Lemmy helping Lemmy World - Youtube without Ads

I use Firefox and the uBlock Origin addon as my default browser setup. It works great…except for on youtube. I used to use it happily for youtube with all Ads blocked, but two recent youtube changes made me have to use a different browser and extension, just for youtube....

I ended up playing my physical copies way less than digital ones because I can’t be arsed to juggle disks and cartridges.

I sold most of my physical collection when upgrading from PS4 to XSX and bought those games digital there since Microsoft has proven to be solid when it comes to backwards compatibility.

All of my portable consoles (Switch, Vita, DSi, N3DS, Analogue Pocket) are jailbroken and digital only because memory is so cheap that I can hold all noteworthy games on a single SD card. In time current systems will end up in a similar state so there’s little point getting attached to dust collecting boxes.

Machine learning might be the biggest computation type by volume to benefit from this so it’s not that silly. With declining hardware gains we’re back to optimizing in software which is preferable to gobbling up more and more energy resources.

Some were licking the boot because reddit promised ways to monetize subs during a Mod Summit ~2 years ago (business model would be taking a cut of all transactions happening on their platform). I quit modding shortly after and then reddit entirely so I’m not sure if they ever implemented this. Even if they didn’t, mods will remember that promise.

Because AI and Crypto use so much electricity, what if a law was made that they had to power it with green energy?

Something on the lines of if your company facility is using over X amount of energy the majority of that has to be from a green source such as solar power. What would happen and is this feasible or am I totally thinking about this wrong...

I don’t think the Lemmy is well prepared to handle bots or more sophisticated spam, for now we’re just too small to target. I usually browse by new and see spam staying up for hours even in the biggest communities.

Whatever is done to fight spam should be useful in fighting CSAM too. Latest “AI” boom could prove lucky for non-commercial social networks as content recognition is something that can leverage machine learning. Obviously it’s a significant cost so pitching in will have to be more common in covering running costs.

People seem to be selectively stretching definition of social media but are rather inconsistent in applying this label. Yeah, plenty of platforms and websites can be described as social media but we generally go with calling them by primary function. YouTube and TikTok are video platforms first. Reasons why Twitter and TikTok are going downhill are vastly different, reasons for their resilience or lack thereof will be very different too.

Kbin support in Lunar is very rudimentary and read only. The app itself hasn’t been updated in 2 months so I wouldn’t get my hopes up.

IIRC it depends heavily on which phase of sleep you’re in when you wake up. If you interrupt actual dream / REM phase you’re more likely to remember it.

Is it possible to get a virtual credit card for a different country?

I wanted to get my mom YouTube Premium for her birthday but don’t want to pay the ridiculous annual price for my country (especially since she mostly just watches YouTube shorts). She uses an iPhone so trying to get adblocker would be too much of a hassle, especially if it stops working. She won’t be able to figure out how...

Correct me if this changed but you can pay for premium in India with a regular card, you just have to provide fake billing address. I’ve been doing this for years now so maybe I’m grandfathered into some old payment scheme but I’m fairly sure my gf did this recently too when she had to switch from Argentina.

Apple revenue in 2023 was ~$380b and their cash reserves were ~$160b. They can take a couple of worst case scenario fines technically, especially given that they’d be challenged in courts for years. Just makes you realize how important that 30% cut is for them.
