You’re right even though you’re getting down voted.
Doesn’t make Uber or Lyft any less shady of a company but so many people have no idea of the overhead it takes to “run an app”. They think that it’s just some computers talking over the Internet that they pay 100$ a month for and not the possible 100’s of thousands of dollars they pay monthly for the infrastructure to support those apps.
It’s not an offline game that someone can just download and play, it’s a live service that is running, plus all of the data whether financial or otherwise that is being stored on multiple levels of backups not to mention the security infrastructure that needs to be maintained etc etc etc.
That being said, I’m not defending these companies in the slightest, but for someone to just say “run an app” is a massive understatement.
You're right even though you're getting down voted.
Par for the course at LemmyWorld. Redditors brought their Redditor attitudes to LW and downvote anything they could possibly conceive as corpo sympathizing.
It’s relatively cheap to maintain the service. What costs money is marketing and expanding that service. That’s what most people are working on.
Remember, Lyft and Uber have thousands and thousands of people giving them money every day. They don’t even maintain the cars, they just take a cut off the top. Sometimes greater than 50% of the ride.
They are making a ton of money, but they are also wasting it on new markets, new features, and Superbowl ads. They could easily just charge a little more in Minneapolis to make the same money, but they don’t want the drivers to win.
"Maintaining" means more than just leasing out a few server farms. It also means hiring software engineers, customer/driver support staffs, HR, legal teams, designers, etc, all of which are required to keep the day-to-day going. Uber and Lyft aren't small operations, by any means. They are monstrously huge projects that require a lot of bandwidth - both technical and human - in order to keep the lights on.
For what it's worth, Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, and pretty much every gig app out there have all operated at a net loss from the very beginning. It's not just expensive to maintain the service, it's impossibly expensive.
Bullies getting bullied. We have opened the gates of hell, and the meek can stand up and defend themselves or continue to be fodder for the machine Defense is not offense.
Misgendering is a very mild form of disrespect compared to what all is out there, regularly, on X and every other social media site. It is a good thing that these sites do not generally regulate disrespect, although for community controlled forums (such as subreddits) I think it’s good that moderators can choose their own rules.
Misgendering is a cornerstone of the antisocial system of harrassment that contributes to trans deaths. Calling it a mild form of harassment is deeply misguided.
By the way, this is one of those places where engaging in transphobia (or any other form of bigotry) will get someone banned.
Slander isn’t the same thing as being insulting. I couldn’t take you to court for calling me Stevie or telling everyone to call me Stevie.
I think twitter is stupid. I think the policy is stupid. I don’t think bullying people on any platform just to bully should be tolerated. Still though, that’s a whole different idea there.
So when you say “let people say what they want,” you mean, “privately-owned companies should be forced to allow people to say whatever they want unless it’s slanderous.”
Agreed. The hypocrites here are perfectly fine unjustifiably calling people they disagree with fascists, nazies, pedophiles etc. but then lose their shit when someone misgenders somebody. Some people are assholes - deal with it or block them.
Listen to yourself. You don’t even know the difference between plain old name calling and actual bigotry.
“Nazi” or even “pedophile” is not the same as calling a trans woman a man for the same reason that it’s not the same as calling a gay man a f- or a black man a n-. When you insult someone for an innate quality about themselves that harms no one, you’re a bigot. It’s really that simple and it’s sad that you don’t understand that.
The key qualification in the comment you’re busting is the word “unjustifiably.” It is pretty easy to justify calling people fascists or Nazis based on the subject’s own behavior. You can’t justify bigotry with anything but hatred.
As with so much of what happens at X, there is significant confusion about the policy as the company’s rules seem to change based on the whims of Musk rather than a considered process.
Here is what I assume happend:
Elon, desperate for approval from his “fans” personally changed this, because almost all the people left on twitter that engage with him are “right-wingers”. And they dont want to be held accountable for being vile garbage.
