It definitely is. A passkey in a TPM, for example, cannot leave a device. Also, passkeys can have phishing resistance that you cannot obtain with a password and most MFA solutions.

Where passkeys fall short is registering new devices and recovery. I’m not sure what 1Password’s solution is here.

If it were just the principal then this child would never have been arrested. Sadly, a lot of people in this story should be removed from any position of authority, or possibly society altogether.

paholg ,

I agree, with one huge exception. Why the hell are you wasting your lucky coin applying for jobs?

Also, sure, do some trades once to get some starter money. But that’s a waste of your precious 12 hours a month. As is going for walks. You can be on vacation the other 98% of the time; spend every second of your penny time doing as much good as you can.

Cure diseases, solve nuclear fusion, end wars and violence, build infrastructure. There seems to be no limit the way it’s worded. Hell, build the Enterprise from Star Trek (or a better space ship) and spend your non-penny time exploring the galaxy.

Do physical laws even apply? Can you build replicators for everyone? How about a mansion in a tardis for every person on the planet?

For how long do you have to try something to succeed at it? Maybe you can do each of these things in just a couple seconds. If that’s the case, maybe penny time will quickly become non-valuable if you run out of ideas.

Politically-engaged Redditors tend to be more toxic -- even in non-political subreddits (www.psypost.org)

Politically-engaged Redditors tend to be more toxic – even in non-political subreddits::A new study links partisan activity on the Internet to widespread online toxicity, revealing that politically-engaged users exhibit uncivil behavior even in non-political discussions. The findings are based on an analysis of hundreds of...

paholg ,

I’m not so sure. The study discusses specifically people who engage in partisan subreddits, which is not the same as being politically engaged. It also uses an AI to grade toxicity, which surely mischaracterizes many interactions.

For example, I have been in communities of a non-political nature, where political discussions occur. These are often about real issues that affect real people in the community, and yet there are people complaining about political content.

To complain about political content is, at best, a very privileged take, demonstrating that you are in a position where politics do not affect you much. At worst, it is actively hostile behavior with the goal of continuing the status quo and shutting down discourse. I would call most of these kinds of comments “toxic”, and yet the rhetoric is usually fine, so I doubt an AI would agree.

I’m not an aerospace mechanic, but I do have some insight.

The formula in the image is incorrect. It depicts 7/16" - 10 cents = 10 mm, not plus. Notice that 7/16" indicates the gap in the wrench, and the dime makes that gap smaller.

Now that that is out of the way, it seems that a dime is 1.35 mm (I love that American currency is specified in metric). So, 7/16" - 10 cents = 9.7625 mm. So, pretty damn close to 10 mm.

There are multiple kinds of heat pump water heaters.

For the one I have, only the tank is inside. The full heat pump is outside, and water is piped between it and the tank.

paholg ,

Pssh, I’ll divide by zero all day. You just need -infinity=infinity (think a number circle instead of a number line), and you’re good.

It’s 0/0 where the real crimes begin.

paholg ,

Lol, the Android calculator says, “Keep it real”.

paholg ,

I mean, it’s kind of funny, but also not a great user experience. If you’re familiar with complex numbers, then you’re left annoyed that it won’t perform the computation. If you’re not familiar with complex numbers, then you don’t get the joke and it’s not a helpful error message.

Looks like xmlrpc. The website for this spec no longer exists, so I definitely see a motivation to stop using it, lol.

Is that really any different from life insurance, except with more potential to help poor people?

paholg ,

Ooooooh, companies. I initially misread it as CEOs, and the numbers did not seem right. Though that would be a more interesting metric.

paholg ,

I also appreciate that you’re supposed to learn Django 19 years before you learn Python.

Dishwashers do a pre-wash to get most of the big stuff off, then a main wash to finish up. If you use the capsule-things, there’s only soap for the main wash.

If your dishwasher has two compartments, then put detergent in both as one is for the pre-wash and one for the main wash.

If it doesn’t have two compartments, then just put some detergent loose with the dishes for the pre-wash.

