Growing my instance
Im wondering what ways people advertise/grow their lemmy instances. I recently just created mine and would like to put it out there as one of the options. How did you discover your instance and what drew you to it?
Open source alternatives for gallery app
Hello this is my first post on Lemmy, I have been disgruntled with Xiaomi’s stock gallery app and wish to switch to an alternative that will not steal my data.
File system for 3rd hard drive on Win/Linux PC?
I’m planning on dual booting Windows and Linux on my computer, but each system from a separate hard drive, but what about my 3rd hard drive (which i use mostly for storing games, videos etc…) Should i use ExFAT? I can’t really use NTFS because Linux can’t write to it.
Endeavour OS looking sexy
Almost finished setting up my new OS, it’s gonna be my main (dual booting with Windows on separate disk). Tokyo Night theme for GTK, xfce terminal, btop and vim. Papirus Dark icons.
My ISP sends me letters even if I am torrenting on VPN. Is there anyway to make my traffic not look like torrenting?
Also asked them if torrenting legal stuff is allowed and they said no.
What's the best way to restore your desktop environment after install?
I’ve been dual-booting since the early-oughts, but I’m only just now preparing to delete my Windows partition for good....
why am I seeing 2 year old downvoted posts on all? And communist posts?
Does this have to do with the attack
What data about me could Lemmy hackers steal?
Theoretically speaking of course ;)...
3rd party apps having issues since the attack?
Since some instances were compromised earlier I’ve been able to access the desktop and mobile sites (just had to log in again) but can’t get third party apps to work. Jerboa seems confused whether I’m logged in or not, some pages work and others give a ‘not logged in’ error - I don’t see any option to log out or...
When a Flight Data Recorder/Cockpit Voice Recorder is found, they are often taken on a plane and flown to an investigation headquarters. But what if the plane carrying those black boxes crash?
Example: Lemmy Federated Airlines Flight 360 crashes with no survivors. Now the Lemmy Federation Air Crash Investigation Bureau finds the Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit voice recorder, and they take those boxes aboard Lemmy Investigation Bureau Airfleet Flight 180 back to the investigation headquarters for analysis. This...
Recommendations for JBOD?
It’s time to get some storage for the homelab. I could get a Synology, but I’d quite like to build my own using ZFS....
Why do the nose pads on my glasses turn green--as opposed to some other color?
Do I have more in common with the Statue of Liberty than I might have thought? 🤔
Nothing is where you expect in other people's kitchens
As the title suggests, trying to find anything in someone else’s kitchen is almost always a frustrating experience. Everyone seems to have a different idea about where to put things.
Drive (s) wrecked?
I have some drives of various sizes, 1TB, 2TB etc. I am currently working with a 2 TB drive. I place it in a powered external USB-3 drive enclosure. I can see it in lsblk as the correct size (as SDA) , but the disk manager does not see /dev/sda, and fdisk only wants to let me create a 5 GB partition....
With how decent the browser UI is, what benefits are there by accessing Lemmy via an app?
Just curious. I’m hearing that a lot of people are using various apps with Lemmy but I’m having such a good experience with the browser version that I don’t understand the point of adding an additional layer via an app in between my access to the service. I’d love to hear people’s opinions about the pros and/or cons to...
Federation test
I’m testing if people can see my instance. Reply with your instance.
Does nonstop reading from a hard drive reduce its lifespan?
I was thinking of setting up a seedbox. Seeding will mean that the hard drive is being read from virtually non-stop. Is it fair to say that hard drives are designed for this? Or would this reduce the operational life-span of the hard drive?...
Keyboard Options
So, I’m not sure if anyone knows the answer to this, but can Google know what I’m typing or has any triggers if certain words are spelled out or my passwords are being typed out?...

is there an email Fediverse thingy?
I’ve been looking into the Fediverse and it seems like something I want to get more accustomed to. But iw as wondering if there was an email one based on it? I’ve got like Gmail and outlooks. But I also have a rarely used protonmail. So, I was wondering, is Proton good enough. Or is there a Fediverse alternative?
recommended gaming controller
What controller do you recommend for steam gaming? Is the ps5 controller good? I heard the Xbox controller had some latency issues. I’ve been using the ps4 controller and have noticed a slight amount of latency.
Apollo has ceased working
Looks like Apollo is now dead boys and girls. Feels like having a loved one die
