I thought birds have a little bit of iron enrichment above their beaks, wich tells them the direction?

Racism is a Problem when certain groups do not get the same chances or their safety is in danger. In this case no one is at a disadvantage through their work, quite the contrary

I am in a very similar position. Ableton and some other, smaller stuff is the only program that keeps me from switching to Linux fulltime. Bitwig did not click for me yet, I have to give it a try again soon. But the problem of unopenable projects persist. There are roumors, that the push 3 standalone runs a Linux port of ableton. So maaaybe there will be a Linux version in the future? That would be wild! Until then I just dualboot. I will soon reinstall my windows partition for ableton only… I am pretty shure if bigger companies would start supporting Linux, it would take off like crazy

What's a good NAS and server system under CAD$900 (USD$658)?

I am currently using an old laptop (circa 2015) with a 250GB SSD in it, and 4GB of RAM. It runs Fedora 39 Server, and only hosts a Jellyfin instance through Docker right now (though I want to use Nextcloud later too). There is only 15GB of storage left on it, and the CPU is constantly overloaded (due to forced transcoding). I...

What would you use to RAID the drives? Die you try zfs for a USB das?

WbrJr ,

I feel what you mean. But if you are willing to change, i woukd suggest to exchange meat with other protein sources when ever possible. I can highly recommend saitan!

WbrJr ,

I agree with most of it. But Linux can just be a pain, and is not always obvious. Specially if you have no real knowledge of Linux and just wat to use it like Macos or windows. I would say it just is not a drop in replacement. Just starting out and choosing a distro can be overwhelming

WbrJr ,

Just annoying things like missing video codecs in fedora. Why the heck do I have to install something just to watch a video online?! Or the fingerprint reader in Ubuntu only works for the one session, after that it forgets all my prints again. Or using proton and missing dx11 drivers in pop os, I know they are crappy Microsoft software, but are required for some games. Or that Ableton, fusion360, affinity are not available for Linux. I know it’s not Linux fault, we need big companies to invest in Linux in order for it to gain more traction. Or all the package managers. Which should I use? Snap comes with Ubuntu but people say it’s bad and flat pack is better. Or that there is no sound output selection or mixer in the gnome top bar, I need to install an gnome addon for that. There are just little things compared to Mac or windows that Linux is missing or has difficulty with. Don’t get me wrong, I use Linux full time on my laptop now and try to move to Linux on my desktop as well. Those are just things that tech savvy people would struggle with, and I can’t blame them form calling Linux difficult then

WbrJr ,

Uugh I’m so sick of proprietory licenses and software… all this licensing shit… I’m just fed up

WbrJr ,

I use Ubuntu at the moment. Where are the differences?

WbrJr ,

Is this a meme I am too European to understand?

WbrJr ,

I actually thought Qualcomm was quite cool, but that’s an ass deal. On the other hand, it’s Microsoft and I kind of hate them at this point

WbrJr ,

That kind of means that Qualcomm will open source some of their stuff, so the kernel can communicated with the CPU?

WbrJr ,

Why is that? Are they so difficult as a company?

WbrJr ,

Why is that? Are they so difficult as a company?

WbrJr ,

Doch. Mehr hopping.

WbrJr ,

Fedora KDE Spin also does not have a lot of the mentioned feature. I don’t think it’s about the de but more about the maintainers

WbrJr OP ,

But isnt tailscale not just a wrapper for wire guard that does not require big configuration? So I would still end up an VPN and send all my traffic over my home network?

WbrJr OP ,

Thanks! I took a look at tailscale a while back but was turned off immediately because it requires an account at their site. Would headscale run on my own server at home?

What to include in a backup? (Ubuntu)

Hi! A friend just recommended the backup tool that comes with Ubuntu. I took a look at it and was wondering what you guys include and exclude from the backups. I just installed wire guard VPN and but the config file in the etc/wireguard folder, where it belongs. I would have to include this folder as well if I want to keep my...

What I am always wondering, to set up Linux until everything runs without problem, it takes quite some time for me. I use Linux for about a year regularly, and had to set it up about 4-5 times. And it almost always is a pain and I need to search online for some time until everything works. Is it getting easier the more often it’s done? Or do you create a setup script that runs everything if you reinstall the system?

WbrJr OP ,

I started my journey with fedora, but got annoyed by things like not working videos. Ubuntu works for me pretty well and I had very little issues with it compared to fedora. And that’s what I seek in an os

WbrJr ,

So… that’s why I never tidy up my room. I’m just too smart!

WbrJr ,

I though so too, but got fed up from installing fucking video codecs for YouTube, nebula and other platforms manually. And all the configuration… then I tried Ubuntu and it just worked (untill now, got some weird things, but better than fedora so far)

WbrJr ,

What do you mean? To be honest if there are no working open source video codecs that work and are installed out of the box I am happy to use proprietary ones

WbrJr ,

So time os not linear, but cubic?! That’s why I’m always late. I’m just in a different time place

Ubuntu renames files while exporting from google drive connected to "files"?