You could do what they do in The Expanse. Spin the planet fast enough that you have artificial gravity, and build upside-down housing as you now fall away from the center.

paholg ,

Yeah, probably? I haven’t read the books, but I guess they have explanations of how they strengthen it.

I would assume it’s an optical polarizer. Like on sunglasses or LCD screens.

Who here uses a less popular Linux distribution? What made you choose it?

Hey fellow Linux enthusiasts! I’m curious to know if any of you use a less popular, obscure or exotic Linux distribution. What motivated you to choose that distribution over the more mainstream ones? I’d love to hear about your experiences and any unique features or benefits that drew you to your chosen distribution.

paholg ,

I prefer to come at it from an immediate utility level, and I think a good place to start with that is home-manager.

You can install nix and home-manager on any Linux distribution or MacOs. It lets you, in a single place, specify what packages you want, services you want to run at the user level, and what config files you want in your home directory. For a lot of things, home-manager has built-in config options, but you can also specify arbitrary config files.

Then, you can take this one file to a new computer, and with no other config, have everything set-up the way you like it.

NixOs allows you to do this for your whole system.

It also has a bunch of other benefits, which tie-in to the jargon you bring up. But if you want to check it out, I’d worry about that later.

paholg ,

You should have some understanding of the nix language to use it, but I wouldn’t worry too too much.

I would also start by installing nix and home-manager on top of whatever distro you already use. For some config, you need to specify things in nix, but for things in home-manager, for example, you can usually either use nix or point to a toml or conf or whatever file.

What else lets me easily play games on Linux, on my couch, without touching a keyboard or mouse?

At what point do they start firing the people in charge of the school district?

I guess I’m neutral evil? I call shenanigans.

I have 183; 71 of them aren’t out yet.

There’s also one at the end of act 2, if you have Gale with you.

Can I make an account for someone without knowing their password?

Last I tried, literally the only way to create a user was to enter a password. Without something like an email or link to create an account remotely, it’s a non-starter for me.

Awesome, thanks

Justin Roiland used his ‘Rick and Morty’ fame to pursue young fans, text messages show (www.nbcnews.com)

In the years following the 2013 debut of Adult Swim’s cartoon phenomenon “Rick and Morty,” its star and co-creator Justin Roiland became a titan of the animation and video game industry and a rock star of youth counterculture. His artistic style and caricatures became ubiquitous in cannabis culture, and his career expanded...

That’s kind of the point. Rick is like Walter White in Breaking Bad.

I think modern inverter units are not less efficient when oversized. They are able to run at varying levels rather than cycling.

There are probably guides, but just pick a random TNG episode, probably not from season 1 or 2.

The elves aren’t aliens, humans are.

Not to defend billionaires, but this post sets an incredibly low bar. I imagine that all people, billionaires included, have done something good in their lives.

I don’t know enough to know if nationalizing the police is a good idea, but that’s already an issue. Police can and do just move from one department to another.

At the very least there should be a national license or record that follows them.

paholg ,

Verified is probably a stricter metric than you need/want. Many games aren’t verified just because of font-size issues and the like on the small screen.

paholg ,

I personally don’t think they do, but an argument can certainly be made. Rust proc macros can run arbitrary code at compile time. Build scripts can also do this.

This means, adding a dependency in Cargo.toml is often enough for that dependency to run arbitrary code (as rust-analyzer will likely immediately compile it).

In practice, I don’t think this is much worse than a dependency being able to run arbitrary code at runtime, but some people clearly do.

As fucked as that is, what fucking eviction notice gives 3 days to vacate? That can’t be legal, can it?

Edit: Looking closer, I see that this is in Texas. And evidently 3 days is all they have to give there. Insane.

Your source is a joke. It doesn’t even define the word, it just shit talks liberals.

Atoms lighter than iron take energy to split, and release energy when fusing. For atoms heavier than iron, it’s the opposite.

paholg ,

Time doesn’t pass for light, though.

There’s a large range between being a billionaire and being poor, silly billy.

It’s mentioned various times that they’re paying for grandpa’s stay at the retirement home, so I imagine that’s the sixth.
