I use Firefox everywhere which means I have ads blocking everywhere, including and especially on Android. All my tabs are synced and are easily transferred between devices.

tvbusy ,

It depends I think. I found Chrome to be a tiny bit faster but then ads bogged the page down so most of the time, Firefox is faster for me.

In some very rare cases when I need to disable ads blocking, Chrome is indeed faster but I’d rather abandon websites rather than disable ads blocking.

So if you love ads, Chrome is better. If you hate ads like I do, Firefox is miles ahead.

I would suggest:

  • 1KB = storage capacity of 1 kg of 1.44 floppy disks.
  • 1MB = storage capacity of 0.0106 mile of CD drives.
  • 1GB = storage capacity of 1 good computer in the 2000s.
  • 1TB = storage capacity of 1 truck of GB (see above)

PS: just to be clear, I meant CD drives, not CD discs.

tvbusy , (edited )

Thank you for your compliment. I love it. The floppy disk is 1.44 non-freedom MB, not 0.015264 miles of CD drives.

Reddit is licensing its content to Google to help train its AI models (www.engadget.com)

Google has struck a deal with Reddit that will allow the search engine maker to train its AI models on Reddit’s vast catalog of user-generated content, the two companies announced. Under the arrangement, Google will get access to Reddit’s Data API, which will help the company “better understand” content from the site....

tvbusy ,

Spez: we want to sell our users’ content to anyone with a good price.

Staff: but our users will rage and delete their content.

Spez: not if we remove the API.

RoR is too much magic for me. Getting started with any new code base is such a pain that I never want to do again. As a manager, I’ll avoid any job post that mentions Ruby. I have maintained projects written in Delphi, Centura, Java, C#, PHP and none of them even come close to the pain of RoR. Java and C# are notorious for ceremonial interfaces but that’s nothing compared to trying to figure out RoR automagics.

I regret looking up the clip: youtu.be/jNFOVkB6JjQ

Sorry to say to my UK friends, it looks like these people have no manners when it comes to debating. Asking a question and then proceeded to shout over them. I’m surprised they still have viewers.

Epic wanted exclusives by pulling games from other platforms. I will never spend a single cent on Epic Games. I’m happy to spend it on Steam, especially games that I have pirated before (Commandos series for example) or indie games (Banished anyone?).

For bigger games such as Civilians, I’ll purchase it on Steam and then pirate so I don’t need to run Steam. I am a big fan of patches to remove the intro screen.

tvbusy ,

I pirate because it’s more convenient. No launcher, no update, no DRM, no need to be always online. I still purchase games but still play the pirated version.

It is compulsory for all Israelis to do military service. In a way, some civilians in the concert are also soldiers. I have no idea how I would look at it but let’s not exclude the military service.

Ultrasound can push vaccines into the body without needles (www.newscientist.com)

Vaccines can be delivered through the skin using ultrasound. This method doesn’t damage the skin and eliminates the need for painful needles. To create a needle-free vaccine, Darcy Dunn-Lawless at the University of Oxford and his colleagues mixed vaccine molecules with tiny, cup-shaped proteins. They then applied liquid...

Simplest solution for fragmented communities: Redirect comments to one post (by asking or with new functionality)

EDIT: Thank you for all the great responses! I agree that a forced implementation is no longer the way to go. I’ve left the post as is, aside from this comment, in case anyone wanted to reference part of it. At this point, I think implementation 1 (Sincere Request) is the way to go if anything....

tvbusy ,

I feel the same too.

I think the merging can be part of the federation process as well. Since I’m going to receive posts from the same server, it can combine these posts and give me back the combined view. There will be some kind of repost ID/link so that the server knows how to combine them.

Agree. I don’t understand why Amazon thinks this will help, like “hello people, Union is a thing that we’re really afraid of, haven’t you heard?”

Like someone on lemmy once said: tools like this will make the climate situation worse since people can eat what they want and not have to worry about gaining weight. The drug is certainly going to help a specific group of patients but it’s very likely that it’ll be abused.

tvbusy ,

Same here. I still prefer single narrator. There are a few cases when there are just too many characters but it’s still much easier to listen to than multiple narrators.

I have also noticed sound effects in audiobooks. I like it at the end/start of a chapter, but it need to be subtle. I listened to Fractal Noise, which has audio effect for the thumbing sound, very quiet at the beginning but turned very loud at the end of the book. While it’s new and interesting at the beginning, I quickly grew tired of it. I’d rather only the narrator reading the book than hearing the sound effect.

I think it’s a matter of imagination. Reading/listening for me is not only about the story but also about my imagination. The sound effects removes this, sadly, despite the huge effort by the team.

