Helldivers 2 is currently occupying my mind 24/7. Yes there are a few bugs here and there, but the game is just so good they don’t really matter in terms of spoiling the experience. It is a 4 person co-op game and its really fun if you find a group of friends you can play with, or a good group of randoms who communicate. However, you can play solo, you just need to change up your playstyle for certain missions, like go a bit stealthier. Honestly try it, and if you want to try the group aspect of it join the official discord where there are lfg channels you can find people to play with.

“Employees speak new languages.” Is what translate gives me, but I would translate it more as “The ones working speak new languages” or “Those who have employment speak new languages”. I still dont get the meme though, so the context might matter more and my translation could be off

Very interesting doc! Its sad how this is the state of things, but something must be done. I hope with the news weve been receiving from Germany recently that this will change long term, and not just for the current government. Hopefully it will snowball and have a ripple effect on other EU countries.

JUST TODAY I was going to buy WinRar. I've used the software forever, for free, and I just thought... I appreciate this, they've never given me grief, and I'm going to pay them.

And I went on their page to subscribe for a lifetime membership, and they wanted 20 bucks, which I was okay with, but it does not include Major Updates! I guess I’ll buy it and just click the do not check for updates button but that seemed kind of, I don’t know....

promitheas ,
@promitheas@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Correct me if im wrong, but I think I read/watched something a few years ago which basically explains why winrar has a free trial but never actually enforces it. It had something to do with copyright law details, and how making it a paid product extends the copyright protections on it so that corporations cant legally use the code for a longer time. Im not sure if I’m even remembering it correctly, because it was several years ago

@promitheas@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

As far as I remember it was so that they couldn’t use it to create their own paid version. I think the dev wanted it to be free, but found this loophole. If I find the video I’ll edit this comment and link it

Edit: i was partially wrong above. Its not for the reason I thought it was, but rather as a business strategy. Individual users keep it relevant so theyre allowed to keep it for free, while businesses have to pay for the license to avoid being sued. Businesses are its main source of revenue. Here is a video explaining it. Its not the video I remember watching, but it seems to be correct.

Can someone demystify computer Ports for me? Please? Blocking, unblocking, opening, allowing, VPNs and their effect, what ports are and what they do, step by step, when you have to interact with them?

It’s the one thing when I’m configuring things that makes me wince because I know it will give me the business, and I know it shouldn’t, but it does, every time. I have no real idea what I’m doing, what it is, how it works, so of course I’m blindly following instructions like a monkey at a typewriter....

To add to your analogy if i may, the firewall is kind of like a security guard or doorman at the building entrance. All mail has to go through him first and if something is addressed to a closed flat (port) he simply doesnt let it get delivered.

Tarallo - selfhostable FOSS Trello alternative (feddit.it)

Hi! For the ones of you that use Trello, I made a simple to use and host alternative in PHP. It’s not a complete alternative like other projects, and I mainly made it to be able to host it on free PHP web servers while having control over data/attachments. It also support a basic importer for Trello JSON exports....

Motorbike Racing Live Streaming - How to find streams?

Hello everyone! Summer is coming soon which means the Isle of Man TT and in addition to that the other major event that interests me is the MotoGP which has already started. I would like to watch these live, but I can’t find any streams for the life of me by the usual methods (search engine, piracy streaming sites)....

How do I hide gyro from a game using steam input?

Trying to play shadow warrior with a dualsense. It’s interpreting the gyro input as the secondary attack trigger (no matter which trigger that is) and in turn the trigger does nothing. In steam input settings the gyro is set to ‘none’ but that doesn’t prevent this behavior. Any way to hide the gyro from the game...

Easiest one that comes to mind is the archlinux.org forums. It pops up constantly in searches, even if youre not searching for an arch specific problem, so I used it even before daily driving arch. Now I have an account on there and have made a few posts seeking help. Most of the time though someone has already asked it, and someone else has already provided a solution.

Region blocked printers (kbin.social)

Piracy adjacent here. We have a printer, colour laserjet, that is from another 'region', was a really nice printer and we bought it just before moving and decided to bring it. I just signed up to oracles free cloud service after watching a video where it was said it was always free, but the wording on oracle’s site made it seem like its a trial. Are there two free options?

promitheas OP ,
@promitheas@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Yup, ended up going with oracle. Free is good for me, and im totally new to this so it doesnt really make a difference to me if theres a minor interface difference between 2 providers.

Thanks

Hetzner or linode closed your account?

promitheas OP ,
@promitheas@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Basically when I was registering it had some wording like “start your free trial now” but once I got into the dashboard there was a message that cleared things up. So I have a free trial of what I assume is a higher tier of their service, which upon running out will revert me back to the Always Free tier.

Currently re-playing Assassin’s Creed 1 and playing Vanilla WoW for the first time on a private server.

Im remembering how much I liked AC1. I know many people say it wasnt that great of a game, but to me its exactly what an Assassin’s Creed game should be - stalk, plan, stealth, assassinate, escape.

WoW is also really fun. I tried getting into retail a few times over the years but there was just too much. It was way too overwhelming. Vanilla seems to be just right for a new player.

promitheas ,
@promitheas@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I dont remember the name of it, but you flew around in a blue spaceshit type thing. I think the story involved you being in some futuristic scifi navy/army. One word I can remember being said a lot (i think your wingman or something said it sometimes when you got a kill) is “Casbah”.

Its not a lot but I was very very young, and played it on my uncle’s PC over a summer while I was visiting my relatives abroad. If anyone has even remotely any idea what Im blabbering about please tell me 😂. Ive been occasionally thinking about it for years.

Holy crap thats it! Installing now through lutris. You people are awesome

Edit: its asking for an iso so i guess ill need to get it on steam

promitheas OP ,
@promitheas@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Yea, it ended up not working for wow private, but it should work for retail/cpassic because battle.net worked almost out of the box with bottles. I only needed to change its runner to caffe. After that I could install my other battle.net games (diablo3 and hearthstone) just fine, so I assume wow would work too.

promitheas OP ,
@promitheas@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Heres what I did:

  • Download the client for the server you want to play on. I wanted vanilla wow so I needed the 1.12.1 client. A quick google search will give you several results you can download
  • Unzip the client in the directory you want it to be “installed” in
  • Go through steam and add the wow.exe in the folder you unzipped as a non-steam game, and force compatibility to the latest proton version available.
  • In the folder where your wow.exe is there should be a realmlist.wtf file. Open it, delete its contents and replace it with the link your server gives you. For example I registered on everlook.org so my link points to that.

It should run now. Check OP, i edited with a link to a video of a guy setting it up on his steamdeck. Its what I followed.
