No home button is absolutely pathetic. I never stopped using FF on desktop, but until FF mobile gets a home button it’s not going to be installed on my phones.

In the meantime Kiwi has been the better browser on mobile by far in my opinion. It has access to more extensions and it was the first browser to do things like the bottom address bar among other things. Oh, and it has a fucking home button like every other browser except for FF mobile for some dumbass reason.

somedaysoon ,
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

You can’t set it to a custom URL… I have a selfhosted dashboard that I want to load by pressing the home button. Having a “home” button that forces you to use their dumb start page isn’t really a home button. That isn’t how any home buttons on any other browsers work including FF desktop.

@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

You realize that there is difference between FF mobile and FF desktop, right? This has been a known issue for a long time now. I’m not mistaken and I’m not mentioning it because I just glanced over some settings.

somedaysoon ,
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

And you’re annoying… it would have taken you 5 seconds to open FF on your phone if you use it to see that you were wrong instead of trying to incorrectly correct me.

somedaysoon , (edited )
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

I can’t comprehend how you fail to understand that on FF mobile you do not get an option to set a custom URL for the home button. But yes, please open your FF mobile right now and show me how you can set the home button to something like dashboard.home.lan or a local IP address, I can’t wait!

somedaysoon , (edited )
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

Tell you what, you show me how to set a custom URL to the homepage button on Firefox Mobile in the current build and I’ll send you $2000… let me know when you’re ready to admit you’re wrong.

somedaysoon ,
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

Nah, it’s time for you to wake up son. I would rather have software that is customizable instead of the turd that is firefox mobile right now.

somedaysoon , (edited )
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

You can’t set the home button to a custom URL in Firefox mobile… that “home” button forces you to use the Firefox start page. That’s not really a home button. I need the home button to take me to my selfhosted dashboard because that’s where everything I ever want to get to is and it’s something I can control and customize to my liking. I shouldn’t be forced to use Firefox’s shitty start page… that’s a start page button, not a home button despite what they call it.

somedaysoon , (edited )
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, but that’s still an extra step to have to click home and then click on my dashboard shortcut that I don’t want to do. I want to press home and be instantly on my dashboard which I spent a lot of time customizing for myself. I don’t want to see Firefox’s shitty dashboard/start page before I get to mine. Also because I do it all the time, dozens of times a day.

Kiwi works, I realize it’s based on chromium. But it works perfectly and is far more customizable with far more extensions. But if Firefox ever adds a real home button, I’d likely switch to it.

There are also no extensions that allow for this customization of the home button. It’s honestly fucked. I looked and looked for a way around it. There is no way to do it, it’s a known problem.

github.com/mozilla-mobile/fenix/issues/7551

bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1807866

somedaysoon ,
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

That doesn’t work for me, I need a home button in the browser to take me to the dashboard.

My workflow is open browser and I’m on my dashboard and I select something like my selfhosted paperless-ngx and now I want to get back to my dashboard again to go to sonarr. Right now that is one button press on home. Then I’m done with sonarr and I want to open my to do list, again just press home button. Every other method is more than one button press and less efficient. I shouldn’t have to be less efficient because Firefox doesn’t have a basic feature that every other browser has had since the beginning of time.

This has been a known problem with Firefox for 5+ years. And what’s worse is that at one point in the past, Firefox mobile did have the ability to add a custom URL to the homepage but at some point they broke it. Which is why I stopped using it. And they have very little care to fix it. Just look at the comments in the github issue, plenty of people care about it.

somedaysoon ,
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

For real… I got downvoted into oblivion for a valid criticism.

And listen, I’m a huge FOSS nerd… I only use linux on my computers. I selfhost a shitload of FOSS services to maintain control and privacy. I run LineageOS on my phones and 90% of my apps are from f-droid. I say all that because obviously I would love to use Firefox mobile instead of another chromium based browser, but it’s a turd… it doesn’t have a functioning home button for fucks sake, it’s been a known issue for over 5 years, and they haven’t fixed it.

And why is something so seemingly simple not been fixed? Is it spaghetti code? Is it on purpose to force you to use their start page? I don’t know, but I know there is no way around it. There are no extensions that fix it and none of the forks have added the functionality… despite plenty of people wanting it.

No problems on desktop with Firefox and uBlock Origins and no problem on my TVs with SmartTubeNext and no problems on mobile with Revanced so far. I have yet to encounter any ad blocking messaging or ads themselves.

somedaysoon ,
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

It isn’t better right now… there is a subscription rate limit and a few other issues. Revanced is far more polished and reliable right now. Grayjay might mature into a better app in the future, but it is far from better right now. I’m subscribed to Rossman, so I tried it when he announced it on the channel… gave it a fair shake, but then uninstalled it. I’ll check in on it every few months, but for YouTube specifically Revanced > grayjay.

I want to present my files - wherever they may be - to all sorts of different applications which let me interact with them in different ways.

Only some self-hosted software grants us this portability.

I’d say almost everything is already covered with Samba shares and docker bind mounts. With Samba shares the data is presented across network to my Kodi clients, the file browser on my phone, and the file browsers of all my computers. And with docker bind mounts those files are presented to any services that I want to run.

