giving our data freely, as we did on Spezzit. IMHO it would be great to block efforts to monetize Lemmy by ai, but that is not what we signed up for.

Lemmy is neither private, nor closed. It’s just the way it works.

Contributing in an open forum means the data will get harvested. If it closed there will be fewer views, open is what we have now.

Companies will train on what we post, we are not giving that (directly) to a centralized service though. To me that compromise is enough.

TheOneCurly ,

I don’t see it as hypocritical at all. Public comments are, for me at least, put out for the public good. The same reason someone might license open source code with the MIT license. My issue with Reddit is that they restricted who can obtain the data and then privately sold them to only the highest bidder. They should be freely available to all who want to view them without restrictions on money or power.

originalucifer ,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

it really sounds like you really want a walled garden so you can control your.. .whatever. the fediverse is public by nature, so discussing how you can control public information is kinda.. weird.

cecep OP ,
@cecep@fedia.io avatar

Is it? Reddit is technically "public" too in the sense that you can view all the content without an account, yet Google and others pay for the data anyway. And for many years, people made stuff public and could reasonably expect it won't show up in any major search engines because Google, MS and others respected robot.txt. I know it was never legally binding. I'm also not naive, I know I give up control when I post publicly and there won't ever be a perfect solution to the AI crawler situation. But a lot is changing right now, regulatory and technologically.

originalucifer ,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

the fact that google has to pay for the data proves the walled garden you claim is public.

the fediverse is public, by default. it publicly distributes information to other publicly accessible servers.. by default.

its public information on publicly accessible servers that are opt-out by default. publicly.

im baffled how people can have some expectation of privacy in such a clearly defined public space.

cecep OP ,
@cecep@fedia.io avatar

You don't need to explain to me how the Fediverse works and I never said I have any expectation of privacy. But generally speaking, you're overlooking the fact that there always have been rules for what can, and cannot be done with information that is publicly available. Just because someone publicly posts his Facebook profile picture doesn't mean it's legal to use in an ad without permission, for example. People might break the rules, yes, but then they might face consequences, and that alone prevents many from breaking them in the first place. Not perfect, but better than nothing. And I'm saying we're in a process where rules are being renegotiated when it comes to using public information for AI training

originalucifer ,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

fair points, but i still posit that its a waste of time to attempt to regulate what can be viewed anonymously.

personally, i could not possibly care less about any of my data being ingested by 'ai'. not a battle i care to fight, or even find worthy of fighting.

cecep OP ,
@cecep@fedia.io avatar

That's fair, but I think if AI companies would be legally required to disclose the sources of their training data and if you make some successor to robot.txt legally binding as well (both is being discussed in the EU for example), at least the "bigger players" in the AI industry would respect the rules. Better than nothing

FigMcLargeHuge ,

I think you are mistaking publicly available with public. Just because reddit made everyone’s posts publicly available doesn’t mean they are public. Once you post something, they have the right to use that data in any way they choose, and you agreed to that when you signed up. Per their user agreement:

“You retain any ownership rights you have in Your Content, but you grant Reddit the following license to use that Content:

When Your Content is created with or submitted to the Services, you grant us a worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive, transferable, and sublicensable license to use, copy, modify, adapt, prepare derivative works of, distribute, store, perform, and display Your Content and any name, username, voice, or likeness provided in connection with Your Content in all media formats and channels now known or later developed anywhere in the world. This license includes the right for us to make Your Content available for syndication, broadcast, distribution, or publication by other companies, organizations, or individuals who partner with Reddit. You also agree that we may remove metadata associated with Your Content, and you irrevocably waive any claims and assertions of moral rights or attribution with respect to Your Content.”

Because they allow anyone to see the posts doesn’t make it “public” data, it just means that they are allowing you access to the data they now have a license to. Now lets say you work for a state agency. Any work you do is property of said state and is public. I believe the same goes for some government agencies, like NASA. The work they produce is public. That’s completely different than reddit allowing you to post on their platform and then allowing others to see your post. They can do whatever they want with the data, including turning it off one day and just sitting on it if they wanted. Expecting anything public from a private company, well good luck with that. Back to lemmy, well even if you blocked all AI from scraping from an instance, nothing would stop a company from just setting up their own instance, federating it, and just sucking up all the info as it comes in. Nothing you post on here will ever be private.

I think people are about to learn a hard lesson on the internet. Nothing is ever private if it is online.

OneCardboardBox ,

A story I heard was that it was the poor indigenous farmers who were forced to cultivate coffee for the Dutch. They weren’t allowed any of the beans they grew, but were able to collect it from the dung of civets that prowled around near the plantation. Of course, once the colonizers learned that it tasted “good”, it was commoditized too.
