In Buddhist view: If all misfortune/suffering is deserved due to bad karma of past actions in a prior life, why advocate ahimsa/nonviolence?

A Buddhist was saying to me that anything bad that happens to someone is deserved because they must have had bad karma as a result of having done something bad, either in this life or a previous incarnation. That’s a populist belief marred by just world fallacy.

The end goal of Buddhism is to achieve Nirvana, which means no more Karma and no more continuous rebirth amd suffering whether they’re “deserved” or not. It can be implied that continued rebirths are itself suffering. So the only peaceful path is to stop it somehow.

I’ve stopped being Buddhist a long time by now but I did discuss a lot of it’s philosophy with some studied Buddhists and monks.

Also a lot of populist Buddhists are actually scared of Nirvana. They just want to be reborn into a nicer life than they have now.

Bodhisattva is one of the first beliefs where Mahayana (East Asian) and Hinayana/Theravada (South/South East Asian) sects differed.

While precursors to Mahayana tradition held belief that anybody can achieve Buddhahood by becoming Bodhisattva, the conservative Theravada sects claim layman can only achieve the status of Arahat at most.

Been daily driving sway for over 5 years now. There were a few problems along the way. I used to have JWM and then XFCE as a back up in case wayland fails. I really only need to go into them when there’s a need for screen sharing. But then, I mostly live in terminal and browser. Low graphic games I play seems okay. The most demanding one I played is probably Starcraft 2 and it plays well even on my crappy 7 years old laptop with intel graphics.

In one episode of last week tonight, John Oliver was roasting Boris Johnson for mumbling the poem ‘Road to Mandalay’ while visiting Myanmar. Calling the act, absolutely offensive or something. Now, not a whole lot of Myanmar people here don’t know the poem. And among those who know, the poem is either fairly well regarded or they hold no such feelings like taking offense. Atleast among the people I know. Boris Johnson’s an absolute clown, but you can definitely sense the bias there.

In Theravada Buddhism, it call other religious views as just Micchaditthi (Pali word), originally meaning just “wrong view”. But in recent years, atleast in my country the word is slowly becoming akin to stronger words like blasphemer, infidel, etc, which is quite sad because in the scripture, it seems obvious that the word wasn’t use in such meaning.

They seem to have this sense that irreligious/non-spiritual people are “missing something”. That " missing something" sense could range from them having some kind of weird pity for us to thinking of us as no different from talking animals. It’s like they think we’re missing something that should be a apart of humanity. They don’t think that we’ve actually overcome that part of humanity. I said irreligious because I’m from a Buddhist country.

Yeah, you learned the tiny bits and pieces of a desktop that you took for granted before. Like trays, notifications, locking, screen saver, etc. Just for the learning experience, any daily driving linux users should at least try to setup a fairly functional desktop environment using bare WMs as the base.

I mostly drink Shan tea which has added toasted sticky rice flavour and a very strong black tea with milk and sugar, the way indians introduced back in colonial time.

Shan tea is simple. Just put it in a flask with hot water, wait a bit and drink slowly.

Black tea with milk has to be brewed hard though. Tannins are part of the flavour. I personally brew for about 15 to 30 mins. Actual tea stalls brew much longer, like hours long. Also tea leaves to water ratio is quite low as well. The tea needs to be fairly tart. Then we add evaporated milk and sweetener. A serving should be quite small because the tea is strong. May be around 100-150ml.

It does pretty much nothing in terms of fancy windowing and layout features. No tab interface, split screens, etc. I let those handled by my TWM and it just starts really fast.

Playing any musical instrument. The feeling of your practice grindings pay off, no matter how still mundane it is to compared to social media professional musicians, is a pretty good feeling.

My real worry with Google's voyage into enshittification (thanks to Cory Doctorow @pluralistic the term) is YouTube.

Through YT, for the past 15 years, the world has basically entrusted Google to be the custodian of pretty much our entire global video archive.

There's countless hours of archived footage — news reports, political speeches, historical events, documentaries, indie films, academic lectures, conference presentations, rare recordings, concert footage, obscure music — where the best or only copy is now held by Google through YouTube.

So what happens if maintaining that archival footage becomes unprofitable?

Holy hell, a lot of what you just described hit right home with me.

I started off as one of the cheap developers (“technical consultant”) for one of those Microsoft business products. Almost every single one of our customers are already ingrained into Microsoft ecosystems and setting up the system we customize and sell is mostly a matter of integrating into their existing AD, Exchange Mail Server and sometimes their private cloud. I was pretty ignorant of open source tools that would tremendously help even if you’re mostly using Microsoft. Ignorant might not be the right word. It would be more correct to say “afraid to peek out of the comfortable Microsoft bubble”. It wasn’t just me, a lot of propriety consultants don’t really bother with anything else. If something’s beyond our capabilities we can always get the support of Microsoft, supposedly. This chain of responsibility give end customers assurance somehow. Like you said, assurance on who to blame and sue at least.

Took me a while to break out of Microsoft bubble and now I do open source ERP. I do get by okay, but I think it’s mostly because my country cannot afford Microsoft license fees.

There used to be a post socialist era mindset that people from my country used to have back in the 90s. It’s simply that if you have to advertise for your product, it’s probably bad. There is Ngatetpya the great cat burglar of Myanmar. He was an actual person from 15th century or something but the later myth describe him as having as having super natural powers granted by enchanted tattoos on his legs. Like neighbouring country of Thailand, the tradition of enchanted tattoos were quite big in ancient Myanmar. You were not considered a man until you have thighs full of tattoos. Anyway, he could jump really high by slapping on his thighs, steal from rich people using his jumping powers and gave back to the poor. When he was finally caught, the king asked him to choose the weapon with which he was to be executed. The burglar blatantly said that he chose the queen consort. The gall of this guy impressed the king so much that he let him serve in his army. History described him as a successful scout/assasin in the king’s army.