Try Paint.net. Layers, transparency, filters and even plugins. It’s free to download from their website. Install from Windows Store does have cost as a way to donate.

The fact that it’s impossible to change game on an ongoing/completed game is exactly the reason why everyone is angry. This is distortion, simple, just like the example of car being charged for miles mentioned in the article. It’s no coincidence that games are advertised as “built on …” since game engine decides how the game is built.

If only smart glass is as popular as mobile phones. When Google introduced their smart glass, I dreamt of a day when a price history overlay is displayed when looking at a barcode, like how Keepa is doing for Amazon.

I also like German price display which has effective price, as in Eur per liter for drinks, making it dead simple to compare products. A smart glass will make it available everywhere.

Back to Carrefour, I really like that they are pushing pro consumer actions. However, we all know too well that they won’t do the same when it’s their products which are shrinking. Still better than no action though.

tvbusy ,

I think a price most recently changed date next to price per unit would be great.

RoR is very… specific. Some love it because it comes with magic. Many hate it for the same reason.

You either knows the magic and love it, or you hate it with a passion. You never really know when (not if) your change will break the system because it’s supposed to name in a very specific way that work by, again, magic.

Making education so expensive that the only way for some to pursue education is to die for their country is a crime. If majority of your citizen view being part of army is only for poor people, your country does not deserve to be protected because obviously not enough people willing to fight for it. Turning your citizens into slaves and sending them into the meat grinder makes you a monster.

Encrypt then sign. Verification is often much faster than (or at worst as fast as) decryption. Signature can also be verified without decryption key, making it possible to verify the data along the way.

tvbusy ,

Any good encryption should make data looks random. Looking for patterns in encrypted data is one of the most basic steps to break an encryption. Therefore, good encryption should make data almost uncompressable, as in it’s so random that compression does not reduce the size.

After many failed attempts at TDD, I realized/settled on test driven design, which is as simple as making sure what you’re writing can be tested. I don’t see writing the test first as a must, only good to have, but testable code is definitely a must.

This approach is so much easier and useful in real situations, which is anything more complicated than foo/bar. Most of the time, just asking an engineer how they plan to test it will make all the difference. I don’t have to enforce my preference on anyone. I’m not restricting the team. I’m not creating a knowledge vacuum where only the seniors know how yo code and the juniors feel like they know nothing.

Just think how you plan to test it, anyone can do that.

The Best Free Apps for Spotify Users in 2023

Not sure if they’re different now. I tried YouTube Music one year ago and it’s very hard to find new music. On Spotify, I can navigate from one song to a related song and another and so on. On YouTube Music, it keeps taking me back to artists and songs that I have liked before, making it very hard to find new music.

The West insisted that their weapons are not to be used inside Russia. I don’t think Ukraine would want to risk the supply of weapons for small political gains.

I worked as engineer for 15 years and then management for the last 2 years. The urge to go back to engineering never stop. What keeps me in management is seeing how I can create the environment where engineers are able to do their work.

If I go back to being an engineer, I won’t be able to make sure product requirements are clear, priorities are correct, team members will have a chance to practice skills they don’t get to do at work. At the minimum, protecting my engineers from stupid back to office policies that were enforced just because the CEO felt lonely one day. Would someone who has not worked as an engineer understand the feeling of stairing at the screen for 8 hours not able to start anything due to burnout is the worst feeling ever? Will they hear the grinding wheels when soneone used the wrong term during meetings?

There are just so many things that I can do for MY engineers, exactly what I wanted when I was still an engineer. I don’t trust others to provide that so I take it on myself to do it. Granted, I need support from upper level for this to happen so it’s an important aspect for me when I apply for jobs.

tvbusy ,

This is why maintaining your account there and keep deleting your comments/posts will destroy Reddit. Do it, you have the power.

Excellent. I don’t have any other idea yet but I always think it’s better to maintain an account there in case we want to use it. I plan to use my account to refer people to Lemmy for example.

How have you optimized your Pi-hole?

A few months ago I set up a Pi-hole at home. I tried to create a decent blacklist by first adding some regexes I found online and then doing some manual optimization by finding ads and blocking the ad requester through the queries page. But in the end it did not work so well. I still get a lot of YouTube ads, for example. So I...

tvbusy ,

Let’s say YouTube has a video and 2 ads:

  1. The video is served from videos.example.tld/video.mp4.
  2. The first ads is served from videos.example.tld/ads/ads1.mp4.
  3. The second ads is served from ads.company.tld/ads2.mp4.

PiHole will be able to block only (3) because DNS applies at domain level, as in videos.example.tld. DNS requests only send the domain part and re-use the response for all addresses using that domain.

Browser extension, on the other hand, sees a request to …/ads… and block it since it handled each HTTP/S request and know the full URL.
