This is it, in my experience. They think all you need to read is the bible and no other books. But if you’re only reading the bible, you miss out on everything in all other books, which is a lot.

Some state lawmakers want school chaplains as part of a 'rescue mission' for public education (apnews.com)

Lawmakers in more than a dozen states have proposed legislation to allow spiritual chaplains in public schools, a move that proponents say will ease a youth mental health crisis, bolster staff retention and offer spiritual care to students who can’t afford or access religious schools....

sodalite ,

what happened to school guidance counselors? they still exist, right?

sodalite ,

This is so sad to hear.

sodalite ,

Damn, even the nurses? Public education is even more of a mess than I thought.

sodalite ,

On the other hand, if you put a transman with the women, he will have a clear advantage and it wouldn’t be fair.

sodalite ,

Agreed honestly, the division of any thing by gender seems out of date these days. Go based on skill, age, or weight/height, something… just leave gender out of it.

sodalite ,

Kind of points out the obvious, but at least it’s scientifically proven now.

sodalite ,

corporate vs. free, then zoom into free and vs. bad instances. we still need something like TheBadSpace to help with safety and moderation.

sodalite ,

not memes for me but anime. there’s no way to block whole instances i don’t wanna see. if i don’t wanna see ani.social on my feed at all i have to block every community on the instance, which is just not possible.

memes though is gonna be hard for you because a lot of people use meme formats to communicate in any topic. the science side of lemmy memes about science stuff. the programmers meme about computer stuff. but that’s not all they do, there’s more than just memes, there’s actual discussion too. to completely get rid of memes and never see them on a lemmy feed again is gonna be an impossible task.

omg you the real mvp

Mystery/ crime/ horror novel recommendations?

ETA: I have read and downloaded many of your recommendations and have had lots of fun reading them! You are such a welcoming enthusiastic bunch. Thanks a lot! Still looking for more suggestions in case someone wants to add to the ever growing list. So far this year I have read twenty seven books....

How to save culture from the algorithms, with Filterworld author Kyle Chayka (www.theverge.com)

Seven years later, Kyle’s argument is that AirSpace has turned into what he now calls Filterworld, a phrase he uses to describe how algorithmic recommendations have become one of the most dominating forces in culture, and as a result, have pushed society to converge on a kind of soulless sameness in its tastes.

sodalite ,

While I appreciate this article and those like it, too many of these types of articles don’t focus enough on the solution. I expected an article titled “how to save” to offer more solutions to what can be done, but that’s mostly left to a single paragraph about being more intentional and thoughtful and “sitting with your own feelings.”

If something isn’t done to actually change the consumerist culture and insidious marketing models and data collection practices, we’ll have another article like this in another few years, like we have had every few years. We were talking about filter bubbles when I was in high school over ten years ago. It’s only gotten worse.

sodalite ,

Yeah that’s very true about RSS readers and FOSS options and the masses not being able to find them very well despite wanting it. Agreed it’s a good quotable conversation to have published. I am just frustrated that we so seldom see talk about what we can do about it, what comes next?

sodalite ,

once the boomers get there and start liking it, that’s when you know it’s about to reach peak and crash hard. my parents are talking about reddit. case in point.

sodalite ,

lol you right

sodalite ,

i still judge people who film in portrait tbh. I can’t stand vertical videos, it’s the main reason i never made a tiktok.

sodalite OP ,

It looks like Tumblr at least has a way to opt-out of sharing with third-party services that use AI, but since this has been there it’s unclear if it’ll change with this new announcement. https://slrpnk.net/pictrs/image/e0b47499-b2c3-4d86-ab6b-7603cf26be84.webp

sodalite OP ,

What are some beginner-friendly, free Wordpress alternatives?

sodalite OP ,

If it doesn’t apply to the .org side, that would be great. But even I’m not sure I’d want to stick with them as a company.

sodalite OP ,

Plume looks perfect, thanks so much.

Why are all the instances defederated from each other?

@fediverse

Has there been drama over there or something?

sodalite ,

I am also wondering this

sodalite ,

Listen to independent radio stations. Usually can find a stream link online and plug into a music player app.

sodalite ,

Damn, it’s just like that show, The 100

Are things broken? I know Lemmy 0.19 has some federation problems but it seems like more than that is broken for about the last week.

It seems like just recently, everything broke. Posts from some other instances (Lemmy 0.19 or kbin) aren’t showing up here reliably anymore, and then sometimes posts from a few days ago will suddenly show up. kbin.social has a banner talking about unusual “problems” without going into detail....

sodalite ,

I believe kbin is updating the API, working on bug fixes and improvements and such, so the site is spotty right now. It said this would be happening for a few days, but that was a few days ago…

sodalite ,

There are still a lot of games that don’t work for me, even with Proton on Steam. Lutris has just straight up never worked for anything. Managed to get some going with the Heroic Games launcher, but not all. I think it’s either a DirectX problem or something with the drivers. I’m not nearly techie enough to know how to even approach solving the problem, just maybe identifying it. I hope you figure it out so we can all get to playing our favorite games.

sodalite ,

I love Bottles. When in doubt, that always works.

sodalite ,

all these visitors flying in with their germs and shopping in crowds, yeah you bet im masking up

sodalite ,

At first I thought this was good because this is actually what I want my tax dollars to go toward. But it seems like that is not what the writer of this article is saying…

Disney is about to own all of Hulu | Disney’s paying more than $8 billion for Comcast’s stake in Hulu. (www.theverge.com)

Disney is about to own all of Hulu | Disney’s paying more than $8 billion for Comcast’s stake in Hulu.::Disney and Comcast have reached a deal on Hulu’s buyout. Disney expects to pay about $8.61 billion to get the 33 percent owned by Comcast as a result of their agreement in 2019.

sodalite ,

I’m wondering how this will affect Spotify, because back when I paid for Spotify it came bundled with Hulu.

sodalite ,

because this guy has made so many great decisions in the past, right? lol

Kids on Roblox are hosting protests for Palestine (techcrunch.com)

In the Lego-like world of Roblox, about a hundred blocky avatars march through a lamplit street, wielding Palestine flags that are larger than their own animated bodies. Characters dressed like cartoonish dinosaurs, steampunk zombies and pastel pink pop stars chant together via instant messages in both Malay and English as they...

YouTube adds related videos to the playlist. Have you really never used this site before?

But let’s be real, YouTube is not the source you wanna depend on given its owned by Google. The more you listen on there the more data you give them. It just has everything you need to rip from.

sodalite ,

On that note, here’s some other sites I’ve used to find new stuff:

sodalite ,

damn I just bit the bullet and am manually updating the metadata for my library of 5000 thousand songs, mostly cause I’m old enough that this was the way I did it before Spotify, so now I’m just going back to my old ways… hope you find a solution though, it’d be mighty helpful