Are phone notification LEDs still a thing?

Looking at all the features that older phones uses to have compared to newer ones, I never hear anyone talk about the removal of the notification LED. I personally really liked that feature, being able to see if I got an email, a text or missed a call without turning on my phone was awesome. My Samsung note 8 had this feature,...

somedaysoon ,
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

That’s not true, it didn’t work that way. You could set it for individual notifications and even have custom colors. I would have it orange for K9 emails and green for text messages and red for a missed call… it was extremely versatile and much better than screen always on which I always disable on my phones because it looks bad and is a distraction in my opinion and it uses more battery.

You’re thinking little picture, your data specifically isn’t worth anything. Do you really think these multi-billion dollar companies are investing these crazy resources into data to see your porn history or sell you a different brand of toothpaste?

Your data with everyone else’s data is worth a lot because they can use it to manipulate and control society. The Cambridge Anyltica scandal was a proof of concept… and you are not impervious to it. Some of us don’t want to participate in fueling that machine, but congrats on bringing yourself to not care about it I guess.

somedaysoon ,
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

I think we will eventually see tooling for data-poisoning, and it will become a valid counter-measure for maintaining privacy.

somedaysoon , (edited )
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

Strawman. Where did I claim advertising wasn’t previously manipulative? I never made those claims. I’m concerned with the scale and effectiveness provided by these data pools. Don’t equate misleading marketing campaigns with the level of scale and effectiveness this offers. Again, see the Cambridge Analytica scandal for reference. It’s been proven that they can control a large demographic to sway an election. The means and effectiveness have never before been seen, and were made entirely possible by data collection. That’s the reason the data is so valuable, and that’s the reason so many resources are being poured into it. Eventually they will be able to use it to set opinion and control the majority of society.

Why anyone bothers with Pi Foundation boards any longer is beyond me, there are so many better SBCs. The rockpro64 launched a full year before the Rpi4, back in 2018, and had PCIe, SATA cards, NICs, and a sweet NAS case to go with it. It could boot from USB drives right away, unlike the Rpi4, it didn’t have power supply issues unlike the Rpi4, and it had eMMC support unlike the Rpi4, among many other benefits like a faster CPU, again having launched a full year prior.

somedaysoon , (edited )
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

It isn’t, you can get SFF PCs for as little as $75 on eBay that have Quicksync CPUs and will run circles around a RPi, especially if you have to do any transcoding. They are also really power efficient… 7-20W idles.

www.ebay.com/itm/195163970881

SBCs really should no longer be considered for selfhosting unless you are A) in an extremely power constrained environment like an off-grid RV or vanlife situation or B) clustering

somedaysoon , (edited )
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

Remember when they said the Pi3 had 1Gbps speeds. That’s when they started to lose me. Pine64 has had a far better competing board going back to the Rpi3, and they don’t use scummy marketing practices like the Pi Foundation.

Self-hosted app to view sever health?

Heya, so I have now recently set up a bunch of different services on my debian server. Wondering if anyone has any suggestion to any applications I can host to view disk usage - cpu/gpu performance, fans, etc etc… basically a nice and clean UI over the hardware. Already working on setting up a homepage for viewing the health...

somedaysoon , (edited )
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

Some dashboards can do this, check out homepage as one example. Glances is a great tool if you want to create your own. Really you should not rely on checking status pages for health but instead set up monitoring and notifications.

I use healthchecks.io and smtp_to_telegram to be instantly notified of SMART failures, storage limits, backup and other script failures, and if docker services go down. As with all selfhosting though, there are plenty of other options for both the monitoring system and the notification system.

Jerboa is also missing what I consider a necessary and basic feature of setting a default comment sort. If you want to see comments sorted by top then you have to make 2 extra clicks in every post you click into, it’s extremely frustrating.

I like Jerboa, and I’ve even donated to them, but it’s unusable in the current state. If you don’t care about changing comment sorting, I guess it’s fine, but I do.

For real, most of the comments are about the scalpers but this is the only thing that stood out to me. The IRS has consistently shown they would rather net the little fish that can’t fight back than take down the whales. Another example of being beyond the law in this country if you have money.

somedaysoon , (edited )
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

Passing the buck in my opinion.

If you want to talk about political parties, each enable each other with their disgusting symbiotic relationship. The Democrats are just as responsible for being ineffectual and allowing the Republicans to enact their policies. They are responsible for losing to Trump in 2016. They are responsible for perpetually playing victim and pandering to voters like you, who are happy to be upset at just one side of the aisle, so they never have to actually be progressive or make any real changes that would upset their donors. It might feel good for you to vote for the lesser evil, but it does nothing; as evidenced by the last two decades. If voting actually changed anything, they would make it illegal.

somedaysoon , (edited )
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t see any evidence that they would target the whales given proper funding. Your argument hinges on that and it has no basis as far as I’ve seen.