Ubuntu just started renaming files while exporting (sending over mail, KDE Connect, Whatsapp web). The folder is my google drive, connected to my google drive. Sometimes it looses its file ending/type as well. The file is called something like: “1Kfhgsji2rjfIS-fi3oo598nf8ajlfoi.pdf”...

WbrJr OP ,

The exported one. The original was normal text

WbrJr OP ,

I just opened the Google drive folder in the terminal and listed the files. They all have the similar 33 letter name. When I “ls -ld” on the files, it shows -rw-------

WbrJr OP ,

And chmod 777 returns “operation not supported”

WbrJr OP ,

Thanks dor the link. I ran the command with sudo and the fill path to the file, permission still denied. User group and user is me, still only rw permission for the user… It confuses me, that I don’t have executive permission on my own folder. Should I try to disconnect and reconnect to Google drive?

WbrJr OP ,

Yes to both. Ubuntu should be up to date

WbrJr OP ,

Still permission denied :&

WbrJr OP ,

I should have sudo rights. I’m the only user on the pc and I can execute commands as sudo. The sticky bit seems not to be set. According to the quick Google search it is a “t” behind the rwx permissions when doing ls -l

WbrJr OP ,

When I use “su” and login as root, I can not navigate using ls or cd… it says permission denied again… I’m a little confused to be honest

WbrJr OP ,

Thank you so much for all your time and thought! I’m lot super new to Linux, but it’s my main OS for a few months only. I will look into your steps that you listed. Thanks again!

WbrJr OP ,

Haha thanks! I actually have an docker project planned next! I want to make my own little home server with a raspberry and rum nextcloud and some other services in docker containers. I’m a little afraid but also very excited 😁

WbrJr OP ,

Can I check what processes are using a file?

WbrJr ,

I would argue in addition to that, that it is the things you don’t see on tiktok. They censor specific content that is criticising china or portraying them in a bad light. I’m shure there is good content on the platform. But I genuinely do not understand how people can still use tiktok, same as meta platforms (though they don’t censor that much). Do they not know? Or don’t care?

WbrJr ,

I think he is very smart. But also very stupid at the same time

WbrJr ,

Yo. Maybe rethink what you just wrote.

WbrJr OP ,

Thanks! That seems rather easy. Only thing I’m not sure about, I have basically only access to the pi over SSH. I could use a screen and keyboard but would prefer not to. What would happen if I configure the network wrong on the pi and can not connect anymore, even over my home network? Could I change the config by putting the SD card into my laptop and changing a file? Or is it possible to make it redundant, so if it can’t find a DHCP server, it automatically switches to the preconfigured settings you described? :) Thanks a lot

WbrJr ,

So Steam audio ist basically the audio engine, which is now open source?

WbrJr ,

I’m still at university and we had one course on it sec, but those were my only option to ehance my skills in this field. I fiddled around with ctfs a little and tried to learn some stuff with metasploit. But i feel like the learning curve is very steep, also because it’s such a broad field. I’m currently studying electrical engineering and information technology. I have some skills in programming, embedded, some webdev stuff and some SQL.

What would you say is an easie field to get started in? Some friends of mine are at the same point right now, their skills arenmore limited though. Thanks in advance :)

WbrJr ,

Interesting take. I think different though, because it does not mean we are not free, I think it helps in moments we are lost. I often find my self overwhelmed by what I need to do so organising myself or keeping myself organised can be very important to me. I don’t use apps to this extend yet, but plan on doing so after building my Nas. I think it’s also very interesting to keep track of my health and mood in order to learn patterns I should avoid in order to stay mentally stable

WbrJr ,

Unpopular take: A more complex installer that lets me choose what I want to use:

  • what de?
  • what theme of de?
  • what package manager?
  • all the video codecs or minimal?
  • what office programs?
  • graphics card? Nvidia or AMD?
  • developer pack? (Python, java, some other stuff, vscode/codium)
  • graphics suite (Krita, incscape, gimp)
  • KDE connect, syncthing?
  • Firefox or chromium?
  • cloud connections? (OneDrive, Google drive, nextcloud?)

I don’t know what else could be interesting, but I think that would take away the annoying “what distro to I want” and would make Linux more like “I like gnome, everything installed, I’m a developer” or “KDE plasma, graphics and office, the rest inwant to install myself”

Maybe I totally don’t understand what distros are, but isn’t all the same, just some differen configurations?

Raspberry as NAS, multiple HDDs and an enclosure

Edit: thanks everyone for the suggestions. In the end I decided to buy a icy box usb3.1 4xhdd enclosure for around 100€. In the description it says it only works with mac and windows, but my Linux laptop works well with it, I guess the pi will to as well. I will print an enclosure for the power brick and the pi to screw to the...

WbrJr OP ,

I have 2 HDDs with a speed of 180mb/s with a burst of 6gb/s according to the Seagate website. Usb3.0 has a data transfer rate of 5gbit/s

So the usb connection will be the bottle neck, but 1. My network speed is not that fast and 2. 5gbit/s is still plenty I think?