And so they, like the most fragile of snowflakes, started to whine about having to follow basic rules of human decency for once in their online existence, making them deeply uncomfortable.
And Elon followed suit, because these are the only people he has left now. People who exploit him for his position and clout, just as he exploits them for small ammounts of dopamine, when they applaud him for making the worls worse again.
I've noticed that healthy people get upset at being wrongly accused. The most vile and guilty get violently and angry at being tightly called out for being exactly what they are.
I have real American problems, like the fact that Americans have abandoned the most patriotic beverages ever!
Tea and Cider!
George Washington would never have been general or president without cider! Tons of Cider! (NOT beer- that wouldn't get as popular until later!)
Johnny Appleseed was NOT planting eating apples, either.
And now, most cider is kinda crap, and is going to give you a hangover. Its so difficult to ensure that you get a good drinking experience for your friends when trying to share with them the wonders of America's first brew of patriots.
And What about the Boston Tea Party?
The South at least keeps the dream alive with iced tea that it doesn't oversteep. (that's how you can tell if somewhere is Southern, btw- if they both have iced tea and don't brew it to bitter hell) But its still not a proper American fixation on reasonably priced tea!
“where required by local law” - on a global platform? How is that supposed to work? When the addresses or being addressed is in such a locality? After complaints only? After prosecution or court orders?
I guess it’s more a disclosure of what can happen than it is a terms of use or moderation guideline.
kiwi farms has murdered multiple people by tormenting them until they commit suicide. The worst that happened to them was a few small governments blocked them and cloudflare decided they were going to skip on a bill and dropped them. And then a different CDN supported them
twitter is still used by countless brands and influencers. And it has a large userbase of people who “won’t let elon win” or “understand that brands can’t abandon the site”. So elon et al could actively start beheading people on camera and nothing would happen.
“You can’t just change your URL and frontend and pretend you’re X. Even if someone did some editing on your backend, you were born Twitter and you’ll die Twitter!”
I have to mention I’m trying to make fun of transphobes, but idk if it’s coming through that well so I’m adding this disclaimer letting you know it’s an attempt at a joke. It’s just ironic because these arguments do work for Twitter (modernly known as “X”)
They will laugh and think it’s funny because they don’t get why it bothers people. They’ll insist that the only reason what you’re doing is wrong would be if you were “reinforcing a lie” or some other bull shit.
The thing is, they don’t. Because no one ever put Elliot in the position of literally being told by everyone around her that she was a man, no one ever told her she was delusional and should find a counsellor to investigate whatever trauma might have caused her to have these incorrect beliefs about herself that let her think she’s a woman when she’s clearly not.
The people complaining don’t understand because they think it’s at worst as bad as JD saying Elliot has an Adam’s apple, and they don’t or won’t confront the fact that that’snot what they’re doing to trans people. And yeah, those jokes were stupid and transphobic and unnecessary, but even then the whole joke is that it’s funny she gets upset about it because no one could ever seriously confuse her gender. People can always tell. Right?
They don’t understand, and they refuse to consider ideas that would let them, and that’s pretty fucking shitty. But honestly? If I could just chalk it up to malice, life would be a lot easier.
That makes sense, but a lot of the same points apply. No one thought J.D. was a girl or told him he was delusional for believing he wasn’t. I do get that it was obviously meant to be demeaning there, but almost certainly not for a “you aren’t who you think you are” way, but rather “girls are silly and you’re silly so you’re a girl” way. Casual misogyny: not really better than casual transphobia, but still a separate thing.
The distress JD feels when belittled thusly isn’t because someone really believes he is wrong and bad for thinking he’s a man, but because Cox doesn’t respect him as a doctor and has the erroneous belief that calling him a woman’s name conveys that somehow.
Don’t do this. Misgendering cis people merely makes it seem acceptable to use misgendering as a weapon in general. I understand the inclination to try and make people understand what it is like… But if they have never doubted your gender, they will not understand.