Edit: Removed AMP link for the direct link as pointed out to me in a reply below.

somedaysoon , (edited )
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

The first thing I saw after reading the parent comment was a reply refuting it, with a screenshot of the dark mode. I think that’s pretty good

Yeah, but that was also me providing that screenshot… it originally had 20 upvotes and no downvotes and was the top comment by far. No one questioned it before I posted the screenshot and the comment you replied on. I don’t even use Libre Office but immediately thought, “that can not be correct,” then I installed it to take that screenshot, so I think I can be a little frustrated and annoyed over this kind of misinformation. Because if I had just taken that comment and all the upvotes as the truth, then I would be dissuaded to use it in the future, and that would be based on completely wrong information. And that’s bullshit.

Oxford study proves heat pumps triumph over fossil fuels in the cold (www.nationalobserver.com)

Oxford study proves heat pumps triumph over fossil fuels in the cold::Published Monday in the scientific journal Joule, the research found that heat pumps are two to three times more efficient than their oil and gas counterparts, specifically in temperatures ranging from 10 C to -20 C.

somedaysoon , (edited )
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

Right but efficiency doesn’t mean it’s better. Electric heat has always been 100% efficient, but that has not made it the most cost effective nor the best solution over far less efficient means of generating heat either. Efficiency isn’t the only factor. The debates and critisms here are valid from what I’ve seen.

Personally, I’m not sold on them… maybe if I lived someplace warmer but living in Wisconsin, they are not for me. I’ve also seen that they require a lot more maintenence and are much less resilient compared to furnaces and central air units. I’ve watched plenty of installation and repair videos on them. Even the HVAC guys have issues with them in these terms.

somedaysoon ,
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

But keep your eyes on it and don’t write it off. I don’t know how old you are, but it’s still likely to end up the most effective choice for you at some point in your lifetime. Certainly in your children’s.

Oh yeah, for sure, I keep an eye on all these types of things because at the end of the day, I’m a cheap bastard, and love long-term savings. I am going to go with the option with the highest positive expected value for me, but heat pumps are not there for my climate just right now. I’d be more then willing to convert over if that ever changes.

somedaysoon ,

It only makes a difference if the server is capping the speed per connection. If it’s not then it will not make a difference.

somedaysoon ,
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

It’s interesting to me people still download things in that fashion. What are you downloading?

I occasionally download something from a web server, but not enough to care about using a download manager that might make it marginally faster. Most larger files I’m downloading are either TV shows and movies from torrents and usenet, or games on steam. All of which will easily saturate a 1Gbps connection.

somedaysoon , (edited )
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

It’s interesting you’re proving your point by your own post being upvoted right now.

The initial number of 42% isn’t that far off of reality. My own garage/shop is 36% right now. And I will at some point add onto it. Right now it is 25’x32’ and I would like another 20’ on it. Then it would be 25’x52’ and 48%. And I live right in town, on a regular 1/4 acre lot.

There are defintely houses in Wisconsin here that are at 60%. I can go on realtor.com right now and find properties with large pole sheds and garage spaces that account for 60%.

I don’t see any claims of majority, just that it can happen. And it definitely does, unless you don’t consider steel frame buildings and pole sheds, but why wouldn’t you? Here is one example, and another example, and another example, but I could find plenty of others. Just go on realtor.com search Wisconsin and set garage spaces to 3+ and maximum home size to 2250 sq feet and you will see plenty of examples of 60% and even greater.

Another one. Another one. Okay. I’m done now because I’m starting to get garage envy looking at some of these.

somedaysoon , (edited )
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

You do not, in fact, count those buildings towards your houses square footage. Doing so would open yourself up to all sorts of liability.

You don’t count garage spaces as square footage of a house either, so what is your point? If he’s comparing garage space footage to living quarter footage, then you should also include pole sheds into that equation. Fucking think about it… use the context of this conversation, and attempt to apply a little critical thinking.

All that aside, you’re slapping a 25’x52’ shed onto your 1/4 acre property? That’s almost 20% of your land use not including lot encroachment setback, drainage, and basic driveway/building infrastructure. It’s your property so definitely do as you wish, but to think this is a common practice or a desirable thing outside of niche hobbyists or being used for work related activities/storage is nonsense.

No, not adding a shed, extending my garage/shop. It has steel siding, nice windows, fully insulated 6 inch walls finished with osb on the inside, ceiling with tons of lighting, a ceiling mounted hot dawg furnace that takes it from 20F to 60F in literally 10 minutes, and perfect concrete with a drain.

Neighborhood flooding, no natural green spaces for habitats, it all sounds like a horrible dystopia on your mini-compound.

A lot of people use their garages for other things than just storing vehicles. Feel free to take a look at my YouTube videos to see how nice my garage/shop is setup now. And how nice my fenced in backyard looks, and how the garage doesn’t take away from it, nor would adding the 20’ onto the back of it. And how nicely this and my house all sit on this property. Then you can stop talking out of your ass, thanks buddy! Again, this OP has really been proving his point in a roundabout way, a lot of people in here like you talking out of their asses and getting upvotes.

somedaysoon ,
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

Fair enough, but that is not discernible from the post. You’re highlighting what they are saying, and all they are saying is, “Sometimes, the garage is more than 60% of the whole house.” And you are implying with this post that it is factually incorrect, when it is in fact true.
